Task 1
Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statements, numbered 36 through 40. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should make the correct choice.
Today I want to make some suggestions about taking notes from lectures. It's clearly important that you take notes efficiently; for the notes you take from lectures allow you to study for a test on those lectures, or to prepare for class discussion. Without good notes, you can feel pretty lost. But the importance of notes is not the main idea or purpose here, for their importance is obvious enough. The suggestions I want to make concern the actual taking of the notes. Now there's no great secret about taking notes. You have almost certainly taken notes from books or articles before, and very likely you've taken notes from lectures in your native language. And that brings up the first suggestion I'd like to make.
If you aren't used to taking notes in English, don't panic, don't get discouraged if you can't understand the lecturer the first time you hear him--or even for some time after that. It may take a little time, but, if you stick with it, you will understand him. A number of foreign students have told me the same experience. At first, they felt utterly lost in an American lecture hall; and then, suddenly, to their very real surprise, they discovered that they were taking notes--that they were getting what the lecturer was saying. They didn't know just when or how the process got started, but it had started. So, have faith. Others have succeeded. You can too.
A second suggestion, and a basic one, is listen. And listen actively, alertly(警觉地), aggressively(积极地). Concentrate on the speaker's words. Don't let your mind wander. Don't be distracted (分心) by a fidgeting(坐立不安) classmate, or by thoughts of what you're going to eat the next time you eat, or by a peculiar habit of the lecturer's. The fly buzzing(嗡嗡地叫) on the windowpane may be more interesting but the lecturer has something to say. Your job is to get that something. You will get it if you give him your undivided attention.

A.To explain the importance of taking notes.
B.To describe one's experience of taking notes.
C.To give advice on taking notes from lectures.
