How can a single postage stamp be worth $16 800? Any mistake made in the printing of a stamp raises its value to stamp collectors. A mistake on one inexpensive postage stamp has made the stamp worth a million and a half times its original value. The mistake was made more than a hundred years ago in the British colony Mauritius , a small island in the Indian Ocean. In 1847 an order for stamps was sent to a London printer – Mauritius was to become the fourth country in the world to issue stamps. Before the order was filled and delivered, a ball was planned at Mauritius ’ Government House, and stamps were needed to send out the invitations. A local printer was instructed to copy the design for the stamps. He accidentally marked the words " Post Office" instead of " Post Paid" on the several hundred stamps that he printed.

Today there are only twenty-six of these misprinted stamps left—fourteen One-Penny Orange-Reds and twelve Two-Penny Blues. Because of the Two-Penny Blue's rareness and age, collectors have paid as much as $ 16800 for it.

1、The best title for this section is ____.

A、The “Post Paid” Error

B、The Twopenny Blue

C、A London Printer’s Error

D、How Mauritius Became Famous

A、All correctly printed stamps are worthless.

B、Mauritians needed the stamps to send out invitations to a ball.

C、The printer was punished for his mistake.

3、$16 800 is the collector’s value of ____.

A、the One Penny Orange – Red

C、the Twopenny Blue

D、both A and C

4、The mistake in the locally printed postage stamps was in the ____.

A、price

B、wording

C、color

There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. Information in longterm memory ca
n be remembered at a later time when it is needed. The information may be kept for days or weeks. However, information in short-term memory is kept for only a few seconds, usually by repeating the information over and over. The following experiment shows how short-term memory has been studied.

Henning studied how students who are learning English as a second language remember vocabulary. The subjects in his experiment were 75 college students. They represented all levels of ability in English; beginning, intermediate, advanced, and native-speaking students.

To begin, the subjects listened to a recording of a native speaker reading a paragraph in English. Following the recording, the subjects took a 15-question test to see which words they remembered. Each question had four choices. The subjects had to circle the word they had heard in the recording. Some of the questions had four choices that sound alike. For example, weather, whether, wither, and wetter are four words that sound alike. Some of the questions had four choices that have the same meaning. Method, way, manner, and system would be four words with the same meaning. Finally the subjects took a language proficiency test.

Henning found that students with a lower proficiency in English made more of their mistakes on words that sound alike; students with a higher proficiency made more of their mistakes on words that have the same meaning. Henning's results suggest that beginning students hold the sound of words in their short-term memory, while advanced students hold the meaning of words in their short-term memory.

Henning made the experiment in order to study ______.

A.how students remember English vocabulary by short-term memory

B.how students learnEnglish vocabulary

C.how to develop students' ability in English

D.how long information in short-term memory is kept

With the explosion of digital media in recent years, a growing number of students are

spending their time in front of the small screen---whether it’s a Smartphone or tablet. In just two years, the number of US children using digital media has doubled to 72 percent, according to a survey by Common Sense Media.

On average, students spend about two hours a day in front of the screen. Watching TV makes up half of this time. But gradually, the time children spend watching TV is decreasing, with more and more time being given to digital media. Some of the common things kids do with digital media are playing games, watching videos and sending messages to friends.

The digital world can be used very effectively. In the survey, 74 percent of teachers said that digital media would improve students’ learning. As students can quickly get hold of information they need.

However, without guidance from teachers or parents, digital media may have bad influence on students’ attention span and communication skills. So it’s always best to use your smartphone and tablet carefully.

When using digital media, you need to find a balance. Just like study, too much can lead to information overload, and give you a headache. Also, make sure your smartphone or tablet doesn’t take priority over more important tasks. Give your eyes a rest, and remember: offline is just as fun as online.

Listen to him, and you will hear the loudness, the quality and the musical note of his voice always changing according to what he is talking about.

The fact that a good teacher has some of the gifts of a good actor doesn't mean that he will indeed be able to act well on the stage, for there are very important differences between the teacher's work and the actor's.The actor has to speak words which he has learnt by heart;he has to repeat exactly the same words each time he plays certain part, even his movements and the ways in which he uses his voice are usually fixed beforehand. What he has to do is to make all these carefully learnt words and actions seem natural on the stage.

A good teacher works in quite a different way. His audience takes an active part in his play: they ask and answer questions, they obey orders, and if they don't understand something, they say so. The teacher therefore has to suit his act to the needs of his audience, which is his class. He cannot learn his part by heart, but must invent it as he goes along.

I have known many teachers who were fine actors in class but were unable to take part in a stage play because their brains wouldn't keep discipline: they could not keep strictly to what another had written.

1、 What is the text about? _____

C、 What teachers and actors could learn from each other.

D、 The similarities and differences between a teacher's work and an actor's.

A、 The teacher must learn everything by heart.

B、 The teacher knows how to control his voice better than an actor.

C、 The teacher has to deal with unexpected situations.

D、 The teacher has to use more facial expressions.

3、 The main difference between students in class and a theatre audience is that _____.

A、 students can move around in the classroom

B、 students must keep silent while theatre audience needn't

C、 no memory work is needed for the students

D、 the students must take part in their teacher's plays

4、 A good teacher's voice _____.

A、 should be clear and fully under his control

B、 should not be too loud or too low

C、 should be fixed before he goes to class

D、 All of the above.
