SECRET SHOPPERS
Tim Wright knows all about making companies more efficient. Companies like to know,' says Mr Wright,' that (32) customers go into a store just a few minutes before closing time, they will (33) get good service.' Check-up (34) set up in the west of England in 1992 and (35) two years moved to London so it could offer a nationwide service. (36) the last three years, Check-up's profits have (37) dramatically as companies have come to realise (38) great importance of good customer service. From the time we were babies we have been taught our manners.(从婴儿时开始我们就被教以礼貌规矩。) We are taught how to hold a knife and a fork and not to talk with our mouths full. We are taught how to shake hands and when to stand and when to sit and the way to introduce people.
Sometimes good manners in one place are very bad manners somewhere else. Almost everywhere eating together means that you are very friendly to each other. But in parts of Polynesia it is bad manners to be seen eating at all. They politely turn their backs on each other when they are taking food.
Some East Africans spit four times as a kind of blessing(祝福). They do it to show that they want a sick person to get well, or to bless a new born baby. In most other places, spitting means just something completely different. It's something to do to show that you hate someone.
When we go to visit someone we say "Hello" and "How are you" and things like that. If you were visiting an East African village, everyone would be very careful not to pay any attention to you. The polite thing there would be for you to go quietly, without speaking to anyone, and sit beside your friend. You would wait until he had finished what he was doing and then he would begin talking to you.
In a village in Arab, a visitor walks behind all the tents until he gets to the one he wants to visit. If he passed in front,he would be invited into each tent and asked to eat. It was rude to refuse.

Henry and his friend Sally are talking about online shopping.
Sally: Do you do a lot of your shopping online?
Henry: Not really. I like looking at what's available on the Internet before I actually buy it. Sometimes, I'll choose what I want in a shop, later buying it online if it's cheaper. You don't like buying things online, do you?
Sally: No. I'm a little worried about security issues. You never know who's trying to find out your codes and passwords. Aren't you worried about that?
Henry: Not really. I know that it happens, but if you buy from reputable companies with secure websites, it should be OK. Even though I use online shopping facilities, I don't think it's the best way.
Sally: I'm surprised to hear you say that. I thought you loved any digital things.
Henry: I do. I'm a big fan of using new digital products, but I don't want to sit in front of a computer screen all day. I think people need to get out and interact with other people.
Sally: So, how about coming to the department store with me? I want to see if there are any new summer clothes on sale yet.
Henry: Sure. I'd love to join you. Can we stop by the computer store? I just want to see if they have something.
Sally: Sure. While you're in the computer store, I will visit the book store opposite. I like to browse through their books if they have anything interesting.
Henry: OK. I've finished online. Let's go. I'll just get some money and my credit card.
Sally: Thanks for reminding me. I had forgotten to get mine.
