A man and his girlfriend were married. It was a large celebration. All of their friends

A man and his girlfriend were married. It was a large celebration.

All of their friends and family came to see the lovely ceremony and to partake of the festivities and celebrations. All had a wonderful time.

The bride was gorgeous in her white wedding gown and the groom was very dashing in his black tuxedo. Everyone could tell that the love they had for each other was true.

A few months later, the wife came to the husband with a proposal,

“I read in a magazine, a while ago, about how we can strengthen our marriage,” she offered.

“Each of us will write a list of the things that we find a bit annoying with the other person. Then, we can talk about how we can fix them together and make our lives happier together. ”

Her husband agreed. So each of them went to a separate room in the house and thought of the things that annoyed them about the other. They thought about this question for the rest of the day and wrote down what they came up with.

The next morning, at the breakfast table, they decided that they would go over their lists.

“I'll start,” offered the wife. She took out her list. It had many items on it. Enough to fill 3 pages in fact. As she started, reading the list of the little annoyances, she noticed that tears were starting to appear in her husband's eyes.

“What’s wrong?” she asked.

“Nothing,” the husband replied, “keep reading your list.”

The wife continued to read until she had read all three pages to her husband. She neatly placed her list on the table and folded her hands over the top of it.

“Now,you read your list and then we'll talk about the things on both of our lists, ” she said happily.

Quietly the husband stated, “I don't have anything on my list. I think that you are perfect the way that you are. I don't want you to change anything for me. You are lovely and wonderful and I wouldn't want to try and change anything about you. ”

The wife, touched by his honesty, the depth of his love for her, and his acceptance of her, turned her head and wept.

Cindy Hess began her automotive career as a Design and Development Engineer with Chrysler,
in the fall of 1977. Today, she is Vice-President of Daimler Chrysler, and head of the Small Car Platform. Engineering Department which is directly responsible for the design and development of the Neon, Doge Viper, and all future small cars.

"Many different departments are involved, in bringing a product to market," said Hess, referring to the 2000 Neon. "A company looks into renewing a particular vehicle when its marketplace demand is good, and the profits increase our shareholder's value," explained Hess. "We look to our market research in determining which options we'll keep the same or delete, and which ones we want to add to improve our appeal."

Now that the Neon 2000 is on the market, her team will use survey and research results to determine which option packages work best for the consumer, and what improvements, if any, need to be made. And the best goes on.

Hess supervises 1 200 engineers while managing a successful life as wife and mother. Her secret, she said, is to "always try to give 150 percent in everything I do. The only way I can really balance my work and family is 'by cheating at both ends'. " "For example," Hess said, "I always take my boys to school on the first day of the year--so I come in a little late. A few times a year I leave work for a couple of hours to see my son in a play or to attend his swim meet."

Like most other successful women in the auto industry, Hess's day begins early and ends late. In her case, coaching her son's basketball game ends some of Hess's days. "Occasionally," she adds," I come in to work on the weekends to catch up on paperwork and mail and have also been known to be called to work while I am on vacation."

What is Cindy's chief responsibility now?

A.Renewing promising car models.

B.Supervising production.

C.Doing market research.

D.Developing small cars.

Anna is our only daughter. My wife and I have two sons, and Anna is the youngest in th
e family, but she's twenty-five now. Anna was not well when she was little. It was a very worrying time and she stayed at home a lot. She was seen first by the local doctors, and then she was sent to a specialist in Cardiff where she was diagnosed as diabetic. It was my wife who mainly took care of her then. I am not very good at looking after little children. I suppose I am a bit traditional in that way. But when she grew up a bit, we spent a lot of time together. We loved walking and talking and discussing life. We still love it today. We get on very well. Although she looks like me (tall, dark hair, dark eyes and dark skin), she takes after her mother: she is artistic and musical, and like her mother she's attractive. She loves looking after animals - she has two dogs, three cats and a goat. She lives in a little house in the country. I like animals too. I like riding and hunting, but Anna hates hunting. She thinks it's cruel. We discuss it a lot. She is quiet and a bit shy with strangers. I am more outgoing and I love meeting new people. But she's not boring - actually, she's very funny. She always has lots of stories of her life in the country. She's an art and music teacher in a little village school. She is very good-natured. Anna says we brought her up well, and she's going to bring her children up to be honest and loyal. But I think she was easy to bring up. I don't remember ever telling her off.

2. It can be inferred from the passage the author thinks looking after little children is ().

3. What does 'take after' mean in the first sentence of Para. 2?

Shortly after the British naturalist, Charles Darwin, published his theory of evolution, a
Victorian lady was asked what she thought of the idea that humans and animals were descended from a common ancestor. "Let us hope it is not true," she said. (46)

This story is probably apocryphal, but it illustrates well the attitudes of the time. (47) Many people accept Darwin's view of how we came into being that our bodies evolved through the process of natural selection acting on our genes.

However, Darwin believed evolution was responsible for far more than just our physical characteristics. He saw it as the major influence in shaping our psychology. In- deed, he predicted that "in the distant future, psychology will be based on a new foundation". (48)

To proponents of concepts like free will and personal responsibility, such an idea seems absurd. (49) Their research has revealed increasing evidence that the human mind is made up of innate mechanisms, which control everything from the way we perceive time and space, to how we learn survival techniques and choose mates.

(50) Steven Pinker, Professor of Cognitive Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, likens language ability to computer software, "children learn a new word every 90 minutes of their waking life for years, then they have to figure out how to string them together using a kind of mental computer program. The essence of human language is the ability to convey new ideas by putting words together in different combinations. Since we all have this language 'software' in our minds, we can figure out what others are saying by the meanings of the words and the order in which they are arranged."

A. Today, we are more comfortable with out past.

B. "And, if it is true, let us hope it does not become public knowledge."

C. But a growing number of scientists are questioning the extent to which our behavior. is controlled by our culture.

D. Many people are calling for controls on cloning immedicte1y before the practice is abused.

E. The foundation was, of course, his theory of evolution.

F. Nowhere is this more obvious than our innate ability to learn languages.

Part B

Directions: Read the text, match the items (61-65) to one of the statements (A to G) given below. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.

Read the texts from a magazine article in which five persons talked about their attitude to helping the people in developing countries. For question 61 to 65, match the name of each person (61 to 65) to one of the statements given below, which is the summary of his or her speech. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.

Judith Rodgers:

I was shocked. Last week my lecturer advised me to change a more suitable course. He said that a career in law was unsuitable for women. At first I thought he was joking, it was a stupid thing to say. Women are as intelligent as men. There are some excellent women lawyers. If he doesn't like teaching me, he should change his job. I have a right to study law. I will certainly have my career as a lawyer in the future. I don't think any male prejudice can stop me.

Peter Mitchell:

She's wasting her time studying law. When she gets married and has children she'll be too busy to work. I do believe that an intelligent woman can succeed in any career if she has enough strength to overcome male prejudice. But she has to decide first whether or not she wants to have children. It's impossible to have a successful career and to be a good mother at the same time. That's why all the professions are dominated by men. Women sometimes can't decide things properly, because they are too emotional.

Doris Newman:

What's the role of women in society today? First, as toys for men to play with — naive and charming. Second, as unpaid servants of the despotic husband — hard working and obedient. Third, as factories for producing children. This is kept throughout society, from nursery to university, from sports to politics. Nowhere are women given the same status as men. Nowhere are they allowed to think. How can we fight this discrimination? First by refusing to be played with. Second by refusing to be enslaved by marriage. Third, by refusing to have children. Finally, we must use political force to get equality of opportunity in employment and education. Women must regain their self-respect.

Muriel Green:

I really enjoy being a wife and a mother. I have two lovely little kids and I have a good husband who works hard to pay for everything we need. When he comes home after work he's tired and he has a right to expect the house to be clean and the dinner to be ready. I couldn't do his work and he certainly couldn't do mine. We are both happy with our work. My mother was a good mother and a good wife too. She taught me how to cook and how to sew. God creates men and women, who are different in many ways. Our place is at home. God makes women to be mothers and wives. Women's Liberation should stop interfering.

Martin Kent:

Until I find a job that pays me more money than my wife's getting now, I will do all the housework. Some men might laugh at me, but I don't mind. I am quite happy with this arrangement. They say that housework is a woman's job. That's stupid. If a woman has a skill and get a good salary, why shouldn't she work? My wife is a beautician and she loves her work. I take care of our two kids, drive them to school, prepare dinner for the family and do all the household choirs. I get plenty time to play with my kids in the open, go fishing, hunting and boating. I think this is important for their growth. Of course I also get plenty time for my own hobbies, too. I see no points in keeping my wife at home while I can do most of the repairing that she can't. By doing so, we actually save quite a lot of money. I don't understand those who think that only women can do housework. Men always do their own housework when they are single.

Now match each of the persons (61 to 65) to the appropriate statement.

Note: there are two extra statements.
