The previous section has shown how quickly a rhyme passes

from one school child to the next and illustrates the further difference 【B1】 ______

between school lore and nursery lore. In nursery lore a verse, learnt

in early childhood, is not usually passed on again when the little listener 【B2】 ______

has grown up, and has children of their own, or even grandchildren. 【B3】 ______

The period between learning a nursery rhyme and transmitting

it may be something from 20 to 70 years. With the playground 【B4】 ______

lore, therefore, a rhyme may be excitedly passed on within the very hour 【B5】 ______

it is learnt; and, in the general, it passes between children of the 【B6】 ______

same age, or nearly so, since it is uncommon for the difference in age

between playmates to be more than five years. If, therefore, a playground

rhyme can be shown to have been currently for a hundred years, or 【B7】 ______

even just for fifty, it follows that it has been retransmitted over

and over, very possibly it has passed along a chain of two or three 【B8】 ______

All the useful energy at the surface of the earth comes from the activity of the sun. The
sun heats and feeds creatures and mankind. Each year it provides men with two hundred million tons of grain and nearly ten million tons of wood.

Coal, oil, natural gas, and all other fuels are stored energy from the sun. Some was collected by this season's plants as carbon compounds. Some was stored by plants and trees ages ago. Even waterpower derives from the sun. Water turned into vapor by the sun falls as rain. It courses down the mountains and is converted to electric power. Light transmits only the energy that comes from the sun's outer layer, and much of this energy that is directed towards the earth never arrives. About nine tenths of it is absorbed by the atmosphere of the earth. In fact, the earth itself gets only one half millionth of the sun's entire output of radiant energy.

The sun is the source of all of the following EXCEPT______.

A.gasoline

B.natural gas

C.atomic power

D.animal fat

Early in November 1965, New York was blacked out by an electricity failure (停电). The Mayor promised that it would not happen again. Pessimists (悲观主义者) were certain that it would happen again within five years. In July 1977, there was a repeat performance which produced a serious disorder throughout the city. At that time the city was in one of its worst heat waves.

In 1965, there was little crime during the darkness, and fewer than a hundred people were arrested. In 1977, hundreds of stores were broken into and looted (劫掠). Nearly 4,000 people were arrested but far more disappeared into the darkness of the night. The number of policeman available was far from enough and some looters even carry guns.

Hospitals had to treat hundreds of people cut by glass from shop windows. Banks and most business remained closed the next day. The blackout started at 9:30 P.M., when lightning hit and knocked out supply cables. Many stores were thus caught by surprise. For twenty-four hours, New York realized how helpless it was without electricity.

According to the first paragraph, who were right: the authorities or the pessimists?

A.The authorities.

B.The pessimists.

C.Both.

D.Neither.

第10题

There are different ways in which people try to deal with the problem of energy. One way is the greater production of common energy sources, such as coal, oil and gas. The trouble with these sources, however, is that they are not renewable.

Another way is energy conservation ( 节能 ), which means using energy more efficiently ( 有效地 ). In some very cold countries people build special houses to save energy. They place materials between the inside and the outside of the walls of the house to keep the cold out and the warmth in. The house is heated by the lights, the body heat of the people and the other equipment in it.

Finally, renewable energy sources are used even though they are often expensive to develop. One form of these is geothermal energy. In certain parts of the world the temperature of the earth increases thirty degrees centigrade with each kilometer down. At six kilometers, therefore, it rises to nearly two hundred degrees. To get the heat, water is pumped (压轴 ) down into the rocks and back up to the surface. Heat from the earth is already used in certain countries.

1.At a place where the surface temperature is 15℃, how deep do you have to dig so as to get a temperature of 75℃ ?()

A、One km.

B、Two km.

C、Three km.

D、Four km.

2.From the text we learn that coal().

A、is quite easy to produce

B、is not used most efficiently

C、is the most common source of energy

D、could be renewed only by new technology

3.The writer tells about the "special houses" because they().

A、show the excellent skills of the builders

B、serve as an example of energy conservation

C、are heated by different sources of energy

D、are warmer than other types of houses

4.How many ways of dealing with the energy problem are discussed in the text?()

A、Two.

B、Three.

C、Four.

D、Five.

5.The underlined words "geothermal energy" in the third paragraph mean().

A、renewable source

B、underground source

C、heat inside the earth

D、temperature of the earth
