I was sitting in my kitchen. My mom stood in front of me, hardly keeping the tears fro
m spilling over. She told me that my three-year-old cousin had cancer. Hearing this, I went completely numb. How could this be happening? I had just seen her, and she was fine. These things didn’t happen to our family, that’s what my uncle said. It seemed like the world turned upside down; just last week my grandmother had passed away. I felt like I couldn’t get my feet on solid ground. That’s when my sister, Madi, came down the stairs with her long brown hair freshly washed. She sat next to me and smiled. Despite what was happening, everything would work out, her smile seemed to say. “Mom, do you think I could get my hair cut tomorrow?” Madi asked. “Sure,” Mom said , starting to wash the dishes. “ I want to donate it to Locks of Love ” Madi smiled. My mom stopped washing and turned to look at her. “ Are you sure? ” I noticed that Mom was holding back tears. This was a sacrifice(牺牲 ) for Madi. Her long hair was an importa nt part of her. “Yeah, it’s just hair. Eventually it will grow back.” She said. “All right,” Mom said quietly, smiling again. Madi gave up a part of herself for a while. Under normal conditions, the act of communication requires the presence of at least two
persons: one who sends and one who receives the communication. In order to communicate thoughts and feelings, there must be a conventional system of signs or symbols that mean the same to the sender and the receiver.

The means of communication are too numerous and varied for systematic classification; therefore, the analysis must begin with the means of receiving communication. Reception of communication is achieved by our senses. Sight, hearing, and touching seem to play the most important roles. Smell and taste play very limited roles, for they cannot receive intellectual expression from fully developed systems of sings and symbols.

Examples of visual communication are gesture and imitation. Although both frequently accompany speech, there are systems that rely solely on sight, such as those used by deaf, and dumb persons. Another means of communicating visually is by signals of fire, smoke, flags, or flashing light. Feelings may be simply communicated by touch, such as by handshaking or backslapping, although a highly developed system of hand-stroking has enabled blind, deaf, and dumb persons to communicate intelligently. Whistling to someone, applauding in a theater, and other forms of communication by sound rely upon the ear as a receiver. The most fully developed form. of auditory communication is, of course, the spoken language.

The means of communication mentioned so far have two features in common: they last only a short time, and the persons involved must be relatively close to each other. Therefore, all are restricted in time and space.

A、gesturing

B、handshaking

C、smelling

D、hand-stroking

4、The author specifically mentions that speech is______

A、often used when other means are impossible

B、necessary for normal communication

C、the only highly developed system of communication

D、the most developed form. of communication based on hearing

5、According to the passage, means of communication _________

A、can develop quickly if there is enough time and space

Business cards are less important in American culture than they are in Asian culture. But knowing the right way to handle business cards is a useful skill wherever you are.

Requesting someone's business card is a straightforward(直截了当的、坦率的)process. You need only say: "Do you have a business card?" or "May I have your business card?"

When you want to present your own card, you can say, "Here's my card. Feel free to call me if you have any other questions." Or, you might say, "Please send the information to this address. I look forward to hearing from you soon."

It's not polite to directly refuse a request from someone for your business card. Instead, you can say, "Sorry, but I'm afraid I'm all out at the moment." or "l forgot to bring them with me."
