Why does a commuter(持火车月票的乘客) always look as if he has just been through a war? Here is a story of a commuter.

Mr. Green gets up very early every day and eats a quick breakfast. Then he makes his wife drive him to the station. He arrives on time, but his train doesn't. When it finally comes, he squeezes on and finds there are no more seats. He has to stand with his bag between his knees. There is simply no room to put it down. Suddenly a cold wind hits him in the face. The window is broken! He remembers this summer. At that lime the same window didn't even open.

The conductor makes his way through the crowd and asks for the commuter's ticket. The ticket, of course, is buried deep in the poor man's breast pocket. He digs for it. The conductor waits impatiently.

Finally the train reaches the city. Mr. Green is already worn out. He says to himself, "My God, I feel as if I've been through a war!"

If Mr. Green had got up several minutes later, he ______.

A.would have missed the train

B.might still have been able to catch the train

C.wouldn't be sad

D.would have been away from a war

There was once an ant that was very thirsty. It ran here and there looking for some water

There was once an ant that was very thirsty.

It ran here and there looking for some water but could not find any.

Then suddenly, when the ant was almost ready to die of thirst, a large drop of water fell on it.

The ant drank the water, which saved its life.

The water was actually a tear from a young girl who was crying. Because of her sadness, the tear had magical qualities and suddenly the ant could speak the language of human beings.

The ant looked up and saw the young girl sitting in front of a huge pile of seeds.

“Why are you sad?” asked the ant.

“I’m the prisoner of a giant.” the girl told the ant. “ He won’t let me go until I’ve made three separate heaps of grain, barley(大麦)and rye(黑麦)out of this huge pile of seeds in which they are all mixed together.”

“That will take you a month!” the ant said, looking at the huge pile of seeds.

“I know,” the girl cried, “and if I haven’t finished by tomorrow, the giant will eat me for his supper!”

“Don’t cry,” the ant said, “my friends and I will help you.”

Soon thousands of ants were at work, separating the three kinds of seeds.

The next morning, when the giant saw that the work had been done, he let the girl go.

Thus it was one of her tears that saved her life.

Go for It! While watching the Olympics the other night, I came across quite a sight. It wa
s not a world record broken, but a show of determination. The event was swimming and started with only three men on the blocks. For one reason or another, two of them false started so they were disqualified(取消资格). That left only one to compete. It would have been difficult enough, not having anyone to race against, even though the time on the clock is what's important. I watched the man dive off the block and knew right away that he was not out for gold. His arms were flailing(乱摆)in an attempt at freestyle. Clearly this man was not a medal competitor. I listened to the crowd begin to laugh at this poor man who was clearly having a hard time. Finally be made his turn to start back. You could tell he was tired out. But in those few difficult strokes(划动), the crowd had changed. No longer were they laughing, but beginning to cheer. Some even began to stand and shouted things like, "Come on, you can do it!" and "Go for it!" He did. When this young man finally finished his race, the crowd went wild. You would have thought that he had won the gold, and he should have. Even though he recorded one of the slowest times in Olympic history, this man did his best. Just a short year ago, he had never even swum, let alone raced. His country had been asked to Sydney as a polite gesture.
