An older friend once gave me a piece of advice, “Enjoy the last few weeks of college,” she said, “since college is the best time of your life.”This was not the first time I’d heard such a statement, but with graduation fast coming close, her words especially struck me. It seemed a bit disappointing to reach one’s life peak at only 22 years of age, but in her opinion, college had been one of the best times in my life so far. I made friends, took classes, and learned a great deal about myself. But I was also excited for the time after college—moving to a new city, starting a new job, and becoming a “real” person. I hoped that my great dreams were practical. Then, last week I read a column in Real Simple Magazine called 100 Years of Attitude, in which women 100 years or older shared their life experiences and views. I noticed that none of them considered college as the “best” time of their life. Not all of them went to college, but still in most cases their teens and twenties were not the best times of their life. They said some of their favorite times were raising their children, traveling after retirement, and even enjoying their present time and age.Enjoying one’s present time and age was a clear theme of the interviews. A piece of advice given by the women was about the importance of making the best of all situations. I think it more accurate than that of my friend; I can say with certainty that if I am lucky enough to make it to 100. I refuse to spend the last 80 years of my life plummeting (跌落) downhill,or even leveling off.I am sure that our eagerness and devotion will make us college students live a meaningful life. We will not just look backwards or miss our college days. We will look forward in excitement about continued journey uphill.1.Which of the following opinions does the writer agree with?A.College is the best time of one’s life.B.Twenties were the best time of the old people.C.One should make the best of all situations.D.One should not look backwards at their college time.2.In the second paragraph, the writer wants to say________.A.her achievements in college would be the peak of her successB.she is looking forward to living as a “real” person in collegeC.she becomes more and more uneasy with graduationD.she is satisfied with the college life but is hopeful for the future3.The column the writer read is mainly about those old women’s ________.A.best time of life at youthB.life experiences and viewsC.different opinions about lifeD.favorite time with best friends4.By saying “I refuse to spend the last 80 years of my life plummeting downhill,or even leveling off” (in Paragraph 4), the writer really means_____.A.she will not spend the rest of her time at collegeB.she will not just obtain a college level certificateC.she will not be satisfied with what she has already accomplishedD.she will not be content with the life in the future5.Which of the following words can be used to describe the writer?A.AmbitiousB.PracticalC.ImaginativeD.Proud

When I begin to look back on all friends whom I have had, I quickly came to the conclu
sion that Jerry was the most important and had the greatest effect upon my life. His family moved to my block when I was only 10. Jerry was 15 at the time, but the fact that he was so much older than me seemed to make no difference to him. I was very glad that he liked me. We took long walks together, on which he would tell me stories he had heard form. TV and radio programs.

But as months went by, a change came into our friendship. Jerry almost stopped coming by the house, and every time I went to his house or telephoned, he put me off with some excuses such as "I'm studying now" or "I've got some jobs to do for Mum". When we passed on the street, he would still give me a warm smile and friendly wave with a "Hi, kid", but he would hardly ever stop to talk. Finally I realized that he was no longer interested in me and that his, taste had changed. I noticed him with a girl once in a while and several times saw him going out in his family's car on a Friday or Saturday night. I simply couldn't understand what was so great about girls and parties.

But I was hurt when he finally made me know that our friendship was at an end. Of course he didn't really mean to hurt me, but it was a long time before I realized that it was an age problem that caused the break. There were a world of differences between the ideas and interests of a 17-year-old and a 12-year-old. Now that I'm over sixteen myself, I realized this, and the hurt I got then has become happy memories of the good times we were once together. I wonder if millions of other boys and girls have had a similar experience.

Although they’re still the lovely young kitten or pup in our minds, your pets need extra care as they reach their senior years. Here’s our list of suggestions to keep them happy and healthy for as long as possible.

Foodie

Keeping your pet’s diet healthy and nutritious(有营养的) is very important at any stage of their life, but as they become old they need a different set of vitamins and minerals. Different sizes and breeds of pets will have different needs, so it’s worth a quick chat with your vet to discover what they would recommend.

Gym membership

Although they may seem tired and slow for outdoor activities, this doesn’t mean they shouldn't keep exercise anymore. You don’t have to drag them on a 10-mile uphill hike, but encourage your pet to get out into the fresh air.The sights and smells should inspire their natural urge to trot about and explore again. If they’re lazy, try small indoor games and toys that will keep their mind active.

Fit not fat

If you’re feeding your pet healthy foods in appropriate sized portions(分量)and making sure they’re getting enough exercise, you shouldn’t have an overweight friend at your side. However, if you still think they need to lose a few pounds, you can discuss with your vet how to help them lose weight and keep a healthy weight.

The dreaded vets

Not many people enjoy a trip to the doctors and it’s certainly the same for your pet.But regular checks at the vets can prevent minor health issues from getting m ore and more serious. Older pets should be taken to the vet at least once every six months. On your next visit, ask your vet what common issues usually affect their particular breed(种类)such as arthritis (关节炎)or diabetes(肥胖症). You can then be more careful when taking care of them.

听力原文: A friend of mine told me that when he was a young man, he went to work as a teac
her in one of the states of India.

One day, he received an invitation to join at the ruler's palace. Very pleased, he went to tell his colleagues. They laughed and told him the meaning of the invitation. They had all been invited and each person who was invited had to bring with him a certain number of silver' and gold coins. The number of coins varied according to the person's position in the service of the government. My friend's income was not high, so he did not have to pay much.

Each person bowed before the ruler. His gold went onto one heap; his silver went onto another heap. And in this way he paid his income tax for the year.

This was the simple way of collecting income tax. The tax on property was also collected simply. The ruler gave a man the power to collect a tax from each owner of land or property in a certain area, if this man promised to pay the ruler a certain amount of money. Of course, the tax collector managed to collect more money than he paid to the ruler. The difference between the sum of money he collected and the sum of money he gave to the ruler was his profit.

What do we know about the speaker's friend?

A.He was once a friend of the ruler.

B.He was a tax collector.

C.He was a government official.

D.He was once a school teacher in India.

A lawyer friend of mine has devoted herself to the service of humanity. Her special area is called "public interest law".

Many other lawyers represent only clients who can pay high fees. All lawyers have had expensive and highly specialized training, and they work long, difficult hours for the money they earn. But what happens to people who need legal help and cannot afford to pay these lawyers’ fees?

Public interest lawyers fill this need. Lisa, like older public interest lawyers, earns a salary much below what some lawyers can earn. Because she is willing to take less money, her clients need the help, even if they can pay nothing at all.

Some clients need legal help because stores have cheated them with faulty merchandise. Others are in unsafe apartments, or are threatened with eviction (驱逐,赶出) and have no place to go to. Their cases are called "civil" cases. Still others are accused of criminal acts, and seeking those public interest lawyers who handle "criminal" cases. These. are just a few of the many situations in which men and women who are public interest lawyers serve to extend justice throughout our society.

A person who needs and uses legal help is called a ________ 查看材料
