Passage Five

Some people hate everything that is modern. They cannot imagine how anyone can really like modern music; they find it hard to accept the new fashions in clothing; they think that all modern painting is ugly; and they seldom have a good word for the new buildings that are being built everywhere in the world. Such people look for perfection in everything, and they take their standards of perfection from the past. They are usually impatient with anyone who is brave enough to experiment with new or to express himself or the age in materials original ways. It is, of course, true that many artists do not succeed in their work and instead produce works that can only be considered as failures. If the work of art is a painting, the artist's failure concerns himself alone, but if it is a building, his failure concerns others too, because it may damage the beauty of the whole place. This does sometimes happen, but it is completely untrue to say, as some people do, that modern architecture is nothing.

We can't judge every modern building by the standards of the ancient time, even though we admire the ancient buildings. Technologically, the modern buildings are more advanced. The modern architect knows he should learn from the ancient works, but with his greater resources of knowledge and materials, he will never be content to imitate the past. He is too proud to do that.

51. Some people hate everything that is modern because ______.

A. they are aged

B. they find it hard to accept modern things

C. they take their standards of perfection from the Greek

D. they look at things by the standards of the past

There are two other possible causes which are worth mentioning.More and more people in Britain live in large towns. In a large town no one knows who anyone else is or where they live. But in the village I come from crimes are rare because everyone knows everyone else.

Although it is difficult to explain,I think the last cause is very important.Perhaps there is something with our society which encourages violence and crime. It is a fact that all the time children are exposed to films and reports about crime and violence. Many people do not agree that this influences the young people, but I think that young people are very much influenced by the society they grow in.I feel that the fault may be as much with our whole society as with these young people.

第6题

Friends play an important role in our lives, and although we may take friendship for grant
ed, we often don't clearly understand how we make friends. While we get on well with a number of people, we are usually friends with only a very few—for example, the average among students is about 6 per person. In all the cases of friendly relationships, two people like one another and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degree of intimacy between them and the reasons for their shared interest vary enormously. As we get to know people we take into account things like age, race, economic conditions, social position and intelligence. These factors are of prime importance, as it is often more difficult to get on with people when there is a clear difference in means, background, maturity, and/or capabilities.

Some friendly relationships can be kept on despite argument or heated discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have similar ideas, beliefs, attitudes, and interests. In fact, close friends may sometimes talk about "being on the same wavelength". It generally takes time to reach this point. And the more intimately involved people become, the more they rely on each other, People want to do friends favors and hate to break a promise. Equally, friends have to learn to put up with any annoying habits and to tolerate differences of opinion.

In contrast with marriage, there are no government-sanctioned friendship ceremonies to strengthen the association between two people. But the support and understanding of each other that result from shared experiences and emotions do seem to create a powerful bond, which can overcome difference in background, and thus break down barriers of age, class, or race.

According to the author, ______.

A.all those who get on well with each other are friends

B.friends are closer than people who just get on well with each other

C.everyone understands clearly how to make friends

D.every student has six friends
