Low-carbon hydrogen is a promising alternative to fossil fuels in industrial applications,such as steel-making.However, efforts to make the gas by using renewable electricity and electrolyzers (电解槽) to split water into its hydrogen and oxygen atoms, face a problem.Many parts of the world with the most solar power potential to do this don't have enough water.This mismatch led Gang Kevin Li at the University of Melbourme, Australia, and his colleagues to develop a device that can absorb water from the thin air and use electrolysis to make high-purity hydrogen, powered by solar panels, or a wind turbine.The team’s device was able to gather water even down to a humidity(湿度)of 4 percent - the humidity in places like the Sahel Desert is often about 20 percent.This could make hydrogen production workable in places such as central Australia and the Middle East. The approach would be complementary(互补的)to existing production methods,including making hydrogen from fossil fuels, rather than acting in competition with them.The team tested its real-world potential by stringing five electrolyzers together and placing them outside, where they were powered by a solar panel. The setup was able to produce an average of 745 liters of hydrogen per square meter per day. That's about half the amount a conventional, water-fed electrolyzer would produce under similar environmental conditions. Simon Bennett from the International Energy Agency said that it was not bad for a device that runs on humidity.A major issue facing hydrogen fuel is the fact that the equipment to distribute is quite different from that used for today's fossil fuels, often requiring high pressure and even refrigerated storage.
