Ladies and gentlemen, I’d like to report on my recent investigation of the current situa
tion of China’s automobile market. Considering the fact that there is only one car for every 250 Chinese at present, the potential auto market is extremely attractive. China has cut its average tariff rate several times and promised to continue to cut its automobile import tariff. China has virtually opened its auto market to the outside world. China is seeking partners for its automobile industry, and we should walk up and take the opportunity.(英译汉)

The Language Learning Theory course is an option during the third semester of your program
. It is an introduction to aspects of Psycholinguistics and Second Language Acquisition Research. The course will deal specifically with those aspects of recent research that are relevant to the comprehension and production of spoken language. Most of the course will, in other words, be spent considering the processes involved in understanding and producing spoken language. At each stage, we shall be relating the implications of recent research and theories to the practice of foreign language teaching. The course aims to provide relevant background for all language teachers who are interested in WHY and HOW current teaching approaches have been developed.

The course will be held during the first ten weeks of this semester from 8: 30 to 10: 30 on Tuesday mornings.

A handout giving an outline of the topics of each of the ten sessions is available for those who wish to consider the course in more detail.

The course will be principally conducted through lecture and seminar. Learners will, at times, be asked to take part in small language experiments. Handouts and worksheets will be distributed each week. Preparatory reading and follow-up reading will be required for each session.

Learners' participation in class activities will be taken into consideration. Attendance at classes is essential. There will be four short, assessed assignments during the course. Participation in classes will account for 10% of the final mark. Assignments will account for 60%. The remaining 30% is for the final test—which will be held one week after the end of the course.

You may collect the handout (covering the information I have given you today) from me at the end of this session. If you need further details, you are welcome to ask me personally or see the secretary in Room 513. The course code is LLT 96.

For the most part, rapid economic development has been a favor. But there is a down side t
o development—health problems such as overweight are all becoming more common, as more people take taxis to work instead of riding their bicycles, and other labour-saving devices become more popular.

An increasingly fast pace of life makes it difficult for people to spend time playing sports. " I know exercise is good for your health, " a young lady said, " But after a busy work week, the only thing I want to do is watching TV and going to sleep. " That attitude may explain the results of a recent nationwide study, which suggested 15 percent of urban adults in China have heart problems.

Local researchers found that 31. 2 percent of elderly respondents were getting enough exercise, but less than 9 percent of youngsters and the middle-aged got enough physical activity.

Elderly people understand the importance of protecting their health. The young people, however, are busy working and use this as an excuse to avoid exercise. In fact, physical exercise doesn't require much time, money or a special gymnasium. People can make use of any time and any place at their convenience to take part in sports. Walking quickly, cycling, climbing the stairs and dancing are all helpful methods to improve one's health.

The benefits of adding a little more activity to your life are priceless. " There is no need to be an athlete (运动员) , however, "a local doctor said. People should walk for 30 minutes a day and take part in some other physical activities three to five times a week. He warns, however, that people in poor physical shape should start slowly, and build up over time.

By referring to rapid economic development as "a favor" at the beginning of the passage, the author means that______ .

A.it has benefited the general public greatly

B.it has done harm to people's health nationwide

C.it is going faster than anyone could have imagined

D.it has helped to establish a healthy lifestyle. of the public

Americans are far more sophisticated about beverages than they were 20 years ago. Witness
the Starbucks revolution and you'll know where the trend goes. Now, spurred on by recent studied suggesting that it can cut the risk of cancer and heart disease and retard the aging process, tea is enjoying a similar jolt. Enough chic tea salons are springing up to make even diehard coffee drinkers consider switching beverages.

Tea is available in more places than ever. "Tea was one of the most prolific beverage categories in 1999," with 24 percent more products offered over the previous year, reports Tom Vierhile of Marketing Intelligence Service, which tracks food and beverage trends. And the Tea Association of the United States reports that from 1990 to 1999, annual sales of the drink grew to $ 4.6 billion from $1.8 billion. "Green tea is seen by consumers as a 'functional food' delivering health benefits beyond sustenance," says Vierhile.

Recently published studies point out that not all brews are created equal. Only teas that come from the leaves of the plant Camellia sinensis — which, in their raw state are brewed to make green tea, and, with curing, can be turned into oolong and black tea leaves — have been shown to contain health benefits. Other herbal teas and infusions may taste good, yet they do little more than warm up the drinker. But for Camellia sinensis, the evidence is powerful. In a 1998 study, Harvard University researchers found that drinking one cup of black tea a day lowered the risk of heart attack by as much as 44 percent compared with non-tea drinkers, and other studies have suggested that the antioxidants in these so-called real teas can also prevent cancer.

One such antioxidant in green tea is ECGC, a compound 20 times as powerful as vitamin E and 200 times as powerful as vitamin C. "When people ask me for something good and cheep they can do to reduce their cancer risk, I tell them drink real tea." Says Mitchell Gaynor, director of medical oncology at New York City's Strang-Cornell Cancer Prevention Centre.

Among those inspired to become a green-tea drinker is Tess Ghilaga. A new York Writer who took it up after consulting a nutritionist six years ago. "I've never been a coffee drinker." says Ghilaga, 33, "she told me to start drinking green tea for the antioxidant properties." Now Ghilaga and her husband routinely brew tea they order theirs from Inpursuitoftea.com, an internet tea company, which sells a variety of ready-made and raw teas. http://www. alitea.com/ — along with green, black, and oolong tea, this company sells a wide variety of herbal teas and offers a "Tea of the Month" club. http://www. Teasofgreen.com/ — this site sells higher-end green, black and oolong teas and has good tips on proper storage and preparation of tea. http://www. tea.com/ — tea drinkers can find links to sites offering tea lore, such as articles about tea ceremonies in foreign lands. An exhaustive "frequently asked question" file found out the site.

What do recent studies reveal about tea drinking?

A.Many tea houses have sprung up to meet the market demands.

B.Drinking tea can cut the risk of lung cancer in particular.

C.Tea is rather a magical drinking material to slow down the aging process.

D.Many die-hard coffee brewers have developed strong sentiments towards tea.
