第1题

Most people would agree that, although our age exceeds all previous ages in knowledge, the
re has been no corresponding increase in wisdom. But agreement ceases as soon as we attempt to define "wisdom" and consider means of promoting it. There are several factors that contribute to wisdom. Of these I should put first a sense of proportion: the capacity to take account of all the important factors in a problem and to attach to each its due weight.

This has become more difficult than it used to be owing to the extent and complexity of the special knowledge required of various kinds of technicians. Suppose, for example, that you are engaged in research in scientific medicine. The work is difficult and is likely to absorb the whole of your mind. You have no time to consider the effect which your discoveries or inventions may have outside the field of medicine. You succeed (let us say) as

modern medicine has succeeded, in enormously lowering the infant death-rate, not only in Europe and America, but also in Asia and Africa. This has the entirely unintended result of making the food supply inadequate and lowing the standard of life in the parts of the world that have the greatest populations. To take an even more dramatic example, which is in everybody's mind at the present time, you study the makeup of the atom from a disinterested (无利害关系的) desire for knowledge, and by chance place in the hands of a powerful mad man the means of destroying the human race.

Therefore, with every increase of knowledge and skill, wisdom becomes more necessary, for every such increase augments (增强) our capacity for realizing our purposes, and therefore augments our capacity for evil, if our purposes are unwise.

Disagreement arises when people try to decide ______ .

A.how much more wisdom we have now than before

B.what wisdom is and how to develop it

C.if there is a great increase of wisdom in our age

D.whether wisdom can be developed or not

For (71) service, we need a virtual-circuit subnet. Let us see how that works. The idea behind virtual circuits is to avoid having to choose a new (72) for every packet sent. Instead, when a connection is established, a route from the (73)machine to the destination machine is chosen as part of the connection setup and stored in tables inside the (74) That route is used for all traffic flowing over the connection, exactly the same way that the telephone system works. When the connection is released, the virtual circuit is also terminated. With connection-oriented service, each packet carries an (75) telling which virtual circuit it belongs to.

●Let us now see how randomization is done when a collision occurs. After a(71),time is divided into discrete slots whose length is equal to the worst-case round-trip propagation time on the ether(2τ). To accommodate the longest path allowed by Ethernet, the slot time has been set t0 512 bit times, or 51.2μsec.

After the first collision, each station waits either 0 or l (72) times before trying again. If two stations collide and each one picks the same random number, they will collide again. After the second collision, each one picks either 0,1,2,or 3 at random and waits that number of slot times. If a third collision occurs (the probability of this happening is 0.25), then the next time the number of slots to wait is chosen at (73) from the interval 0 to 23-1.

In general, after i collisions,a random number between 0 and 2i-1 is chosen, and that number of slots is skipped. However, after ten collisions have been reached, the randomization (74) is frozen at a maximum of 1023 slots. After 16 collisions, the controller throws in the towel and reports failure back to the computer. Further recoveryis up to (75 )layers.

第10题

Friends play an important part in our lives, and although we may take the fact of frie
ndship for granted, we often don’t clearly understand how we make friends. While we get on well with a number of people, we are usually friends with only a very few---for example, the average among students is about 6 per person. Moreover, a great many relationships come under the general term friendship.”In all cases, two people like one another and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degree of closeness between them and the reasons for their interest in each other vary greatly. At the beginning, much depends on how people meet, and on good first impressions. As we get to know people, we consider things like age, race, looks, economic and social status, and intelligence.Although these factors are not of the greatest importance, it is more difficult to have a good relationship with people when there is a big difference in age and background. We pay attention to actual behavior, facial expression, and the way a person speaks.Friends will stand closer together and soft voices also express friendliness, and it is because they may give the wrong signals that shy people often have difficulty in making friends.A friendly look with the wrong facial expression can turn into an unfriendly stare, and nervousness may be wrongly understood as unfriendliness.People who do not look one in the eye are not trusted when, in fact, they simply do not have confidence. Some relationships are a result of argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have the same ideas and beliefs, the same opinions and interests---they often talk about “being on the same wavelength.” The more closely involved people become, the more they depend on one another.People want to do friends favors and hate to let them down.Equally, friends have to learn to make allowances for each other, to put up with annoying habits, and to accept differences in opinion.Imagine going on a long trip with someone you occasionally meet for a drink! In contrast with marriage, there are no friendship ceremonies to strengthen the relationship between two people. But the mutual support and understanding that results from shared experiences and emotions does seem to create a close and lasting relationship, which can overcome differences in background, and break down barriers of age, class or race.Select the most appropriate answer for each of the following questions.
