There are lots of reasons for buying a new mattress(床垫): getting married, moving to a new home or simply the desire for more sleeping space. No matter what the reason, the ultimate expectation is a good, restful night's sleep.

But with all the different constructions, firmness, sizes and prices for sleep sets, how do you decide which one is right for you? The makers suggest you treat bedding as a long-term investment. This means carefully considering the quality and comfort you are getting for your money.

If you've decided to buy a new mattress, invest in the very best you can afford. Prices are determined by the material used, the quality of construction and the size of the set. It's an investment in one-third of everyday of your life and that can have a dramatic effect on how you feel the other two-thirds.

Earle Dickson worked for a company manufacturing gauze and tape called Johnson &
Johnson. We will never know the reason, but it is a fact that his wife, Josephine Dickson, always had some minor accidents. During the first week of their marriage, she hurt herself twice with the kitchen knife. After that, it just went from bad to worse. It seemed that Josephine was always cutting herself. One day Earle Dickson had an idea. He sat down with some tape and gauze and a pair of scissors. Then he cut the tape into strips. In the middle of each strip he stuck a little square of gauze. From then on, whenever Josephine had an accident, ready-made bandages were on hand for her to use quickly and without a lot of fuss. At Johnson & Johnson, people heard about these new bandages which could be put on in thirty seconds. Soon the company started to try these bandages on the market. People have been talking about health for a long time because people know the importance of it. People's understanding of health also becomes deeper with the progress in scientific research. Recently the term "health" has come to have a wider meaning than it used to. It no longer means just the absence of illness. Today, health means the well-being of your body, your mind and your relationship with other people. This new concept of health is closely related to another term-quality of life. Quality of life is the degree of overall satisfaction that a person gets from life.

Why has the emphasis of health shifted from the absence of disease to a broader focus on the quality of a person's life? One reason for this has to do with the length and conditions of life that people can now expect. Medical advances have made it possible for people today to live longer, healthier lives. Some people would say that the Englishman's home is no longer his castle; that it has beco
me his workshop. This is partly because the average Englishman is keen on working with his hands and partly because he feels, for one reason or another, that he must do for himself many household jobs for which, some years ago, he would have hired professional help. The main reason for this is a financial one. the high cost of labor has meant that builders' and decorators' costs have reached a level which makes them so high that house proud English people of modest means hang back. So, if they wish to keep their houses looking bright and smart, they have to deal with some of the repairs and decorating themselves. As a result, there has grown up in the post-war years what is sometimes referred to as the "Do-It-Yourself Movement".

The "Do-It-Yourself Movement" began with home decorating but has since spread into a much wider field. Nowadays there seem to be very few things that cannot be made by the "do-it-yourself" method. A number of magazines and handbooks exist to show hopeful handymen of all ages just how easy it is to build anything from a coffee table to a fifteen foot (4.5 meters) sailing boat. All you need, it seems, is a hammer and a few nails. You follow the simple instructions step-by-step and , before you know where you are, the finished article stands before you, complete in every detail.

Unfortunately, alas, it is not always quite as simple as it sounds! Many a "do-it-yourselfer" has found to his cost that one cannot learn a skilled craftsman's job overnight. How quickly one realizes, when doing it oneself, that a job which takes the skilled man an hour or so to complete takes the amateur five or six at least. And then there is the question of tools. The first thing the amateur learns is that he must have the right tools for the job. But tools cost money. There is also the wear and tear on the nerves. It is not surprising then that many people have come to the conclusion that the expense of paying professionals to do the work is, in the long run, more economical than 'doing it oneself'.

The passage is mainly about

A.how to be a do-it-yourselfer

B.the Do-h-Yourself Movement

C.the future of the Do-It-Yourself Movement

D.the origin of the Do-It-Yourself Movement

阅读材料,回答题。

To swim across the English Channel takes at least nine hours. It’s a hard work and it makes you short of breath. To fly over the Channel takes only twenty minutes (as long as you’re not held up at the airport), but it’s an expensive way to travel. You can travel by hovercraft if you don’t mind the noise, and that takes forty minutes. Otherwise you can go by boat, if you forget your seasickness ills. All these means of transport have their problems and the weary(不耐烦的) traveler often dreams of being able to drive to France in his own car. "Not possible", you say. Well, wait a minute. People are once again considering the idea of a Channel tunnel or bridge.

This time, the Greater London Council is looking into the possibility of building a Channel link straight to London. A bridge would cost far more than a tunnel, but you would be able to goby rail or by car on a bridge, whereas a tunnel would provide a rail link only.

Why is this idea being discussed again? Is Britain becoming more conscious of the need for links with Europe as a result of joining the EEC (欧共体) ? Well, perhaps. The main reason, though, is that a tunnel or bridge would reach the twenty square kilometers of London’s disused dockland(船坞地). A link from London to the continent would stimulate trade and revitalize(使...重新有活力) the port, and would make London a main trading centre in Europe. With a link over the Channel, you could buy your fish and chips in England, and be able to eat them in France while they were still warm!

As pointed out at the beginning of the passage, people used to think that air pollution __________. 查看材料

A.caused widespread damage in the countryside

B.affected the entire eastern half of the United States

C.had damaging effect on health

D.existed merely in urban and industries areas
