During sleep, the fatigue (疲劳) of the body disappears and recuperation (恢复) begins

During sleep, the fatigue (疲劳) of the body disappears and recuperation (恢复) begins. The tired mind gathers new energy. Once awake, the memory improves, and annoyance and problems are seen in a better perspective.

Some adults require little sleep; others need eight to ten hours in every twenty-four. Infants sleep sixteen to eighteen hours daily and, as they grow older, the amount gradually diminishes. Young students may need twelve hours; university students may need ten. A worker with a physically demanding job may also need ten, whereas an executive worker under great pressure may manage on six to eight. Many famous people are reputed to have required little sleep. Napoleon, Thomas Edison and Charles Darwin apparently averaged only four to six hours a night.

Whatever your individual need, you can be sure that by the age of thirty you will have slept for a total of more than twelve years. By that age you will also have developed a sleep routine: a favorite hour, a favorite bed, a favorite position, and a formula you need to follow in order to rest comfortably. Investigators have tried to find out how long a person can go without sleep. Several people have reached more than 115 hours ?nearly five days, whereas animals kept awake for from five to eight days have died of exhaustion. The limit for human beings is probably about a week.

1、The writer implies that _________

A、sleep is important for good mental and physical health

B、a light sleep is as restful as a deep sleep

C、memory is improved during sleep

D、sleep is relatively unimportant for human beings

2、From the amount of sleep Napoleon, Edison and Darwin required, we can infer that_______.

A、they were famous great men

B、 they were executive workers

C、 they were intelligent people

D、 they were involved in mentally demanding work

3、The amount of sleep required ________.

A、varies greatly from individual to individual

B、 depends on an individual''s age

C、 relates to an individual''s occupation

D、 all of the above.

4、According to the passage, the sleeping routine will be built at the age of _________.

A、10

B、20

C、30

D、40

5、From animal experiments, we can conclude that the final result of the lack of sleep is probably _________

A、mental illness

B、mental breakdown

C、susceptibility to illness

D、death

We all know that DNA has the ability to identify individuals but, because it is inherited,
there are also regions of the DNA strand which can relate an individual to his or her family (immediate and extended), tribal group and even an entire population. Molecular Genealogy (宗谱学) can use this unique identification provided by the genetic markers to link people together into family trees. Pedigrees (家谱) based on such genetic markers can mean a break-through for family trees where information is incomplete or missing due to adoption, illegitimacy or lack of records. There are many communities and populations which have lost precious records due to tragic events such as the fire in the Irish courts during Civil War in 1921 or American slaves for whom many records were never kept in the first place.

The main objective of the Molecular Genealogy Research Group is to build a database containing over 100,000 DNA samples from individuals all over the world. These individuals will have provided a pedigree chart of at least four generations and a small blood sample. Once the database has enough samples to represent the world genetic make-up, it will eventually help in solving many issues regarding genealogies that could not be done by relying only on traditional written records. Theoretically, any individual will someday be able to trace his or her family origins through this database.

In the meantime, as the database is being created, molecular genealogy can already verify possible or suspected relationships between individuals. "For example, if two men sharing the same last name believe that they are related, but no written record proves this relationship, we can verify this possibility by collecting a sample of DNA from both and looking for common markers (in this case we can look primarily at the Y chromosome (染色体)," explains George Green, a member of the BYU Molecular Genealogy research team.

People in a large area may possess the same DNA thread because______.

A.DNA is characteristic of a region

B.they are beyond doubt of common ancestry

C.DNA strand has the ability to identify individuals

D.their unique identification can be provided via DNA

In the old days, children were familiar with birth and death as part of life. This is perh
aps the first generation of American youngster(年轻人)who have never been close by during the birth of a baby and have never experienced the death of a family member.

Nowadays when people grow old, we often send them to nursing homes. When they get sick, we transfer them to a hospital, where children are forbidden to visit terminally ill patients--even when those patients are their parents. This deprives(剥夺)the dying patient of significant family members during the last few days of his life and it deprives the children of an experience of death, which is an important learning experience.

Some of my colleagues and I once interviewed and followed approximately 500 terminally ill patients in order to find out what they could teach us and how we could be of more benefit, not just to them but to the members of their families as well. We were most impressed by the fact that even those patients who were not told of their serious illness were quite aware of its potential outcome.

It is important for family members, and doctors and nurses to understand these patients' communications in order to truly understand their needs, fears, and fantasies(幻想). Most of our patients welcomed another human being with whom they could talk openly, honestly, and frankly about their trouble. Many of them shared with us their tremendous need to be informed, to be kept up-to-date on their medical condition, and to be told when the end was near. We found out that patients who had been dealt with openly and frankly were better able to cope with the approach of death and finally to reach a true stage of acceptance prior to death.

Five hundred critically ill patients were investigated with the main purpose of ______.

A.learning how to best help them and their families

B.observing how they reacted to the crisis of death

C.helping them and their families overcome the fear of death

D.finding out their attitude towards the approach of death

Who is disabled in China?

China is a country with a large number of disabled.Almost 60 million people have vision, hearing, speech, limb, intellectual or mental impairments. There is one disabled person in every 20 Chinese, and one out of every five households on average has a disabled family member.

According to nationwide surveys of the disabled, handicapped children under 14 account for 16 percent of the total handicapped population, and they display the greatest need for rehabilitative training as they display the highest recovery rates after early therapy. Those disabled between the ages of 15 and 59 account for 44 percent, but often their disabilities are not very severe.Although they are more or less able to work, they require vocational training, ‘cultural education’ and special employment.

The disabled over 60 years of age account for 40 percent. Many of them become handicapped due to illness or loss of various functions. Some live alone without any income, and therefore their insurance, rehabilitation, and medical needs have become a social issue.

The illiterate and semi-illiterate suffer from limited employment opportunities, and often they become socially handicapped as well. These people, often neglected, pose another social problem.
