听力原文: My first semester of college was the worst I've been through. I had made plans during the summer to share an apartment with two of my close friends from high school. But before we moved in,problems started developing.

One of the two girls I was to share an apartment with was going to work instead of going to college。 However,a week before we were to move in,she found out that she didn't get the job. She is forced to live at home and look for work. The rest two of us lasted for a month and then agreed that we couldn't make it with the higher monthly rent payments. I started looking around.

I found another apartment and the rent wasn't bad. The place was noisy, but it was the best I could afford for the time. However, one day when I returned,I saw smoke coming from the back of the house. The cottage had caught fire, and my room was a burned mess。I was once more out of a place to stay.

I finally gave up looking around and moved home. I had to drive forty miles to school every day,so I almost spent as much on gas as I would have on lodging. I was very bored I almost lost the will to study. It had been really a bad semester!

(33)

A.To look for two of her close friends.

B.To stay at home and study.

C.To share an apartment with friends.

D.To move out and live alone.

1 The case for college has been accepted without question for more than a generation. All
high school graduates ought to go, says conventional wisdom and statistical evidence, because college will help them earn more money, become "better" people, and learn to be more responsible citizens than those who don't go.

2 But college has never been able to work its magic for everyone. And now that close to half our high school graduates are attending, those who don't fit the pattern are becoming more numerous, and more obvious. College graduates are selling shoes and driving taxis; college students interfere with each other's experiments and write false letters of recommendation in intense competition for admission to graduate school. Others find no stimulation in their studies, and drop out—often encouraged by college administrators.

3 Some observers say the fault is with the young people themselves—they are spoiled and they are expecting too much. But that's a condemnation of the students as a whole, and doesn't explain all campus unhappiness. Others blame the state of the world, and they are partly right. We've been told that young people have to go to college because our economy can't absorb an army of untrained eighteen-year-olds. But disappointed graduates are learning that it can no longer absorb an army of trained twenty-two-year-olds, either.

4 Some adventuresome educators and watchers have openly begun to suggest that college may not be the best, the proper, the only place for every young person after the completion of high school. We may have been looking at all those surveys and statistics upside down, it seems, and through the rosy glow of our remembered college experiences. Perhaps college doesn't make people intelligent, ambitious, happy, liberal, or quick to learn things—maybe it's just the other way around, and intelligent, ambitious, happy, liberal, quick-learning people are merely ones who have Been attracted to college in the first place. And perhaps all those successful college graduates would have been successful whether they had gone to college or not. This is heresy to those of us who have been brought up to believe that if a little schooling is good, more has to be much better. But contrary evidence is beginning to mount up.

By "fit the pattern" (in Para. 2) the author means that ______.

A.college graduates earn more money

B.college graduates are morally sounder

C.college graduates are more liberal

D.all of the above

College is a new and different experience for me. I'm away from home, so I have many
things to adjust to, such as being on my own and meeting many different types of people. There are a lot of things that I like about college that I would like to describe for you.

First of all, living at college gives me a sense of responsibility and of being on my own. My parents aren't around to say, "No, you're not going out tonight," or "Did you finish your homework?" Everything I do has to be my decision, and that makes me responsible for my own life. During the second week I was at college, I had to go out and look for a bank where I could open an account. And when I got to the bank, I had to decide whether to have a checking or savings account and whether or not to get a credit card. Decisions! Decisions! Friendly people are another thing I like about college. On the first day I came to Marymount University here in Virginia from New York, I was a bit confused about where I was going. My mother and I drove in. We did not know the building we were supposed to go to, but the guard was very nice. With a smile, he told us what building we were looking for and where we could park our car. My room was on the first floor of New Gerard, and I knew I had to go through some glass doors, but my mother and I didn't know which ones. Some students saw me and asked, "Are you a new student?" When they found out I was looking for New Gerard, one said, "Oh, just follow us; that's where we're going." Even now I feel comfortable in the dorm because there are friendly people around to talk with.I do like a lot of things about college, but that doesn't mean I don't think about things at home. Although I like college, I can still get homesick. New York is a very good place, too! And sometimes I miss it!

6. The text is perhaps written by ________.

A. a new student

B. a new teacher

C. a foreign reporter

D. a foreign visitor

7. What does "gives me a sense of responsibility" in the first sentence of Paragraph 2 mean? It means it makes me feel ________.

A. responsible for my parents.

B. responsible for my teacher.

C. responsible for the school.

D. responsible for myself.

8. One thing that he liked was ________.

A. the comfortable dorm

B. finding his way around

C. his studies as a first year student

D. the friendly people

9. What is New Gerard?

A. It's a student's name.

B. It's a teacher's name.

C. It's a dorm's name.

D. It's a school's name.

10. Which of the following is NOT true?

A. People in Marymount University are friendly.

B. The writer likes the new experience in the university.

C. The writer drove to Marymount University with his mother.

D. The writer is not homesick

Task 1

Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statements, numbered 36 through 40. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should make the correct choice.

College is a place to explore many possibilities; you really can't do it all—unless you manage your time wisely. Here are some tips I have found very helpful for managing my time and maximizing my study efforts:

1. Determine your goals. What do you want to get out of a college education? Academic (学术的)knowledge? Leadership experiences within a club? Decide what is most important to you. Then devote proportionate (成比例的) amounts of time to those efforts.

2. Plan ahead. You may think you can keep everything in your head, but as the activities on your schedule start piling up, making a schedule can really help organize even little tasks.

4. Motivate (激励) yourself! You know that TV show you've been dying to see, or that game of chess you've been waiting all week to challenge your friend to. These and many other special activities can be used for motivation. Promise yourself that you'll finish your biology assignment before you go off and "play". That way, you'll force yourself to work efficiently.(Don't rush through the assignment, though.)

5. Take a nap. Sometimes even a 20-minute nap in the afternoon will give you the extra energy you need to get through the day.

We need to plan ahead in order to________.

A.keep a record of all the events

B.better organize our activities

C.store everything in our head

D.pile up little tasks neatly
