Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate

Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each

course which he attends gives him a credit which he may count towards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting for one semester. A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student would probably attend four or five courses each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible to spread the period of work for a degree over a longer period of time. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree courses, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice.

For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded, and the record is available for the student to show to perspective employers. All this imposes a constant pressure and strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The effective work of maintaining discipline is usually performed by students who advise the academic authorities. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating has to appear before a student court. With enormous numbers of students, the operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.

1. Normally a student would at least attend _______ classes each week.

A. 36

B. 12

C. 20

D. 15

2. According to the first paragraph an American student is allowed _______.

A. to live in a different university

B. to take a particular course in a different university

C. to live at home and drive to classes

D. to get two degrees from two different universities

3. American universities students are usually under pressure of work because _________

A. their academic performance will affect their future career

B. they are heavily involved in student affairs

C. they have to observe university disciplines

D. they want to run for positions of authority

4. Some students are enthusiastic for positions in student organizations probably because _____

A. they have the constant pressure and strain of their study

B. they will then be able to stay longer in the university.

C. such positions help them get better jobs

D. such positions are usually well-paid

5. The student organizations seem to be effective in ______.

A. dealing with the academic affairs of the university

B. ensuring that the students observe university regulations

C. evaluating students’ performance by bringing them before a court.

D. keeping up the students’ enthusiasm for social activities

Normally, at the beginning of the school year, the Student Services of universities and co
lleges publish lists of rooms and apartments available off campus. You should pay attention to these services as well as advertisements in the local or college/university newspapers, and bulletin boards on the campus or in supermarkets. You might also walk through the section of the city or town in which you wish to live to see whether there are "FOR RENT" signs on the doors of houses. You may also ask other students for advice, either Canadian or from overseas. It would be wise to set aside several full days to look for accommodation at the beginning of your program. This will allow you to obtain an idea of the range of housing available. Usually, it is not a good idea to take the first accommodation that you see unless, of course, you are certain that it will be satisfactory.

Accommodation outside the center of a city is normally less expensive than accommodation in the center of the city.

How to find rooms or apartments for rent:

You should pay attention to:

【46】of your university or college;

【47】in some newspaper; or

【48】.

It would be wise to set aside【49】to search for accommodation.

It is not a good idea to take the first accommodation unless it is【50】.

材料:When a clean bill of lading has been issued, estoppel arises or,in other words, the car

材料:

When a clean bill of lading has been issued, estoppel arises or,in other words, the carrier is prevented from proving,as against a third party relying on the clean bill of lading, that there was any thing wrong. In the case of inherent vice, however, which is a natural defect in the thing shipped, the carrier is not estopped by his clean bill of lading, because a clean bill of lading,in stating that a certain cargo is on board, gives sufficient notice that this cargo,in the natural course of events, may have certain qualities or defects which all similar cargo normally has.For example,a cargo of flour will shrink slightly, and this fact does not have to be noted on the face of the bill of lading.

Similarly, where cargo is unfit to withstand the ordinary incidents of the contractual voyage contemplated by the parties, owing to some inherent vice or hidden defect presented within it,the carrier is not estopped by the clean bill of lading from asserting the inherent defect exception, provided that the damage has not been aggravated by any conduct of the carrier or those for whom he is responsible.

The carrier issuing a clean bill of lading is only bound by his statements as to the outward condition of the cargo and is therefore not estopped from proving inherent vice or hidden defect when that vice or defect was not apparent at the time of shipment. In other words,a clean bill of lading does not necessarily fulfill the shipper&39;s burden of proof in respect to inherent vice or hidden defect.

问题:

The slight shrinkage of flour is ________.

A.an inherent defect of the cargo

B.a damage which is always aggravated by the conduct of carrier

C.a vice or defect which should be noted on face of B/L due to the fact that it is not apparent at the time of shipment

D.an outward condition of the cargo

The carrier issuing a clean bill of lading will only be bound by ________.A.any thing wrong in the natural course of events

B.the conduct of the carrier or those for whom he is responsible

C.inherent vice or hidden defect presented within the cargo

D.the apparent order and condition of the cargo

Of the following,________ in the cargo shipped on board his vessel should be considered as a thing that will give rise to estoppel on the part of the carrier.A.ordinary incident

B.hidden defect

C.inherent vice

D.inherent defect

It is concluded that on issuing a clean bill of lading, the carrier ________.A.indicates that the cargo is unfit to withstand the ordinary incidents of the contractual voyage contemplated by the parties

B.gives sufficient notice that this cargo has no defects which all similar cargo normally has

C.will be prevented from proving there is any natural defect in the thing shipped

D.will not be estopped from proving inherent vice or hidden defect when that vice or defect was not apparent at the time of shipment

University teaching in the United Kingdom is very different at both undergraduate and grad
uate levels from that of many overseas countries.

An undergraduate course consists of a series of lectures, seminars and tutorials and, in science and engineering, laboratory classes, which in total account for about 15 hours per week. Arts students may well find that their official contact with teachers is less than this average, while science and engineering students may expect to be timetabled for up to 20 hours per week. Students studying for a particular degree will take a series of lecture courses which run in parallel at a fixed time in each week and may last one academic term or the whole year. Associated with each lecture course are seminars, tutorials and laboratory classes which draw upon, analyze, illustrate or amplify the topics presented in the lectures. Lecture classes can vary in size from 20 to 200 although larger sized lectures tend to decrease as students progress into the second and third year and more options become available. Seminars and tutorials are on the whole much smaller than lecture classes and in some departments can be on a one-to-one basis (that is, one member of staff to one student). Students are normally expected to prepare work in advance for seminars and tutorials and this can take the form. of researching a topic for discussion, by writing essays or by solving problems. Lectures, seminars and tutorials are all one hour in length, whilst laboratory classes usually last either 2 or 3 hours. Much emphasis is put on how to spend as much time if not more studying by themselves as being taught. In the UK it is still common for people to say that they are "reading" for a degree. Each student has a tutor whom they can consult on any matter whether academic or personal. Although the tutor will help, motivation for study is expected to come from the student.

According to the passage, science and engineering courses seem to be more ________than arts courses.

A.motivating

B.varied

C.demanding

D.interesting

第10题

If the salinity(含盐量) of ocean waters is analyzed, it is round to vary only slightly fro

If the salinity(含盐量) of ocean waters is analyzed, it is round to vary only slightly from place to place. Nevertheless, some of these small changes are important. There are three basic processes that cause a change in oceanic salinity. One of these is the subtraction of water from the ocean by means of evaporation—conversion of liquid water to water vapor. In this manner, the salinity is increased, since the sales stay behind. If this is carried to the extreme, of course, white crystals of salt would be left behind; this, by the way, is how much of the table salt we use is actually obtained.

The opposite of evaporation is precipitation, such as rain, by which water is added to the ocean. Here the ocean is being diluted so that the salinity is decreased. This may occur in areas of high rainfall or in coastal regions where rivers flow into the ocean. Thus salinity may be increased by the subtraction of water by evaporation, or decreased by the addition of fresh water by precipitation or runoff.

Normally, in tropical regions where the sun is very strong, the ocean salinity is somewhat higher than it is in other parts of the world where there is not as much evaporation. Similarly, in coastal regions where rivers dilute the sea, salinity is somewhat lower than in other oceanic areas.

A third process by which salinity may be altered is associated with the formation and melting of sea ice. When seawater is frozen, the dissolved materials are left behind. In this manner, seawater directly beneath freshly formed sea ice has a higher salinity than it did before the ice appeared. Of course, when this ice melts, it will tend to decrease the salinity of the surrounding water.

In the Weddell Sea, off Antarctica, the densest water in the oceans is formed as a result of this freezing process, which increases the salinity of cold water. This heavy water sinks and is found in the deeper portions of the oceans of the world.

What does the passage mainly discuss?

A.The elements of salt.

B.The bodies of water of the world.

C.The many forms of ocean life.

D.The salinity of ocean water.
