However, encouragement of critical thinking in students is one of the goals of most colleges and universities. Few professors require students to share the professors' own beliefs. In general, professors are more concerned that students learn to question and critically examine the arguments of others, including some of their own beliefs or values. This does not mean that professors insist that you change your beliefs, either. It does mean , however, that professors will usually ask you to support the views you express in class or in your writing.
If your premises (前提) are shaky, or if your arguments are not logical, professors personally point out the false reasoning in your arguments. Most professors want you to learn to recognize the premises of your arguments, to examine whether you really accept these premises, and to understand whether or not you draw logical conclusions. Put it this way. Professors don't tell you what to think; they try to teach you how to think.
On the other hand, if you intend to disagree with your professors in class, you should be prepared to offer a strong argument in support of your ideas. Arguing just for the sake of arguing usually does not promote a critical examination of ideas. Many professors interpret it as rudeness.

Passage 1
Questions are based on the following passage.
As prices and building costs keep rising, the"do-it-yourself"(DIY) trend (趋势) in the U.S.continues to grow.
"We needed furniture(家具) for our living room," says John Ross,"and we just didn't have enough money to buy it.So we decided to try making a few tables and chairs."(76) John got married six months ago, and like many, young people these days, they are straggling to make a home at a time when the cost of living is very high. The Rosses took a two-week course for $280 at a night school. Now they build all their furniture and make repairs around the house.
Jim Hatfield has three boys and his wife died.He has a full-time job at home as well as in a shoemaking factory. Last month, he received a car repair bill for $420."I was deeply upset about
it.Now I've finished a car repair course. I should be able to fix the car by myself."
John and Jim are not unusual people. In order to save money, most families in the country are doing everything they can so that they can fight the high cost of living. If you want to become a
"do-it-yourselfer," you can go to DIY classes. And for those who don't have time to take a course,
there are books that tell you how you can do things yourself.
We can learn from the text that many newly married people__________ 查看材料

Then we saw a dog walk up to the front of the store. It was a 5 dog - we could tell that it had been feeding puppies. She was terribly in need of something to eat. There were people 6 by and not even taking a look at her. She might not have been as 7 and clean as most, but she still deserved better. We still did not do anything, but someone did. The guy, who did not buy himself anything to eat, went back into the 8,bought a can of dog food and fed that dog.
I know that this story isn't as inspirational as most stories, but it 9 a great part in our lives. You see, that was Mother's Day weekend.A lot of people forget that some animals are 10 too. It took a straggler (流浪汉) to show me what I should have done. He made me a better man that day.
