Jenny and her sister, Carol did a personality test and neither is very happy with the
results."Hey, I got 62 points. The results say that I am an aggressive person. I don't think I am, do you, Carol? And it says here that I am boastful. I am not boastful," says Jenny."Well, perhaps a little, Jenny. Do you remember the time when you got top marks in that English test and you kept going around telling everybody? And then you asked Paul what he got when you know how bad he is at English. When he wouldn't tell you, you ripped his test paper out of his hand" replied Carol. "But look at my results. I only got 19 points. Does that really mean that I am shy and indecisive?""Yes," said her sister. "When did you last make a decision about anything?""I decided to get up this morning," said Carol."Super! And then you asked me what you should wear and if it was a good idea to go bowling this afternoon with your friends!""Yes, well. I sometimes do have problems reaching a decision but only on unimportant things."“Really?” asked her sister. "Is that why you ask Mum what you should study and where? Is that something unimportant? You always want something else to make the decisions and you’re afraid of getting too involved with anyone or anything."“Maybe l am just afraid of making the wrong decision,” 'said Carol defensively.Choose the correct answer.

When we talk about intelligence we do not mean the ability to get good scores on certain
kinds of tests or even the ability to do well in school. By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving, especially in a new situation. If we want to test intelligence,we need to find out how a person acts instead of how much he knows to do.For example, when in a new situation,an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him. He tries to find out all he can do,and then he acts immediately and tries to do something about it. He probably isn’t sure how it all works out,but at least he tries. And if he cannot make things work out right,he doesn’t feel ashamed that he failed,he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special outlook in life,a special feeling about life, and a special way of how he fits into it.If you look at children, you’ll see a great difference between what we call "bright" children and "not bright" children. They are actually two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amounts of intelligence. For example, the bright child really wants to find out about life—he tries to get in touch with everything around him. But the unintelligent child keeps more to himself and his own dream world; he seems to have a wall between him and life in general.

A、work by oneself do well in any

D、Because he has little interest in things around himself.

3.In a new situation,an intelligent person ().

A、knows more about what might happen to him

B、is well-prepared for his action

C、pays greater attention to the situation

A、feel ashamed about the failure

Silent Listening

If something bad just happened (happen) to your friend, what would you do? Would you mention it to him and say you feel sorry about it? Would you offer support or advice? According to Ruth Clark, such 41 (treat) could mean well, but it might not be what he 42 (real) wants or needs.

Clark asked some college students to imagine some 43 (pleasant) situations, e.g., a low exam grade or the dad’s 44 (lose) of his job.The students were then 45 (ask) how they would like to be treated by a friend who learned of the bad situation from someone else. The results were a little 46 (surprise). Some said they would want and expect their friend to mention the 47 (annoy) situation, but most of the students in the study 48 (respond) that they would like the friend not to do it.The students made the 49 (decide) for themselves whether to discuss their problem with a friend. So, there is value in being a silent 50 (listen) around a troubled friend.

Passage Two The other day I heard an American say to a Chinese student of English "You s

Passage Two

The other day I heard an American say to a Chinese student of English "You speak very good English." But the student answered, "No, no. My English is very poor." The foreigner was quite surprised at the answer. Thinking he had not made himself understood or the student had not heard him clearly, he said, "Yes indeed, you speak English very well." But the Chinese student still kept saying "No". In the end the foreigner gave up and was at a loss what to say. What's wrong with the student's answer? It is because he did not accept a compliment(赞美的话)as the English people do. He should have said "Thank you" instead of "No". He actually understood what the American had said. But he thought he should be modest. If he said "Thank you", that would mean he was too proud. According to the western culture, if someone says the dishes you have cooked are very delicious, you should say "Thank you". If someone says to a Woman "You look so beautiful with the new clothes on", she should be very happy and answer "Thank you". In our country we think being modest is a virtue and showing off a bad thing. But in the west, if you are modest and say "No, I'm afraid I can't do it well", then the others will take it for granted that you really cannot do it. If you often say "No", you will certainly be looked down upon by others. When asking for a job, if one says something like "Let me have a try on the job" instead of "Yes, I can certainly do it," he or she will never expect to get it. So in the west one should always be confident. Without self-confidence, he cannot go anywhere. Confidence is of great importance to one in a country where competition is quite keen.

40. Why was the American surprised at the Chinese student's answer?

A. Because he wondered whether the student could really speak good English.

B. Because he could hardly hear what the student had said.

C. Because he wouldn't like others to say "No".

D. Because the way to accept a compliment in China is not the same as that in the western countries.

The Negotiating Table:You can negotiate virtually anything. Projects, resources, expectations and deadlines are all outcomes of negotiation. Some people negotiate deals for a living. Dr. Herb Cohen is one of these professional talkers, called in by companies to negotiate on their behalf. He approaches the art of negotiation as a game because, as he is usually negotiating for somebody else, he says this helps him drain the emotional content from his conversation. He is working in a competitive field and needs to avoid being too adversarial. Whether he succeeds or not, it is important to him to make a good impression so that people will recommend him.The starting point for any deal, he believes, is to identify exactly what you want from each other. More often than not, one party will be trying to persuade the other round to their point of view. Negotiation requires two people at the end saying ‘yes”. This can be a problem because one of them usually begins by saying “no”. However, although this can make talks more difficult, this is often just a starting point in the negotiation game. Top management may well reject the idea initially because it is the safer option but they would not be there if they were not interested. It is a misconception that skilled negotiators are smooth operators in smart suits. Dr. Cohen says that one of his strategies is to dress down so that the other side can relate to you. Pitch your look to suit your customer. You do not need to make them feel better than you but, For example, dressing in a style that is not overtly expensive or successful will make you more approachable. People will generally feel more comfortable with somebody who appears to be like them rather than superior to them. They may not like you but they will feel they can trust you.Dr. Cohen suggests that the best way to sell your proposal is by getting into the world of the other side. Ask questions rather than give answers and take an interest in what the other person is saying, even if you think what they are saying is silly. You do not need to become their best friends but being too clever will alienate them. A lot of deals are made on impressions. Do not rush what you are saying---put a few hesitations in, do not try to blind them with your verbal dexterity. Also, you should repeat back to them what they have said to show you take them seriously.Inevitably some deals will not succeed. Generally the longer the negotiations go on, the better chance they have because people do not want to think their investment and energies have gone to waste. However, joint venture can mean joint risk and sometimes, if this becomes too great, neither party may be prepared to see the deal through. More common is a corporate culture clash between companies, which can put paid to any deal. Even having agreed a deal, things may not be tied up quickly because when the lawyers get involved, everything gets slowed down as they argue about small details.Dr. Cohen thinks that children are the masters of negotiation. Their goals are totally selfish. They understand the decision-making process within families perfectly. If Mum refuses their request, they will troop along to Dad and pressure him. If all else fails, they will try the grandparents, using some emotional blackmail. They can also be very single-minded and have an inexhaustible supply of energy for the cause they are pursuing. So there are lessons to be learned from watching and listening to children.

1. Why does Dr. Cohen treat negotiation as a game?

2. Why do many people say “no” to a suggestion in the beginning of the negotiation?

3. What does dress down mean?

4. What is the purpose of getting into the world of the other side?

5. What should we learn children’s negotiation techniques?
