My kids take a lot of pride in being ahead of their friends in their best subjects. With
children who have learning disabilities, however, it is easy to underestimate (低估) their abilities, simply because it can be so difficult for them to show what they know.My son recently does a good job at the public school for his learning disabilities, and I was shocked to realize how excellent he was in many of his subjects.Because he couldn't give me good written answers to the questions, I hadn't realized how much he knew.I took away the sixth grade history book he and his sister were using and gave them both high school books, with the expectation that we would move up to college books next year if they did well.

Reading is their strongest subject, but I had not realized they had college reading abilities until they were tested. Both children enjoy history more, and my son likes to carry his history book to the grade school, where he attends part time. When his classmates do their grade school history, he pulls out his high school book and works independently from it.Surprisingly, this has also increased his ability to fit into his public school class. He was the youngest child in his class, has some disabilities, including speech disorders, and hadn't been in public school since first grade. He had complained that the public school class he had longed to try was boring, but after I increased his challenges at home, he seemed to adapt better at public school as well, choosing to participate more in the group activities, and making new friends.

Almost every child, on the first day he sets foot in a school building, is smarter,

more curious, less afraid of what he doesn’t know, better at finding and 27 , more

confident, resourceful (机敏的), persistent and 28 than he will ever be again in

his schooling – or, unless he is very unusual and very lucky, for the rest of his life.

Already, by paying close attention to and 29 the world and people around him, and

without any school-type formal instruction, he has done a task far more difficult,

complicated and 30 than anything he will be asked to do in school, or than any of his

teachers has done for years. He has solved the 31 of language. He has discovered it

– babies don’t even know that language exists – and he has found out how it works and

learned to use it 32 . He has done it by exploring, by experimenting, by developing

his own model of the grammar of language, by 33 and seeing whether it works, by

gradually changing it and 34 it until it does work. And while he has been doing this,

he has been learning other things as well, including many of the “ 35 ” that the

schools think only they can teach him, and many that are more complicated than the ones

they do try to teach him.

There are many different cultures in the world, and in each of them the children must le
arn a great many things that are expected of everyone who participates effectively in that culture. These things are taken for granted by everyone who shares the culture. Indeed, the children begin to learn them before their linguistic skills(语言技巧)are far enough developed to understand a verbal description for what they are learning. This kind of learning has sometimes been called “imitation”, but that is too simple an explanation for the complex processes that go on when a child learns what is normal and expected in his own community. Most of the rules are communicated to the child non-verbally, and he adapts to them as if no other possibilities existed. They are much a part of him as his own body; he would no more question them than he would question the fact that he has two hands and has two legs and two feet, but only one head.

(1)Children have to learn a large number of things which ______ in their culture,

A.are difficult for them to lean

B.are regarded as especially important for them

C.are regarded as normal by everyone

D.are good for them to learn

(2)Children begin to learn things by _______.

A.using their linguistic skill

B.understanding what they are learning

C.communicating effectively

D.imitating what others are doing

(3)The learning processes for the children are ________.

A.complex

B.simple

C.normal

D.skilful

(4)Children accept the communication rules_______.

A.thoughtfully

B.unconsciously

C.cautiously

D.choosingly

(5)Which of the following statement is correct?

A.Children always ask why they have two hands

B.Children learn all that they are expected through imitations

C.Children learn things faster than adults

D.Children adapt to the communication rules naturally

Learning English for 2008 Beijing Olympics

Yang Zhenhua has been a taxi driver for years. He knows every corner of the city. His work usually wins him thanks except when he meets foreigners, for Yang doesn't know any English.

"Now I study English in my free time," said Yang in his 40s. He pulls an English textbook from the toolbox. "I study English to help with Beijing Olympics," he said proudly. Yang is just one of the millions of common people in Beijing who started to learn English when Beijing became the host city of the 2008 Olympic Games. Learning and speaking is hot among the people of this 3,000-year-old city. From schools to factories, men and women, old and young are studying their "ABC". Books teaching useful expressions for everyday communication(交际) are the most popular.

Some people, such as taxi drivers, bus conductors and the policemen, are asked to learn basic English. Nearly 3,000 students from 50 universities in Beijing went to the streets last August as volunteers to teach English to the people of this city. They taught common and useful sentences, such as greetings and asking and answering simple questions. Official figures show that about 15% of Beijing citizens can speak English. It is said that it will rise to 70% or 80% during the following years. Besides, the government encourages the use of English in many places. The city underground railways give messages by radio in both English and Chinese. English, not Chinese, is used as the most important working language for the Olympic Committee(委员会). 第10题

Many people hope that the whole world will one day speak a common language. Over the Years
, people have made up new languages with this aim. At least six hundred languages have been developed in the search for a language which all human beings would be able to speak. The most famous one, Esperanto (世界语) , was the idea of Ludwig Zamenhof, a doctor in Warsaw. He published a book about his new language in To encourage people to learn the Language, he made it as simple as possible. Esperanto has never been accepted as an official world language, but it has been suggested as an auxiliary language.

By 1950 it had been taught to one and a half million speakers, and it was spoken in six hundred schools. Today Esperanto is spoken by about eight million people, and more than one hundred newspapers and magazines in the language are published regularly throughout the world. Thousands of books have been written in Esperanto, including those translated from other languages.

Today the need for a new auxiliary language like Esperanto seems less obvious. Throughout this century English has grown more and more important. It has become a second language for many millions of people. The fact that more are learning English shows that the use of English is still growing worldwide. No one would deny the usefulness of world language, but not many people think that Esperanto is likely to play such a role.

Over the years, people have made up new languages in the hope that ______.

A.all people will be able to speak a common language

B.people will learn a foreign language better

C.people can understand each other better

D.people will be able to speak several languages

Zamenhof made the language as simple as possible because ______.A.he wanted people to learn it quickly

B.he hoped more and more people would be willing to learn it

C.he wanted everyone to speak it without any difficulty

D.he hoped it would be accepted as an official world language

Which of the following is NOT true of English?A.It is widely taught in schools.

B.It has become a second language for many millions of people.

C.Many books have been written in English.

D.It is less popular than Esperanto.

What is the best title of the passage?A.The language made by one man.

B.A talk about the world language.

C.English as a second language for everyone.

D.Esperanto—a better language than English.
