"We're more than halfway (中途) now; it's only two miles farther to the tavern (客栈) ," said the driver.

"I'm glad of that," answered the stranger, in a more sympathetic way. He meant to say more but the east wind blew clear down a man's throat if he tried to speak. The girl's voice was quite attractive; however, later he spoke again.

"You don't feel the cold so much at twenty below zero in the Western country. There isn't such damp chill (潮冷)", he said, and then it seemed as if he had blamed the uncomplaining young driver. I AM A COURIER

I am a courier. Many people today are glad to see us, because they expect to receive what they have bought on the Internet. When I see their eager faces, I feel that my job is valuable. I am proud of my job. Why did I choose to be a courier？

The first benefit is, I think, couriers can usually deliver an item faster than it would have taken if sent by other means. For example, a person may need to send a document to someone else. He could do this by sending it through the mail. If the two parties are in the same city, this transaction is likely to take at least one day. Couriers, however, usually can make it happen within hours.

Secondly, couriers generally offer a receipt for the delivery and that can make their clients feel more secure. Postal services generally are not as efficient in this regard. Even text messages and e-mails may not be comparable. In many cases, without delivery confirmation, the sender knows that something was sent, but there is no confirmation as to whether it was received or when it was received.

Most importantly, the Internet has changed people’s shopping habits. More and more people tend to shop on the Internet. The goods bought on the Internet have to be delivered by couriers. So a courier can make more money if he wants to work longer hours.

That’s why I have chosen to work as a courier. Well, that’s about my job. Time is money. I have to send packages to the next place now. Talk to you later.

Shortly after the war, my brother and I were invited to spend a few days' holiday with an uncle who had just returned from abroad. He rented a cottage in the country, although he rarely spent much time there. The cottage, however, had no comfortable furniture in it, many of the windows were broken and the roof leaked, making the whole house damp.

On our first evening, we sat around the fire after supper listening to the stories our uncle had had to tell of his many adventures in distant countries. I was so tired after the long train journey that I would have preferred to go to bed, but I could not bear to miss any of my uncle's exciting tales.

He was just in the middle of describing a rather terrifying experience he had, when there was a loud crash from the bedroom above, the one where my brother and I were going to sleep.

"It sounds as if the roof has fallen in!" shouted my uncle, with a loud laugh.

When we got to the top of the stairs and opened the bedroom door, a strange sight met our eyes. A large part of the ceiling had collapsed (坍塌), falling right on to the pillow of my bed. I was glad that I had stayed up late to listen to my uncle's stories, otherwise I should certainly have been seriously injured, perhaps killed.

That night we all slept on the floor of the sitting room downstairs not wishing to risk our lives by sleeping under a roof which might at any moment collapse on our heads. We left for London the very next morning and my uncle gave up his cottage in the country. This was not the kind of adventure he cared for, either!

An old Indian story says that the game of chess (国际象棋) was invented by Sissa Ben, Prime Minister of King Shirham. As soon as the invention was finished he gave it to the king, who was glad and asked him what he would like to have in return. To the king's surprise, what Sissa wanted seemed very little. "Your Majesty, "said the minister, kneeling before the king. "I want nothing but some wheat. Please put a grain of wheat on the first square of the chessboard (棋盘), two on the second, four on the third, eight on the fourth.., and so on, doubling the number for each following square. Give me enough grains to cover the 64 squares of the chessboard."

"You don't ask for much, my honest servant. You might have asked for gold or money," said the king and then ordered a bag of wheat brought to the palace.

But when the counting began, with one grain for the first square, two for the second, four for the third, and so on, the bag was emptied before the 20th square.
