If there is any single factor that makes for success in living, it is the ability to profit by defeat.Every success I know has been achieved because the person was able to analyze defeat and actually profit by it in his next undertaking.Confuse defeat with failure, and you are doomed indeed to failure, for it isn't defeat that makes you fail: it is your own refusal to see in defeat the guide and encouragement to success.Defeats are nothing to be ashamed of.They are routine incidents in the life of every man who achieves success. But defeat is a dead loss unless you do face it without feeling ashamed, analyze it and learn why you failed.Defeat, in other words, can help to cure its own cause. Not only does defeat prepare us for success, but nothing else can arouse within us such a compelling desire to succeed. If you let a baby grasp a rod and try to pull it away, he will cling more and more tightly until his whole weight is suspended. It is this same reaction that should give you new and greater strength every time you are defeated. If you fully use the power which defeat gives, you can accomplish with it far more than what you are capable of.36.The author().A.orders you to analyze defeatB.wants you to face defeatC.advises you to let a baby grasp a rodD.warns you not to confuse defeat with fail37.Defeat is valuable().A.because it is a factorB.because it isn't defeat that makes you failC.because it provides the guide and encouragement to successD.because it is not a thing to be ashamed of38.What does the author know?().A.he knows every success in lifeB.he knows the factor making for successC.he knows every man who is able to analyze defeatD.he knows the life of every man39.The person who was able to analyze the defeat is likely().A.to be a successorB.to face it with feeling ashamedC.to achieve successD.to be ashamed of it40.What does the author advise one to do with the power which defeat gives? One should().A.explore itB.explain itC.let a baby grasp a rodD.learn it

Who is disabled in China?

China is a country with a large number of disabled.Almost 60 million people have vision, hearing, speech, limb, intellectual or mental impairments. There is one disabled person in every 20 Chinese, and one out of every five households on average has a disabled family member.

According to nationwide surveys of the disabled, handicapped children under 14 account for 16 percent of the total handicapped population, and they display the greatest need for rehabilitative training as they display the highest recovery rates after early therapy. Those disabled between the ages of 15 and 59 account for 44 percent, but often their disabilities are not very severe.Although they are more or less able to work, they require vocational training, ‘cultural education’ and special employment.

The disabled over 60 years of age account for 40 percent. Many of them become handicapped due to illness or loss of various functions. Some live alone without any income, and therefore their insurance, rehabilitation, and medical needs have become a social issue.

The illiterate and semi-illiterate suffer from limited employment opportunities, and often they become socially handicapped as well. These people, often neglected, pose another social problem.

Material culture refers to the touchable, material "things"—physical objects that can be s
een, held, fell, used — that a culture produces. Examining a culture's tools and technology can tell us about the group's history and way of life. Similarly, research into the material culture of music: can help us to understand the music culture. The most vivid body of "things" in it, of course, are musical instruments. We cannot bear for ourselves the actual sound of any musical performance before the 1870s when phonograph was invented, so we rely on instruments for important information about music-cultures in the remote past and their develop ment. Here we have two kinds of evidence: instruments well preserved and instruments pictured in art. Through the study of instruments, as well as paintings, written documents, and so on, we can explore the movement of music from the Near East to China over a thousand years ago, or we can outline the spread of Near Eastern influence to Europe that resulted in the development of most of the instruments in the symphony orchestra.

Sheet music or printed music, too, is material culture. Scholars once defined folk music-cultures as those in which people learn and sing music by ear rather than from print, but research shows mutusl influence

among oral and written sources during the past few centuries in Europe, Britain, and America. Printed versions limit variety because they tend to standardize any song, yet they stimulate people to create new and different songs. Besides, the ability to read music notation has a far-reaching effect on musicians and, when it becomes widespread, on the music cul Lure as a whole.

One more important part of music's material culture should be singled out: the influence of the electronic media—radio, record player, tape recorder, television, and videocassette, with the future promising talking and singing computers and other developments. This is all part of the "information revolution", a twentieth-century phenomenon as important as the industrial revolution was in the nineteenth. These electronic media are not just limited to modern nations; the)' have affected music cultures all over the globe.

Research into the material culture of a nation is of great importance bucause ______.

A.it helps produce new cultural tools and technology

B.it can reflect the development of the nation

C.it helps understand the nation's past and present

D.it can demonstrate the nations civilization

Music is deep-rooted in the cultural background that fosters it. We now pay more and more attention to traditional or ethnic features in folk music and are willing to preserve the folk music as we do with many traditional cultural heritage. Musicians all over the world are busy with recording classic music in their country for the sake of their unique culture. As always, people’s aspiration will always focus on their individuality rather than universal features that are shared by all cultures alike.

One more important part of music’s material culture should be singled out: the influence of the electronic media—radio, record player, tape recorder, and television, with the future promising talking and singing computers and other developments. This is all part of the “information-revolution”, a twentieth century phenomenon as important as the industrial revolution in the nineteenth.
