2 Helen Bradshaw, a recent graduate with a degree in catering management, has spotted a ma
rket opportunity during

her first job with a large supermarket chain. She knows there is a growing market for distinctive, quality cakes in the

bakery sections of the supermarket chains, as well as in supplying independent individual premium cake shops, and

also for catering wholesalers supplying restaurants and hotels.

Helen is very determined to set up her own business under the brand name of ‘Helen’s cakes’, and has bought some

equipment – industrial food mixers, ovens, cake moulds – and also rented a small industrial unit to make the cakes.

Helen has created three sets of recipes – one for the premium cake shop market, one for the supermarkets and one

for the catering wholesalers but is uncertain which market to enter first. Each channel of distribution offers a different

set of challenges. The premium cake shop market consists of a large number of independent cake shops spread

through the region, each looking for daily deliveries, a wide product range and low volumes. The supermarkets are

demanding good quality, competitive prices and early development of a product range under their own brand name.

The catering wholesalers require large volumes, medium quality and low prices.

Helen has learnt that you are a consultant specialising in start-up enterprises and is looking to you for advice.

Required:

(a) Acting as a consultant, prepare a short report for Helen advising her on the advantages and disadvantages

each channel offers and the implications for a successful start-up. (12 marks)

第5题

Britain almost more than any other country in the world must seriously face the problem of building upwards, that is to say of accommodating(居住) a considerable proportion of its population in high blocks of flats. It is said that the Englishman objects to this type of existence, but if the case is such,he does in fact differ from the inhabitants of most countries of the world today. In the past our own blocks or flats have been associated with(把……同……联系起来) the lower-income groups and they have lacked the obvious provisions, such as central heating, constant hot water supply, electrically operated lifts from top to bottom, and so on,as well as such details, important notwithstanding(然而),as easy facilities for disposal(处理) of dust and rubbish and storage places for baby carriages on the ground floor, playgrounds for children on the top of the buildings, and drying grounds for washing. It is likely that the dispute regarding flats versus individual houses will continue to rage(风行) on for a long time as far as Britain is concerned, and it is unfortunate that there should be hot feelings on both sides whenever this subject is raised. Those who oppose the building of flats base their case primarily on the assumption that everyone prefers individual home and garden and on the high cost per unit of accommodation. The latter ignores the higher cost of providing full services to a scattered(分散)community and the cost in both money and time of the journey to work for the suburban resident.

A.English people, differently from most people in other countries, dislike living in flats

B.people in most countries of the world today are not opposed to living in flats

C.people in Britain are forced to move into high blocks of flats

D.modern flats still fail to provide the necessary facilities for living

2.What is said about the blocks of flats built in the past in Britain?

A.They were mostly inhabited by people who did not earn much.

B.They were usually not large enough to accommodate big families.

C.They were sold to people before necessary facilities were installed.

D.They provided playgrounds for children on the top of the buildings.

3.Some people oppose the building of flats because().

A.this living expenses for each individual family are higher

B.it involves higher cost compared with the building of houses

C.they believe that people like to live in houses with gardens

D.the disposal of rubbish remains a problem for those who lives in flats

4.The author mentions that people who live in suburban houses().

A.do not have access to easy facilities because they live away from the city

B.have to pay a lot of money to employ people to do service work

C.take longer time to know each other because they are a scattered community

第6题

Britain is not just one country and one people, even if some of its inhabitants think
so.Britain is, in fact, a nation which can be divided into several separate parts, each part being an individual country with its own language, character and cultural traditions. Thus Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales (and even Cornwall perhaps) do not claim to belong to “England” because their inhabitants are not strictly “English”.They are Scottish, Irish, Welsh (or Cornish) and many of them prefer to speak their own native tongue which in turn is incomprehensible(不可理解的) to the others.

These cultural minorities have been Britain's original inhabitants. In varying degrees they have managed to preserve their national identity, their particular customs and way of life. This is probably even more true of the remoter areas where traditional life has not been so affected by the growth of industrialism(工业化) as the border areas have been. The Celtic (凯尔特人) races are said to be more emotional by nature than the English.

An Irish temper is legendary. The Scots would rather forget about their reputation for excessive thrift (节俭) and prefer to be remembered for their ballads and dances, while the Welsh are famous for their singing. The Celtic temperament as a whole produces numerous writers and artists, such as the Irish Bernard Shaw, the Scottish Robert Burns, and Welsh Dylan Thomas, to mention but a few.

36.Some British people regard Britain as().

A.a single, unified country

C.a wholly Celtic country

B.a country of foreign cultures

D.an individualistic unit

37.“Their own native tongue” means().

A.the language of a foreign country

B.the language of their own country

C.the British way of speaking

D.a secret language

38.“A cultural minority” could be described as().

A.educated people who are few in number

B.people of the same race who are small in stature (身材)

C.members of ethic groups under the age of 12

D.small ethnic groups

39.According to the passage some cultural minorities have().

A.lost their individual character centuries ago

B.retained their individual character

C.lost count of their numbers

D.managed to preserve their English character

40.What may be one of the probable reasons for preservation of traditional life? ()

A.Ethnic custom

B.A specialized life style

C.The growth of industrialism

D.Geographical isolation
