第1题

If you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season to season. You are proba
bly a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of the year. A famous scientist concluded that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities, and that cool weather is much more favourable for creative thinking than in summer heat. This does not mean all people are less intelligent in the summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large members of people tend to be lowest in the summer.

Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man's mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature. Autumn is the next best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking.

Generally speaking, it is far fitter for creative thinking when the weather is ______ .

A.sunny and fine

B.windy and rainy

C.warm and wet

D.neither cold nor hot

Superstition (迷信) has always been part of human nature and has existed in every society.

Superstition (迷信) has always been part of human nature and has existed in every society. There are superstitions about numbers, animals, food, the weather, the sky, illness, work, sleep and parts of the body. In fact, superstitions have been part of every aspect of human existence. In the past, people had no scientific explanations for events such as birth, death, thunderstorms and changes in the weather, They thought that these events were caused by spirits, and they developed ways to welcome the good spirits and chase away the evil spirits. They hoped that by wearing special clothes, eating special foods or performing certain rituals (仪式), the spirits would be happy and would not harm them.

Some superstitions have a practical origin. When you spill salt, do you throw a pinch of it over your left shoulder? Today we understand many of the chemical properties that make salt valuable, such as its ability to melt snow and to freeze ice cream. In the past, salt was thought to have magical powers. People probably realized the value of salt when they saw animals near a salt lick. They soon discovered that salt could be used to preserve food, and probably thought that it could protect people as well.

In modern times, although we have scientific explanations for many things, life still holds many uncertainties and fears. There are still things that we can not control, such as birth and death. Even the weather can be a source of anxiety. When we plan an outdoor party, for example, we hope that it does not rain. We try to be in control of various situations by making wishes, wearing lucky charms or reading our horoscopes (星位) to see what we should do. So, keep your fingers crossed and knock on wood. Good luck!

Superstitious activities can be observed in ______.

A.nature

B.the weather

C.animal behavior

D.human society

What is happening in our weather? Of course we have never been able to predict exactly w
What is happening in our weather? Of course we have never been able to predict exactly what the weather will be like, but now strange weather patterns are seriously affecting many parts of the world. For example, droughts (旱灾) in Mexico and Brazil have recently caused great crop losses and in the United States they have even had to make their own snow for the Winter Olympics!

Scientists have found that the cause of this strange weather is that the air circulation pattern has changed and is now more variable than earlier in the twentieth century. This means that different regions of the world get long spells (持续时间) of the same type of weather, whether hot , cold, wet or windy.

However, weather experts have different views about why this has happened. One theory is that the temperature of the sea has increased. Another is that man’s activities on earth have disturbed the balance of nature.

Whatever the cause, the economics of many countries in the world depend upon the weather. And until we know exactly what effect man’s activities are having on the weather, we cannot make changes which might help. So for the moment the only answer is …wait and see!

My wife and I spent two weeks in London last year. We went there in autumn. We think
it is the best season to visit England. The weather is usually quite pleasant and there aren't too many tourists in October.

We stayed in a small hotel in the West End. It was convenient as we did most of our sight seeing on foot. Taxis were too expensive; the bus routes were too difficult for us to understand; and my wife didn't like traveling by underground. She said it made her feel shut in.

We went to look at the places, which all tourists see. We saw Buckingham Palace, the National Gallery and Piccadilly Circus. We went shopping in Oxford Street and spent too much money. What we liked most, though, was going to the theatre. We don't have the chance to see such wonderful plays at home. A lot of people say English food is very bad. We didn't think so. It's true that most of the restaurants are French or Italian or Chinese, but we had some very good meals.

In fact, we enjoyed our holiday so much that we have booked another trip to England for this year. We're going to take our umbrellas, though. I'm sure we'll need them.
