What will the role of universities be in this globalized economy? How will they contribute to improving society through innovation that will improve the quality of life and support economic growth? How will they prepare their graduates who will extract the best and explore the greatest in this increasingly complex society?// It is important to remember that undergraduate education and post-graduate education are tightly linked to research. Our education programs should ensure that the students are learning in an atmosphere characterized by the pursuit of new knowledge and process of discovery. An interrelated educational program will create a flow of young, bright and uninhibitedminds to work on the frontier of discovery.// The fundamental mission of a university is the creation of new knowledge which sometimes has immediate practical applications. But that can never be the only goal. And making it a primary goal will frequently be short-sighted. Basic contributions to knowledge should be valued for being exactly that. Our university has an almost unique role in fostering such contribution.// Choosing the right people is the first and perhaps the most crucial step in ensuring an innovative environment. There are three types of people that can be important. The first class of individuals consists of fanciful visionaries. The second class of important people in innovative environment consists of revolutionary explorers. The third class of individuals consists of uninhibited executors.

CULTURE. The culture and subcultures we belong to shape our values, attitudes, and beliefs, and they influence the way we respond to the world around us. Understanding culture is therefore an increasingly important step in international business and in marketing in diverse countries such as the United States.
SOCIAL CLASS. In addition to being members of a particular culture, we also belong to a certain social class — upper, middle, lower, or somewhere in between. In general, members of various classes enjoy different activities, buy different goods, shop in different places, and react to different media.
REFERENCE GROUP. A reference group consists of people who have a good deal in common — family members, friends, co-workers, fellow students, teenagers, sports enthusiasts, music lovers, computer buffs. We are all members of many such reference groups, and we use the opinions of the appropriate group as a benchmark when we buy certain types of products or services. For example, shopping malls are today losing what has long been their most faithful audience — teens. That's because Generation Xers (those born between 1965 and 1978) think that malls are for parents and that malls have too many rules. So some retailers like Urban Outfitters and Tower Records refuse to open stores in most malls.
SELF-IMAGE. The tendency to believe that "you are what you buy" is especially prevalent among young people. Marketers capitalize on our need to express our identity through our purchases by emphasizing the image value of products and services. That's why professional athletes and musicians are frequently used as product endorsers — so that we incorporate part of their public image into our own self-image. After all, doesn't everyone want to "be like Mike Jordan"?
SITUATIONAL FACTORS. These factors include events or circumstances occurring in our lives that are more circumstantial in nature. For example, you have a coupon, you're in a hurry, it's Valentines' Day, it's your birthday, you're in a bad mood, and so on. Situational factors influence our buying patterns.

听力原文: It is a great privilege for me to be invited to speak at the tenth year reunion of State University' s graduating class. When you arrived on campus today, after a decade, you were probably impressed by two changes at State:
one, the absence of University Tower, the first building constructed on the campus, and a historic landmark for many years; and two, the disappearance of parking lots on main campus.
Two years ago, University Tower was inspected and found to be unsafe. In spite of efforts to restore it, it was necessary to level the building. A bell tower was constructed on the same site, built for the most part using the good brick that was saved from the original building. The original bells were also preserved. As for the parking lots, they have been replaced by grass, trees, and pedestrian walkways. Parking is now located in parking garages on the North and West sides of the campus.
Two more subtle changes have occurred within the past decade. One is the creation and expansion of the Division of Continuing Education for the Community, including a Saturday and summer enrichment program for children, and an afternoon and evening special interest program for adult. The other is the addition of the student population of many young people from abroad, especially students from Japan, Latin America, and the Middle East, Most international students are enrolled in the College of Engineering and the college of Business.
And so, State is a different place, but like University Tower, it is built of the same brick. We are still committed to the same age old ideals "quality education for our citizens", but we have extended our commitment beyond the borders of our state and nation to encompass the citizens and nations of the world.
What is the occasion for the man's speech?
A.Graduation.
B.A class reunion.
C.The dedication of a new building.
D.The groundbreaking ceremony for a pedestrian walkway on campus.
