The West begun to take more notice of the East. The fifth volume of an enormous work r
e-assessing the Chinese contribution to science and technology is to be published next year. The first volume, which was published twenty years ago, set the tone for the whole work. In it, evidence was given to show that many inventions which, until then, western historians had claimed for Europe, were made first in. The attempt to rewrite the intellectual history of the world was not received without protest by some reputable historians. In the four volumes published so far no attempt has been made to explain why China has not kept up with the West in science and technology in modern times. It is probable that the answer isto be found in the social and economic history of, where a static society under a relatively benevolent regime of scholar-gentry contrasts with the potentially revolutionary and dynamic society of the West at the end of the Middle Ages. _____________. That was five years ago and he has no regrets about his new directi
on. “My previous work didn’t have an artistic element to it, whereas this is exciting and creative,” he says. “I really enjoy the design side.”

[A]Graham has become increasingly busy, supplying flat-packed weathervanes to clients worldwide.

[B]Graham decided to concentrate his efforts on a weathervane business. He had served an apprenticeship as a precision engineer and had worked in that trade for 15 years when he and his wife, Liz, agreed to swap roles—she went out to work as an architectural assistant and he stayed at home to look after the children and build up the business.

[C]Last month, a local school was opened with his galleon ship weathervane hoisted above it.

[D]“For centuries, weathervanes have kept communities in touch with the elements, signaling those shifts in wind direction that bring about changes in the weather,” he explains.

[E]Graham has no plans for expansion, as he wants to keep the business as a rural craft.

[F]Graham has now perfected over 100 original designs. He works to very fine detail, always seeking approval for the design of the silhouette from the customer before proceeding with the hand-cutting.

第5题

If we were asked exactly what we were doing a year ago, we should probably have to say tha
t we could not remember. But if we had kept a book and had written on it an aceount(记录) of what we did each day, we should be able to give an answer to the question.

It is the same in history. Many things have been forgotten because we do not have any written account of them. Sometimes people did keep a record of the most important happenings in their country, but often it was destroyed by fire or in a war. Sometimes there was never written record at all because the people of that time and place did not know how to write. For example, we know a good deal about the people who lived in China 4000 years ago, because they could write and leave written records for those who lived after them. But we know almost nothing about the people who lived even 200 years ago in central Africa, because they had not learned to write.

Sometimes, of course, even if the people can not write, they may know something of the past. For most people can tell proudly what their fathers did in the past. This we may call "remembered history". Some of it has now been written down. It is not so exact or so valuable to us as written history is, because words are much more easily changed when used again and again in speech than when copied in writing. But where there are no written re- cords, such spoken stories are often very helpful.

Which of the following ideas is not mentioned in the passage?

A.Remembered history, compared with written history, is less reliable.

B.Written records of the past play a most important role in our learning of the human history.

C.A written account of our daily. activities helps us to be able to answer any questions.

D.Where there are no written records, there is no history.

Almost all of us grew up eating meat, going to zoos, and perhaps wearing leathers. Many

of us bought our beloved “pets”at pet shops or kept beautiful birds in cages. We never considered the impact of these actions on the animals involved.

People often ask if animals should have rights, and quite simply, the answer is “Yes!” Supporters of animal rights believe that animals have a value completely separate from their usefulness to humans. We believe that every creature with a will to live has a right to live free from pain and suffering.Animal rights is not just a philosophy-it is a social movement that challenges society’s traditional views that all animals exist solely for human use.
