It was once considered a good idea to keep the car engine running on idle for a minute or two following a cold start.Today, with modern technology, the opposite is true.An engine operating under road conditions will warm up faster and run more efficiently than the one that has been idling,as this just burns up gas(on average about a gallon an hour).

If possible, when you have a full tank of gas, park the car facing downhill,as this will prevent any gas from leaking out of the tank.Parking in areas of little or no sunlight helps prevent evaporation(蒸发)of the gas which would occur if you parked in the hot sun.Your car will stay cooler, too, and this means less gas is consumed for the air conditioner once the engine is started.

Stay away from wide-track tires if you want top mileage for your dollar.Narrow-track tires produce less friction and thus rolling resistance. The same effect is achieved by adding three to five pounds above recommended pressure to each tire while this won't noticeably affect your car's mobility,it will increase the life of your tires and gas mileage.

Check tire pressure often, especially when the weather turns cold. The difference between winter and summer tire pressure can be as much as eight pounds. This could cost you two miles per gallon.

D.is necessary in cold weather

3.Parking your car in a cool place().

A.will take it longer to warm up the engine

B.means less gas consumption for the air conditioner

选词填空:For many Americans, 2013 ended with an unusually bitter cold spell.

Questions 36 to 45 are based on the following passage.

For many Americans, 2013 ended with an unusually bitter cold spell. November and December(36) early snow and bone-chilling temperatures in much of the country, part of a year when, for the first time in two(37), record-cold days will likely turn out to have outnumbered record-warm ones. But the U.S. was the exception; November was the warmest ever (38), and current data indicates that 2013 is likely to have been the fourth hottest year on record.

Enjoy the snow now, because (39)are good that 2014 will be even hotter, perhaps the hottest year since records have been kept. That’s because, scientists are predicting, 2014 will be an EI Niuo year.

So large is the Pacific, covering 30% of the planet’s surface, that the(41 )energy generated by its warming is enough to touch off a series of weather changes around the world. EI Ninos are (42)with abnormally dry conditions in Southeast Asia and Australia. They can lead to extreme rain in parts of North and South America, even as southern Africa(43) dry weather. If you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season to season. You are
probably a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of the year. A well-known scientist, Ellsworth Huntington (1876-1937), concluded from other men's work and his own among people in different climates that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities. He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in the summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in the summer.

Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man's mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature. Fall is the next-best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking!

1). Huntington based his conclusions on ___________.

A. work with people in different climates

B. records of temperature changes

C. records of change in his own intelligence

D. all of the above

2). Ellsworth Huntington decided that climate and temperature have _________.

A. a great effect on everyone's intelligence

B. no effect on people's intelligence

C. effect on only a few people's intelligence

D. some effect on most people's intelligence

3). One possible reason why spring is the best season for thinking is that ___________.

A. there are some things making all nature different from before

B. it is neither too warm nor too cold

C. it is more natural for the development of mental abilities

D. it lasts longer than the other seasons

4). The two best seasons for thinking seem to be _____________.

A. winter and summer

B. fall and winter

C. spring and fall

D. summer and spring

5). According to the passage above, vacations from thinking should be taken ___________.

A. as seldom as possible

B. during spring and fall

C. several times throughout the year

D. during the summer

A greenhouse is a building made of glass which is used for keeping plants when t
he outside temperature is low. In a similar way there are several gases in the atmosphere which trap(捕捉)the heat produced by the sun and prevent it from escaping. These gases are known as"greenhouse gases",and the way in which they trap heat in the atmosphere is called the "greenhouse effect". This is not simply air pollution. Most of the main greenhouse gases exist naturally in small amounts in our atmosphere, and without them earth would be 30 degrees colder and human life would not exist. In other words, the greenhouse effect is a natural course which is to some degree helpful to us.

The problem is that in the last century and a half, we have been putting too many of these gases into the earth's atmosphere by burning large quantities of coal and oil and by cutting down forests. The rapid increase in greenhouse gases is making the world warmer. The world's temperature has already gone up by half a degree this century, and the sea level has risen by 10 centimetres. If the amount of carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)in the atmosphere doubles, there will probably be a rise in the earth's temperature of between 1 and 4 degrees. This may seem a small increase, but it would be enough to cause major changes in geography and agriculture. Large areas of the world would be flooded, and some areas would become dry and unable to produce crops. It is important, too, to consider that there may be a delay of about 30 years in the greenhouse effect. This means that we are probably experiencing only now the effect of the gases put into the atmosphere before the 1960s. Since then, our use of these gases has greatly increased.

1. The"greenhouse effect"means _____.

A. the way in which gases are used for keeping plants warm

B. a natural course which is some degree helpful to us

C. the way"greenhouse gases"trap heat on the earth

D. the whole course in which greenhouse gases prevent heat

2. If there were no greenhouse effect, _____.

A. no plants would grow on our planet

B. earth would be thirty degrees colder

C. man could not live on the earth

D. All of the above answers are correct

3. Which of the following is NOT true? _____

A. Burning too much coal and oil produces lots of greenhouse gases.

B. It has become warmer on the earth now than in the past.

C. Gases put into the atmosphere now will affect the earth years later.

D. The temperature in a greenhouse is as high as that in the atmosphere.

4. Suppose the earth's temperature rose by 3 degrees, _____.

A. great harm would be done to mankind

B. the sea level would go by 10 centimetres

C. all the land in the world would be flooded

D. crops would be unable to grow on the earth

5. This passage mainly deals with _____.

A. the concept(概念)and harm of greenhouse effect

B. the relation between greenhouse gases and man

C. the concept and change of greenhouse effect

D. the effect of the rise of the earth's temperature

第10题

Did you know that all human beings have a "comfort zone" regulating the distance they stand from someone when they talk? This distance varies in interesting ways among people of different cultures.

Greeks, some of the Eastern Mediterraneen, and many of those from South America normally stand quite close together when they talk, often moving their faces even closer as they warm up in a conversation. North Americans find this awkward and often back away a few inches. Studies have found that they tend to feel most comfortable at about 21 inches apart. In much of Asia and Mrica, there's even more space between two speakers in conversation. This greater space subtly lends an air of dignity and respect. This matter of space is nearly always unconscious, but it is interesting to observe.

This difference applies also to the closeness with which people sit together, the extent to which they lean over one another in conversation, how they move as they argue or make an emphatic (强调的) point. In the United States, for example, people try to keep their bodies apart even in a crowded elevator, in Paris they take it as it comes!

Although North Americans have a relatively wide" comfort zone" for talking, they communicate a great deal with their hands--not only with gesture but also with touch. They put a sympathetic hand on a person' s shoulder to demonstrate warmth of feeling, or an arm around him in sympathy; they pat an arm in reassurance(放心)or stroke a child's head in fondness; they readily take someone's arm to help him across a street or direct him along an unfamiliar mute. To many people -- especially those from Asia or the Moslem(穆斯林) countries--such bodily contact is unwelcome, especially if done with the left hand. The left hand carries no special significance in the U. S. Many Americans are simple left and use that hand more.

In terms of bodily distance, North Americans  ().

A.are the same to South Americans

B.stand even closer than Greeks

C.feel embarrassed when too close

D.stand nearer during a conversation
