第1题

Any person who can read words and understand what they mean is fortunate. More than ha
lf the people in the world cannot read or write. They can learn about things only by watching and listening. However, people who can read are able to learn about anything they wish. People can read a language better if they have listened to it or learned to speak it. Reading, listening, and speaking are ways people come to understand the words of a language. Being able to write also makes reading easier. A mother or father is often a child’s first reading teacher. By speaking to a baby, the parent helps the baby understand what language is and what it is for. Children feel love and joy in the sounds of words. They try to talk back. As babies listen and speak, they store up facts and ideas. Certain things children do in the early years help them learn. Young children enjoy looking at picture books. Later, the parent reads books that the child can look at as well as listen to. At age five many children are beginning to read and write. Some can recognize their own names. Children continue to learn to read in school with their teacher’s help. Sometimes children read out loud. At other times they read silently. They learn to understand and remember. Reading teaches them new facts and helps them get along in everyday life.

It may look like just another playgroup, but a unique educational center in Manhattan is r
eally giving babies something to talk about. "It's a school to teach languages to babies and young children with games, songs--some of the classes also have arts and crafts," said Francois Thibaut, the founder of the Language Workshop for Children, a place where babies become bilingual.

Children as young as few months are exposed to French and Spanish before many of them can even speak English. Educators use special songs and visual (视觉的) aids to ensure that when a child is ready to talk, the languages will not be so foreign. "Children have a unique capacity to learn many languages at the same time," said Thibaut. "Already at nine months, a child can tell the differences between the sounds he or she has heard since birth and the sounds he or she has never heard yet." Thibaut says the best time to expose children to language is from birth to 3 years old. For the last 30 years, the school has been using what it calls the Thibarut Technique, a system that combines language lessons with child's play.

"I always wanted to learn Spanish, but by the time I got to high school it was too late to pick it up and speak fluently," said Marc Lazare, who enrolled his son at the school. "I figured at this age, two, it's a perfect time for him to learn."

Aside from learning a language, the kids also gain a tremendous sense of confidence. One young student boasted that aside from French, she can speak five languages (though that included "monkey" and "lion"). The school gives children the tools to communicate, and sometimes that gives them an advantage over their parents. "I think they sometimes speak French when they think I won't understand them," said parent Foster Gibbons.

Depending on the age group, classes run from 45 minute up to 2 hours. Even when students are not in class, the program is designed to make sure the learning continues at home. Tapes and books are included so kids can practice on their own.

The word "bilingual" in the first paragraph probably means ______

A.capable of using two languages

B.both clever and confident

C.aware of their own limitations and strengths

D.independent of their parents

Some children are backward in speaking. Most often the reason for this is that the mot
her is insensitive to the cues and signals of the infant, whose brain is programmed to mop up(吸收) language rapidly. There are critical times, it seems, when children learn more readily. If these sensitive periods are neglected, the ideal time for acquiring skills passes and they might never be learned so easily again. A bird learns to sing and to fly rapidly at the right time, but the process is slow and hard once the critical stage has passed.Linguists suggest that speech milestones are reached in a fixed sequence and at a constant age, but there are cases where speech has started late in a child who eventually turns out to be of high IQ (Intelligence Quotient(智商. At twelve weeks a baby smiles and utters vowel-like sounds; at twelve months he can speak simple words and under- stand simple commands; at eighteen months he has a vocabulary of thirty to fifty words. At three he knows about 1000 words which he can put into sentences, and at four his language differs from that of his parents in style. rather than grammar.Recent evidence suggests that an infant is born with the capacity to speak. What is special about man's brain, compared with that for the monkey, is the complex system which enables a child to connect the sight and feel of, say, a teddy-bear with the sound pattern "teddy-bear". And even more incredible(不可思议) is the young brain's ability to pick out an order in language from the hubbub(喧哗) of sound around him, to analyse, to combine and recombine the parts of a language in novel ways. But speech has to be triggered(触发), and this depends on interaction between the mother and the child, where the mother recognizes the cues and signals in the child's babbling, (咿咿呀呀) clinging, grasping, crying, smiling, and responds to them. Insensitivity of the mother to these signals dulls the interaction because the child gets discouraged and sends out only the obvious signals. Sensitivity to the child's non-verbal cues is essential to the growth and development of language.

1.The reason some children are backward in speaking today is that ____.

A、they do not listen carefully to their mothers

B、their brains have to absorb too much language at once

C、their mothers do not respond to their attempts to speak

D、their mothers are not intelligent enough to help them

A、difficult periods in the child's life

B、moments when the child becomes critical towards its mother

C、important stages in the child's development

D、times when mothers often neglect their children

3.Which of the following is NOT implied in the passage____.

A、The faculty of speech is inborn in man.

B、Children do not need to be encouraged to speak.

C、The child's brain is highly selective.

D、Most children learn their language in definite stages.

4.It the mother does not respond to her child's signals ____.

A、the child will never be able to speak properly

B、the child will stop giving out signals

C、the child will invent a language of its own

D、the child will make little effort to speak

5.Which of the following is true according to the passage____.

A、By the age of a year and a half the child's vocabulary is still under 100 words.

B、By the age of four children still make many grammatical mistakes.

C、The author does not believe that children select and analyse their language.

D、All children of high IQ start to speak early.

Who is disabled in China?

China is a country with a large number of disabled.Almost 60 million people have vision, hearing, speech, limb, intellectual or mental impairments. There is one disabled person in every 20 Chinese, and one out of every five households on average has a disabled family member.

According to nationwide surveys of the disabled, handicapped children under 14 account for 16 percent of the total handicapped population, and they display the greatest need for rehabilitative training as they display the highest recovery rates after early therapy. Those disabled between the ages of 15 and 59 account for 44 percent, but often their disabilities are not very severe.Although they are more or less able to work, they require vocational training, ‘cultural education’ and special employment.

The disabled over 60 years of age account for 40 percent. Many of them become handicapped due to illness or loss of various functions. Some live alone without any income, and therefore their insurance, rehabilitation, and medical needs have become a social issue.

The illiterate and semi-illiterate suffer from limited employment opportunities, and often they become socially handicapped as well. These people, often neglected, pose another social problem.

English has never been the only language in use over the British Isles , and it certainly is not now!

English has never been the only language in use over the British Isles , and it certainly is not now! Welsh is still used in Wales. Some Welsh people still speak it as their mother tongue , and it is widely taught in Welsh schools. Some people in Scotland and in Ireland still use a language that is related to Welsh. It is called Gaelic. These languages have a long history in these islands - longer than the history of English. In addition , people from

overseas have settled in England quite recently during this century. In some industrial cities , though not generally in Britain , you find groups of people who speak Polish , and other groups speaking the languages of the Indian subcontinent. A survey of North London schools in the early 1980' s found that nearly a third of the children spoke a language other than English at home.

The majority of the 55 million people living in England use English all the time. Standard English , that is , written English , is in use throughout Britain. Spoken English , however , sounds very different in different parts of the country. There is a story , a play. by the famous writer George Bernard Shaw , about a professor of English Language who can tell you someone' s address when he hears that person speak! That is exaggeration of course. Not even a Professor , who has studied the sounds of English all his life , can really do that. However ,it is true hat most people who have lived for a long time in Britain can tell a number of things about the people as soon as they speak! Usually we cannot tell the speaker' s address

, but we can guess the part of the country where the person comes from. We can tell how well educated he or she is too! If an international user of English , like anyone of you here , happens to meet speakers from , say , the North or the West of England , you may find them hard to understand. Unless you understand what is going on your confidence in your ability to use the language may be badly shaken.

36. Gaelic is related to Welsh. ()

37. Welsh is not taught in schools anymore. ()

39. Written English is in use throughout Britain but spoken English sounds different in different parts of the country. ()
