Like most people, I was brought up to look upon life as a process of getting. It was not u

ntil in my late thirties that I made this important discovery: giving away makes life so much more exciting. You need not worry if you lack money. This is how I experimented with giving away. If an idea for improving the window display of a neighborhood store flashes to me, I step in and make the suggestion to the storekeeper. One discovery I made about giving away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpected form. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a year later I needed a post office box for a new business I was starting. I was told at the window that there were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list. As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard our conversation. " Wasn't it you that wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home? " I said yes. "Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one for you. You don't know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaints.

From the passage, we understand that______.

A.the author did not understand the importance of giving until he was in late thirties

B.the author was like most people who were mostly receivers rather than givers

C.the author received the same education as most people during his childhood

D.the author liked most people as they looked upon life as a process of getting

Is it unusual that salary comes in last on this list? Not really. Salary and benefit do

not usually make it into the top three reasons for job satisfaction on such surveys. Most people know they could make more money elsewhere, but it’s not enough to get them to leave a job they like. Advancement doesn’t rank at the top of the list, either. That’s probably because so many people think that moving up can make life on the job more unpleasant. The only thing one gets in return is more money.

So what creates job satisfaction? One typical answer is “I like to be challenged.” People who say this like to work toward goals. They like new challenging assignments so that they can test their skills and creativity. Another typical answer is “I like to feel I’m making a contribution.” Many people get a sense of community when they are working with a group of co-workers toward a common goal. It is very important for them to have close, friendly relationships with co-workers, and they thrive when others praise their work and appreciate their efforts.

Finally, there are those who say “I get satisfaction from a job well done.” Such people love the technical work they do; they feel proud of the results of their efforts. These people have high standards of quality and work best when they have control over a project. They thrive when others know about the work they have done. Ultimately, the main reason people work is to earn money, but it is not money that gives them satisfaction. Offer employees something more, and you are likely to get more from them.

Who talks more, women or men? The seemingly contradictory evidence is【B1】by the difference
what I call public and private speaking. More men feel comfortable doing public speaking,【B2】more women feel comfortable doing【B3】speaking. Another way of【B4】these differences is by using the【B5】"reporttalk" and "rapport-talk".

For most women, the language of conversations is【B6】a language of rapport: a way of establishing connections and【B7】relationships. Emphasis is【B8】on displaying similarities and【B9】experiences. From childhood, girls criticize peers who try to stand【B10】or appear better than others. People feel their closest connections at home, or in setting where they feel at home—with one or a few people they feel close【B11】and comfortable about—in other words, during private speaking.【B12】even the most public situations can be approached like private speaking.

For most men, talk is primarily a means to【B13】independence and negotiate and【B14】status in a hierarchical social order. This is done by exhibiting knowledge and skill, and by【B15】center stage through verbal performance such as storytelling, joking, or【B16】information. From childhood; men learn to use talking as a way to get and keep【B17】. So they are more【B18】speaking in larger groups made up of people they know less well, in the broadest【B19】"public speaking". But even the most private situations can be approached like public speaking, more like giving a report than【B20】rapport.

【B1】

A.Compromised

B.consolidated

C.reinforced

根据下列短文,回答下列各题。 Like most people, Ive long understood that I will be judged b
y my occupation, that my profession is a gauge people use to see how smart or talented I am. Recently, however, I was disappointed to see that it also decides how Im treated as a person. Last year I left a professional position as a small-town reporter and took a job waiting tables. As someone paid to serve food to people, I had customers say and do things to me I suspect theyd never say or do to their most casual acquaintances. One night a man talking on his cell phone waved me away, then beckoned (示意) me back with his finger a minute later, complaining he was ready to order and asking where Id been. I had waited tables during summers in college and was treated like apeon (勤杂工) by plenty of people. But at 19 years old, I believed I deserved inferior treatment from professional adults. Besides, people responded to me differently after I told them I was in college. Customers would joke that one day Id be sitting at their table, waiting to be served. Once I graduated I took a job at a community newspaper. From my first day, I heard a respectful tone from everyone who called me. I assumed this was the way the professional world worked--cordially. I soon found out differently. I sat several feet away from an advertising sales representative with a similar name. Our calls would often get mixed up and someone asking for Kristen would be transferred to Christie. The mistake was immediately evident. Perhaps it was because money was involved, but people used a tone with Kristen that they never used with me. My job title made people treat me with courtesy. So it was a shock to return to the restaurant industry. Its no secret that theres a lot to put up with when waiting tables, and fortunately, much of it can be easily forgotten when you pocket the tips. The service industry, by definition, exists to cater to others needs. Still, it seemed that many of my customers didnt get the difference between server and servant. Im now applying to graduate school, which means someday Ill return to a profession where people need to be nice to me in order to get what they want. I think Ill take them to dinner first, and see how they treat someone whose only job is to serve them. The author was disappointed to find that _______.

A.ones position is used as a gauge to measure ones intelligence

B.talented people like her should fail to get a respectable job

C.ones occupation affects the way one is treated as a person

D.professionals tend to look down upon manual workers

Public speaking fills most people with dread. Humiliation is the greatest fear; self-expos
ure and failing to appeal to the audience come a close second. Women hate it most, since girls are pressurized from an early age to be concerned with appearances of all kinds.

Most people have plenty of insecurities, and this seems like a situation that will bring them out. If parents, teachers or peers mocked your foibles as a child, you fear a repeat. If you were under pressure to be perfect, you are terrified of failing in the most public of ways.

While extroverts will feel less fear before the ordeal, it does not mean they will necessarily do it better. Some very shy people manage to shine. In fact, personality is not the best predictor of who does it well. Regardless of what you are like in real life, the key seems to be to act yourself.

Actual acting, as in performing the scripted lines of a character other than yourself, does not do the job. While politicians may limit damage by having carefully rehearsed, written screeds to speak from, there is always a hidden awareness among the audience that the words might not be true.

Although, as Earl Spencer proved at his sister Princess Diana's funeral, it is possible both to prepare every word and to act naturally. In script. rarely works and it is used as a crutch by most people. But, being yourself doesn't work either. If you spoke as if you were in your own kitchen, it would be too authentic, too unaware of the need to communicate with an audience.

I remember going to see British psychiatrist RD Laing speak in public. He behaved like a seriously odd person, talking off the top of his head. Although he was talking about madness and he wrote on mental illness, he seemed to be exhibiting rather than explaining it.

The best psychological place from which to speak is an unselfconscious self-consciousness, providing the illusion of being natural. Studies suggest that this state of "flow", as psychologists call it, is very satisfying. Whether in normal life or making speeches, the key is to remind yourself that, contrary to what your teachers or parents may have implied, your best is good enough. In the zone, a strange place of authentic falsehood and shallow depth, play is possible.

For most people the biggest fear for public speaking is ______.

A.looking foolish

B.failing in words

C.not attracting attention

D.appearing pressurized

第11题

Over the last decade, demand for the most common cosmetic surgery procedures, like breast
enlargements and nose jobs, has increased by more than 400 percent. According to Dr. Dai Davies, of the Plastic Surgery Partnership in Hammersmith, the majority of cosmetic surgery patients are not chasing physical perfection. Rather, they are driven to fantastic lengths to improve their appearance by a desire to look normal. "What we all crave is to look normal, and normal is what is prescribed by the advertising media and other external pressures. They give us a perception of what is physically acceptable and we feel we must look like that".

In America, the debate is no longer about whether surgery is normal; rather, it centers on what age people should be before going under the knife. New York surgeon Dr. Gerard Imber recommends "maintenance" work for people in their thirties. "The idea of waiting until one needs a heroic transformation is silly", he says. "By then, you've wasted 20 great years of your life and allowed things to get out of hand". Dr. Imber draws the line at operating on people who are under 18, however, "It seems that someone we don't consider old enough to order a drink shouldn't be considering plastic surgery".

In the UK cosmetic surgery has long been seen as the exclusive domain of the very rich and famous. But the proportionate cost of treatment has fallen substantially, bringing all but the most advanced laser technology within the reach of most people, Dr. Davies, who claims to "cater for the average person", agrees. He says: "I treat a few of the rich and famous and an awful lot of secretaries. Of course, 3, 000 for an operation is a lot of money. But it is also an investment for life which costs about half the price of a good family holiday".

Dr. Davies suspects that the increasing sophistication of the fat injecting and removal techniques that allow patients to be treated with a local anaesthetic in an afternoon has also helped promote the popularity of cosmetic surgery. Yet, as one woman who recently paid £2,500 for liposuction to remove fat from her thighs admitted, the slope to becoming a cosmetic surgery Veteran is a deceptively gentle one. "I had my legs done because they'd been bugging me for years. But going into the clinic was so low key and effective it whetted my appetite. Now I don't think there's any operation that I would rule out having if I could afford it".

According to the text, the reason for cosmetic surgery is to

A.be physically healthy.

B.look more normal.

C.satisfy appetite.

D.be accepted by media.
