As a medium of exchange, money permits the separation of exchange into the two distinct ac
ts of buying and selling. Hence producers who know they will be paid in money, can concentrate on finding the most suitable outlet for their goods, while buyers who will pay in money, can concentrate on finding the cheapest market for the wings they wish to purchase.

Specialization is encouraged, because people whose output is not a complete product but only a part of one can be paid an amount equivalent to their share of the product.

Another advantage of money is that it is a measure of value. In a barter economy it would be necessary to determine how many plates were worth one hundred weight of cotton, or how many pens should be exchanged for a ton of coal.

The process of establishing relative values would have to be undertaken for every act of exchange, according to what products were being offered against one another, and according to the two parties’ desires and preferences.

Thirdly, money acts as store of wealth. It is difficult to imagine saving under a barter system. No one engaged on only one stage in the manufacture of a product could save part of his output, since he would be producing nothing complete. Most products deteriorate fairly rapidly, either physically or in value, as a result of long storage; even if storage were possible, the practice of storing products for years on end would involve obvious disadvantages. If wealth could not be saved, or only with great difficulty, future needs could not be provided.

Using money as a medium of exchange means that_____.

A.you have to sell something in order to buy something

B.you have to buy something in order to sell something

C.you don’t have to buy something in order to sell something

D.the seller and the purchaser are the same person

Specialization is encouraged because_______.A.people can use their money to buy whatever they want

B.people get paid according to their share of the product.

C.people pay great attention to the manufacture of a product

D.people cannot use their money to buy whatever they want

A barter economy is one in which _______.A.value is decided by weight

B.value is decided by number

C.money is used and goods are not exchanged

D.goods are exchanged and money is not used

If one had to save products instead of money, __________.A.this would need years of practice

B.coal, for example, would lose its value

C.they could not be stored for years on end

D.many products would lose their value

How many advantages of money are mentioned in this passage?A.Two

B.Three

C.Four

D.Five

Another kind of distinction that can be made among works of art is whether they were origi
nally intended as objects purely to be looked at, or as objects to be used. The fine arts, such as drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture, involve the production of works to be seen and experienced primarily on an abstract rather than practical level. Pieces of fine art may evoke emotional, intellectual, sensual, or spiritual responses in us. Those who love the fine arts feel that these responses are very valuable, and perhaps especially so in the midst of a highly materialistic world, for they expand our awareness of the great richness of life itself. The nineteenth century sculptor Auguste Rodin, whose work The Gates of Hell offered a passionate challenge to artists—and to those who are touched by their works: "The main thing is to be moved, to love, to hope, to tremble, to live."

In contrast to the nonfunctional appeals of the fine arts, the first purpose of the applied arts is to serve some useful function. Lucy Lewis, a traditional potter from Acoma Pueblo in New Mexico, has applied a visually exciting surface decoration to her water jar, using the chewed end of a yucca spine to paint the fine lines. But the jar's main reason for being "however" is to hold water. Some of the people of Acoma, which may be the oldest continually inhabited city in the United States, still follow the old ways, carrying water for drinking, cooking, and washing up to their adobe homes from natural rock cisterns on the cliff walls below. The forms of their water jars are therefore designed to prevent spilling and to balance readily on one's head. The pots must also be light in weight, so Acoma water jars are some of the world' s thinnest-walled pottery. Interestingly, the languages of most Native American peoples do not include a word that means "fine art." While they have traditionally created pottery, basketry, and weaving with a highly sophisticated sense of design, these pieces were part of their everyday lives.

The applied art of pottery-making, or ceramics, is one of the crafts, the making of useful objects by hand. Other applied art disciplines are similarly functional. Graphic designers create advertisements, fabrics, layouts for books and magazines, logos for corporate identification, and so on; industrial designers shape the mass-produced objects used by high-tech societies, from cars, telephones, and teapots, to one of the most famous visual images in the world: the Coca- Cola bottle. Other applied arts include clothing design, interior design, and environmental design.

The water jar mentioned in the second paragraph can NOT be described as ______.

A.light in weight

B.made by a Native American

C.an example of fine art

D.an object to be used

Nobody’s Watching Me

I am a foot taller than Napoleon and twice the weight of Twiggy; on my only visit to a beautician, the woman said she found my face a challenge. Yet despite these social disadvantages I feel cheerful, happy, confident and secure.

I work for a daily newspaper and so get to a lot of places I would otherwise never see. This year I went to Ascot to write about the people there. I saw something there that made me realize the stupidity of trying to conform, of trying to be better than anyone else. There was a small, plump woman, all dressed up—huge hat, dress with pink butterflies, long white gloves. She also had a shooting stick. But because she was so plump, when she sat on the stick it went deep into the ground and she couldn't pull it out. She tugged and tugged, tears of rage in her eyes. When the final tug brought it out, she crashed with it to the ground."

I saw her walk away. Her day had been ruined. She had made a fool of herself in public--she had impressed nobody. In her own sad, red eyes she was a failure.

I remember well when I was like that, in the days before I learned that nobody really cared what you do . . .

I remember the pain of my first dance, something that is always meant to be a wonderful occasion for a girl... There was a fashion then for diamante (人造钻石) ear-rings, and I wore them so often practicing for the big night that I got two great sores on my ears and had to put sticking-plaster on them. Perhaps it was this that made nobody want to dance with me. Whatever it was, there I sat for four hours and 43 minutes. When I came home, I told my parents that I had a marvelous time and that my feet were sore from dancing. They were pleased at my success and they went to bed happily, but I went to my room and tore the bits of sticking-plaster off my ears and felt forlorn and disconsolate.

‘The beautician found the writer's face a challenge’, which means _________.

A.she thought it was a challenge to have such a face repaired

B.she thought it was a challenge to deal with such a face

C.the writer's face challenged the beautician's

D.it was a challenge to find the writer's face

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage

Among all the animals, the ape is most like human beings. Both people and apes have the similar brain structure, the similar nerve system, and the similar kind of blood.

There are four kinds of apes: the chimpanzee(黑猩猩), the orangutan(猩猩), the gorilla(大猩猩), and the gibbon(长臂猿). They live in the deep forests and warm tropical regions of Africa and of Southeast Asia, including Indonesia.

All apes are covered with brown, reddish-brown, or black hair everywhere on their bodies except their faces, feet, and hands. Their hands each have four fingers and a thumb that helps them grip things the way our thumbs help us. But they also have a thumb on each foot instead of a big toe. Thus they can hold things with their feet also. Having short, weak legs, apes do not walk on the ground very much. However, their arms are very strong. This enables them to swing from branches and travel very quickly from tree to tree.

These animals live in small family groups that move from place to place in search of vegetables and fruits. They also eat eggs, small animals, nuts, and insects. When they are tired, they build nests in the trees. But they rarely sleep there for more than a night or two. Then they move on to look for more food.

There are some differences among the following three kids of apes. The gibbon is never more than three feet high and weight only about fourteen pounds. The gorilla grows to be six feet tall and weight up to 600 pounds. The orangutan is smaller than the gorilla. It stands three to five feet tall and weight up to 200 pounds.

Chimpanzees are the smartest of all apes. They can be taught to sit at a table and eat, to dress themselves, and to do things that human children can do.

11. What does the first paragraph tell us?

[A] The ape looks like human beings most.

[B] People and the ape think alike.

[C] People and the ape behave alike.

[D] The ape is the most intellectual animal in the world.

12. Which of the following sentences is TRUE?

[A] All apes are brown or black.

[B] All parts of apes' bodies are covered with hair.

[C] Apes have weak legs but very strong arms.

[D] Apes' arms are strong enough to swim.

13. Apes build nests in the trees but seldom sleep there for more than a night or two because ________.

[A] They like to live in small family groups

[B] They like to move from place to place in search of more food

[C] They like to eat eggs, small animals, nuts and insects

[D] it rains too often in the deep forests

14. Among the three kinds of apes, ________.

[A] the gorilla is the biggest

[B] the gibbon is only three feet high but it is heavier than the orangutan

[C] the orangutan is smaller than the gorilla and cleverer than the gibbon

[D] the orangutan can stand up to a great height, but others cannot

15. The last paragraph tells us that ________.

[A] chimpanzees can do better than human children

[B] chimpanzees can do many things that human children cannot do

[C] human children can do many things that chimpanzees cannot do

[D] the intelligence of chimpanzees is similar to that of human children

When we meet another person for the first time, we are actually flooded with new informati
on. Almost at once, we notice his appearance, style. of dress, and monner of speech. Furthermore, as we listen to what he has to say and observe the things he does, we begin to form. some ideas of what kind of person hisand what he intends to do. As you know from your own experience, though, we do not only gather these separate pieces of information. Instead, we go further and combine them into a unified picture. In short, we form. an overall im pression of each person we meet-an impression that can be favorable or unfavorable. But how precisely do we perform. this task? How do we combine so much different information into a clear first impression with such quick speed? A great deal of research has been performed on this question, and resulits point to the following answer: We perform. this task through a special type of averaging.

Expressed very simply our impressions of others seem to represent a weighted average of all information that can be gathered about them. That is, they reflect a process in which all information we have about others is averaged to gether—but with some facts, or input receiving greater sense. For example, in forming an impression of a new boss you would probably be influedced to a much greater degree by how this person gives you orders (whether respectfully or not ) than by the color of his or her eyes. The fact that not all information about other persons affects our impressions of them to the same degree, raises an important question: Just what kinds of input receive the greatest weight? Again research provides some revealing(发人深思) an-swers.

This passage is mainly about_______.

A.how our first impressions are expressed

B.how our first impressions are formed

C.how we can favorably impress others

D.how first impression affect our lives

Research has shown that first impressions are generally more influenced by______.A.the way others spesk

D.certain types of information at hand

The word “weight”in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to_______.A.amount

B.research

C.importance

D.burden

The following paragraph will most probably siscuss______.A.wrong first impression of other people

B.selected information for forming first impression

C.the importance of first impression in job situation

D.ways of making good first impression

According to the passage, the first impression is_______.A.the result of quick look

B.not based on enough information

C.a combination of pieces of information

第11题

In many stories on TV and in science-fiction books, men travel to faraway stars. They have quick, easy journeys. But so far, men have been able to reach only the earth’s own moon.

Suppose a man wanted to reach a distant star. Even if he traveled his whole life, he would have to move faster than the speed of the light. Nothing can move that fast except light itself.

Strange things happen to an object when it moves rapidly. The object weighs more. An object moving at 86 percent of the speed of light is twice as heavy as it is at rest. A stick appears shorter. A clock runs more slowly. A man would not age so fast as he would on the earth.

Light travels more than 186,000 miles a second, or about 11 million miles a minute. In one year, light travels six trillion miles. That great distance is called a light-year. It is used to measure distance in space.

The star closest to our sun is Alpha Centauri. It is more than four light-years away. If one traveled at the speed of light, he could make a round trip to Alpha Centauri in nine years. But, even at that speed, he could not reach Alcaid (北斗星) in the handle of the Big Dipper. A one-way journey to Alcaid would take almost 200 years

1.In this passage the words “closest to our sun” means the star().

A、the earth we live on

B、Alpha Centauri

C、the Big Dipper

D、the moon

2.A one-way journey to Alcaid would take().

A、about nine years

B、less than four years

C、almost 200 years

D、less than 100 years

3.Why do we measure the distance in light-years instead of miles?()

A、Units of light-years sound better.

B、Using light- years reduced the number of figures used.

C、We used to measure distance in light-years long ago.

D、We do not make mistakes when we use light-years.

4.If a stone moved at the speed of light, it().

A、would weigh twice more than it is motionless

B、would weigh as much as it is on earth

C、would weigh less than it is on earth

D、would not have weight at all

5.This story is mainly about ().

A、the distance between the sun and the other stars

B、the problems of traveling to faraway stars

C、what happens when we travel faster than the speed of light

D、the tool we use when we go to faraway stars
