The production equipment for the new confectionery line would cost $2 million and an additional initial investment of $750,000 would be needed for working capital. Capital allowances (tax-allowable depreciation) on a 25% reducing balance basis could be claimed on the cost of equipment. Profit tax of 30% per year will be payable one year in arrears. A balancing allowance would be claimed in the fourth year of operation.
The average general level of inflation is expected to be 3% per year and selling price, variable costs, fixed costs and working capital would all experience inflation of this level. BRT Co uses a nominal after-tax cost of capital of 12% to appraise new investment projects.
Required:
(a) Assuming that production only lasts for four years, calculate the net present value of investing in the new product using a nominal terms approach and advise on its financial acceptability (work to the nearest $1,000). (13 marks)
(b) Comment briefly on the proposal to use a four-year time horizon, and calculate and discuss a value that could be placed on after-tax cash flows arising after the fourth year of operation, using a perpetuity approach. Assume, for this part of the question only, that before-tax cash flows and profit tax are constant from year five onwards, and that capital allowances and working capital can be ignored. (5 marks)
(c) Discuss THREE ways of incorporating risk into the investment appraisal process. (7 marks)

The journey two divers(潜水员)made some time ago to the very deepest point on the earth make us realize how much of the world still remains to be studied. The two men went down seven miles to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean inside a small ball to find out if there are any ocean currents(水流)or signs of life.
It was necessary to set out early, so that the ball would come to the surface in daylight, and so be easily found by the mother ship which would be waiting for it. The divers began preparations(准备)early in the morning and soon afterwards, when all was ready, the steel ball disappeared under the surface of the water.
The divers felt as if they were going down steps as they passed through warm and cold layers(层)of water. In time, the temperature dropped to freezing point. They kept in touch with the mother ship by telephone telling how they felt. Then, at a depth(深度)of 3,000 feet, the telephone stopped working and they were quite cut off from the outside world. All went well until some four hours later at 30,000 feet, the men were frightened by a loud, cracking(爆裂)noise: even the smallest hole in the ball would have meant instant death. Luckily, though, it was only one of the outer(外部的)windows that had broken. Soon afterwards, the ball touched the soft ocean floor raising a big cloud of "dust" made up of small dead sea-creatures. Here, powerful lights lit up the dark water and the men were surprised to see fish swimming just above them quite untroubled by the great water pressure(压力). But they did not dare to leave the lights on for long , as the heat from them made the water boil. Quite unexpectedly, the telephone began working again and the faint(微弱的)but clear voices of the divers were heard on the mother ship seven miles away. After a stay of thirty minutes the men began their journey up, arriving three hours later, cold and wet through, but none the worse for their experience.

A. if there are water currents and life in the great depths
B. if people can stand the severe cold in the great depths
C. if there are steps in the great depths
D. if the telephone works well in the great depths
2. The divers set out early in the morning so that _____.
A. they could return to the surface during the day
B. they could see at the bottom of the ocean
C. they could avoid the cold at night
D. they could stay long at the bottom
3. Which of the following statements is true?
A. The ocean water temperature decreases steadily with the depth
B. There are steps on the way to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean
C. There are steps between the water layers of different temperature
D. The water layers of different temperatures made the divers feel as if they were going down steps
4. As the divers went down to the ocean floor, the telephone _____.
A. kept working all the time
B. stopped working at a depth of 3,000 feet and began working again after they reached the bottom
C. stopped working at a depth of 3,000 feet and began working at 30,000 feet
D. stopped working at a depth of 3,000 feet and began working again when they returned to the same depth
5. On the ocean floor, the divers found that _____.
A. there was no life but some small dead sea-creatures
B. fish were swimming as freely as they do near the surface
C. fish were not swimming freely in the dark water
D. fish were not swimming freely under the high water pressure

At the beginning, Rose realized the only thing that could stop her was fear of ,failure. "I couldhear my friends and family saying, 'Why did you leave a good job?' If I failed, would I be okay facing them? And: t thought, 'So what? I can go back for further study in medicine.' I started to accept that it would be okay to say, 'I failed, but I tried.' Once I was comfortable with that th6fight, the fear came to an end. I realized I feared regret more than failure. And after you turn to the path you choose, there is nothing acceptable but Success"
Now, Rose has no regrets about leaving medicine. "What I'm doing is not all that different from: what I Was doing as a doctor. The goal is the same: to relieve (减轻) pain. A former professor told me: 'You're helping hundreds of thousands of women with your shoes. As a doctor, you would have helped only the few who went to your office. You're having a much greater effect.'
Looking back, Rose admits she caught a couple of lucky breaks. "To me, luck is about being prepared for those opportunities (机会) that come knocking. You have to have an open mind, the right skilis and all your senses working 'to see what opportunities present themselves. Luck can open the door, but you still have to walk through it."

When we first met,I fell hard for Christopher right away. although I wouldn't call it love. I'd never been with a man who was prettier than I was,but after a while I got used to this. and it didn't bother me so much. I was recovering from a broken heart and needed something to help me move on. If it wasn't love,it was good enough, and when he asked me to marry him I jumped at the chance. knowing that it might be my last.
Things started out so well. I was working steadily and Christopher was patiently climbing up the ladder in his department. Then, without any warning, one gray winter afternoon in year five,he just upped and left his desk at the bank, handed in his resignation, and came home and told me he wanted to start an interior design business.
He has always loved mixing and matching, and has a real eye for color, texture, and shape, but the idea of turning a hobby into a business wasn't something we had ever discussed. I thought the stress of his job was becoming too much and perhaps he would take a few months off over the spring and summer to relax and get the idea out of his system. I didn't believe he could be serious. But once he had a few clients,he began to draw up plans, ordering catalogues and turning our empty workshop into a kind of makeshift studio with all of his sketches pinned to the wall. After spending a lot of time and money on all of this preparation, and really doing quite a nice job of it,he called each client in turn and apologized, saying he wouldn't be able to design their living spaces after all.
As a financial planner,Christopher______.
A.paid his clients very well
B.was trusted by his clients
C.was making his yoga studio profitable
D.could make his family's budget balanced
