Passage Five
Most famous people have some unusual story associated with their names. Casanova, for example, was a legend in his own time. He was the epitome of the gallant adventurer and lover. However, he spent thirteen years of his life as a librarian!
Thomas Edison, the brilliant inventor, was deaf from the age of twelve. The young Edison's hearing loss was long believed to have been caused when he tried to catch a moving train and a conductor grabbed him by the ears to pull him on board. Edison himself liked to tell this story. No one is really sure how he did lose his hearing.
Great writers and artists often require various types of inspirational warm-up before they create. Rudyard Kipling could not write unless his pen was filled with black ink, and only black ink. Ludwig van Beethoven poured icy cold water over his head before he composed his music. He felt that the cold water would refresh his brain. The author Charles Dickens always faced north when working or sleeping. Tycho Brahe, an important Danish astronomer, had his nose shot off in a duel with a Danish nobleman in 1566. He replaced it with another nose made of gold. President James Garfield could simultaneously write Latin with one hand and Greek with the other.

This important change in women's life pattern has only recently begun to have its full effect on women's economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school at the first chance, and most of them took a full time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen. Many girls stay at school after that age, and though women usually marry younger, more married women stay at least until shortly before their first child is born. Many more afterwards return to fuller part-time job. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life, and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money, and running the house, according to the abilities and interests of each of them.

Passage Five
In order to learn a foreign language well, it is necessary to overcome the fear of making mistakes. If the primary goal (目标) of language use is communication (交际), then mistakes are secondary considerations that may be dealt with gradually. On the other hand, students should not ignore their mistakes. The language learner may observe how native speakers express themselves, and how native expressions differ from the way the learner might say them. For example, a Spanish speaker who has been saying "I do it" to express willingness to do something in the immediate future, could, by communicating with native speakers of English, observe that native speakers actually say "I'll do it". The result can serve as a basis for the student to change his way of using the present tense in English. But a student who is unwilling to communicate in the first place would lose this opportunity to learn by trial and error.
52. According to the passage, the present tense in English is ______.
A. not used to express one's readiness to do something in the immediate future
B. used with some verbs but not with others to express future intention
C. basically the same in English as it is in Spanish
D. not the most difficult problem for foreign students

Passage Five
Hollywood (好莱坞) is a suburb of the city of Los Angeles (洛杉矶) in California. Until 1908 it was no more than a quiet village on the northern side of the city, but in that year William Selig, one of the first people to make films, set up a film-producing workshop (车间) in Los Angeles. By 1911 , David and William Horsely had set up another one in Hollywood, and at about the same time oil was discovered in the neighborhood. Thus Hollywood quickly became a big district given over to the film industry and to oil wells
The early makers of films found Hollywood a good place for their work because of its clear, sunny, rain-free weather, which allowed pictures to be taken all the year round. Also, it was known that every kind of scene needed for films, whether town, country, sea, desert or snow-capped mountains, could be found within the area of California. Today, when most films can be "shot" (拍摄) under cover by man made lighting, these advantages (优点) are not so important.
In spite of a drop in its importance, Hollywood remains a center of film production although now making more films for television than for the cinema.
52. David and William Horsely ______.
A. were the first to set up a film-producing workshop in Hollywood
B. discovered oil in and around Hollywood
C. followed William Selig to Hollywood and settled down there
D. turned Hollywood into a film producing center of the country

Passage Five
In the United States, it is important to be on time, or punctual, for an appointment, a class, etc. However, this may not be true in all countries. An American professor discovered this difference while teaching a class in a Brazilian (巴西的) university. The two-hour class was scheduled' to begin at 10 A. M. and end at 12. On the first day, when the professor arrived on time, no one was in the classroom. Many students came after the scheduled time. Several arrived half an hour later. Few apologized for their lateness. Were these students being rude? He decided to study the students, behavior.
The professor talked to American and Brazilian students about lateness in both an informal and a formal situation: at a lunch with a friend and in a university class. He found that if they had a lunch appointment with a friend, the average American student defined lateness as 19 minutes after the agreed time. However, the average Brazilian student felt the friend was late after 33 minutes.
In an American university, classes not only begin at the scheduled time in the United States, but also end at the scheduled time. In the Brazilian class, only a few students left the class at 12: 00; many remained past 12: 30 to discuss the class and ask more questions. While arriving late may not be very important in Brazil, neither is staying late.
51. The word "punctual' most probably means______.
A. leaving soon after class
B. coming early
C. arriving a few minutes late
D. being on time

Passage Five
A young girl and a man were recently found murdered in a parked car in a Boston suburb. The police found no clue (线索) in the car. Then they found a witness who had seen a car pass by the murdered couple's car. He said it was a 1950 or 1951 Chevrolet (雪佛莱牌汽车).
Ordinarily, searching through the files for owners of elderly Chevies would have been an impossibly difficult task because there were two and a half million such cars. In this case, however, the police had a powerful tool--the computer.
The Boston Registry of Motor Vehicles programmed its computer to screen all 1950 and 1951 Chevrolets within a fifteen-mile radius (半径) of the suburb--the area in which the police believed the murderer was most likely to be found. Within minutes, the computer uncovered one thousand of the wanted cars. A few hours of careful hand screening turned up a 1950 Chevrolet owner who lived close to the scene of the crime and who had received many traffic tickets (交通罚款). He was among the first suspects to be investigated, and evidence linking him to the murdered couple was found. He was arrested, and is now waiting for trial (审判).
51. The computer DIDN'T help the police ______.
A. to find the suspect
B. to find the murdered couple
C. to arrest the suspect
D. to search a 1950 or 1951 Chevrolet

The Security Council has 15 members; five of which hold permanent seats. The Assembly elects the other ten members for two-year terms. The five permanent members - the United States, Britain, France, Russia (formerly the Soviet Union), and China - have the most power. These nations were the winning powers at the end of World War II, and they still represent the bulk of the world’s military might. Decisions of the Council require nine votes. But any one of the permanent members can veto an important decision. This authority is known as the veto right of the great powers. As a result, the Council is effective only when its permanent members can reach a consensus(一致同意).
The Council has a variety of ways it can try to resolve conflicts among countries. Usually the Council’s first step is to encourage the countries to settle their disagreements without violence. The Council can mediate a dispute or recommend guidelines for a settlement. It can send peacekeeping troops into a distressed area. If war breaks out, the Council can call for a ceasefire. It can enforce its decisions by imposing economic sanctions on a country, or through joint military action.
