Young people tend to be critical of their parents at times and blame them for most ofthe misunderstandings between them. I think it is true that parents often underestimate theirteenage children and also(36)how they themselves felt when young.

For example, young people like doing things on spur of the moment: it is one of theirways of showing that they can accept a(37). Older people worry more(38); most ofthem plan things ahead, at least in the back of their minds, and do not like their plans to beupset by something(39).

So my advice to you is this: when you want to borrow the family car or get your mother tomend something for you, you will have better success ifyou can possibly ask in advance.

Young people also make it harder for their parents to trust them because they liketo(40)them. They say things like "Everybody we know drives at ninety miles anhour", or "We"ve all decided we won"t study for our final examinations —— it"s(41)"Young people often irritate their parents with their choices in clothes and hairstyles,in entertainers and music. Although April did not bring the rains we all hoped for, and although the Central Valley

Although April did not bring the rains we all hoped for, and although the Central Valley doesn’t generally experience the atmospheric (大气的) sound and lightning that can accompany those rains, it is still important for parents to be able to answer the youthful questions about thunder and lightning.

The reason that these that these two wonders of nature are so difficult for many adults to explain to children is that they are not very well understood by adults themselves. For example, did you know that the lighting we see flashing(闪烁) down to the earth from a cloud is actually flashing up to a cloud from the earth? Our eyes cheat us into thinking we see a downward motion when it’s actually the other way round. But then, if we believe only what we think we see, we’d still insist that the sun rises in the morning and sets at night.

Most lightning flashes take place inside a cloud, and only a relative few can be seen jumping between two clouds or between the earth and a cloud. But, with about 2,000 thunderstorms taking place above the earth every minute of the day and night, there’s enough activity to produce about 100 lightning strikes on the earth every second.

Parents can use thunder and lightning to help their children learn more about the world around them. When children understand that the light of the lightning flashes reaches their eyes almost at the same moment, but the sound of the thunder takes about 5 seconds to travel just one mile, they can begin to time the interval between the flash and the crash to learn how close they are to the actual spark.

26. According to the first paragraph, in the Central Valley area, rains come _____.

A. when it is April

B. when the field is dry

C. when people all hope for it

D. usually without thunder and lighting

27. We tend to think that lighting moves downward because_____.

A. our eyes play a joke on us

B. we take it to be true scientifically

C. we cannot see it clearly most of the time

D. it always runs down from a cloud to the earth

28. Which of the following is NOT true about lighting according to the passage?

A. Most lightning flashes take place inside a cloud.

B. About 2,000 thunderstorms occur above the earth every minute.

C. People can seldom see lightning flashes running between two clouds or between the earth and a cloud.

D. The thunderstorms happening above the earth can provide enough power to produce about 100 lightning strikes every second.

29. What does the word “ spark” in the last paragraph probably refer to ?

A. Cloud

B. Rain

C. Thunderstorm

D. Lightning flash

30. What does the passage imply?

A. Seeing is believing.

B. We should never trust what we see or hear.

C. People may easily make mistakes in their understanding of nature.

D. Children sometimes know more about nature than their parents do.

Thank You, Volunteers!

By the end of each year, we'd try to show our appreciation to those volunteers who have helped to make life more beautiful. Therefore, it’s in December that we tend to think of a way in which we could show our thanks to them. Here are some posts online to thank those who have volunteered to offer all kinds of help.

Potlucks for Staff and Volunteers

(1) I like to hold potlucks at the office and invite volunteers to make them feel like part of the team. The volunteers are asked to bring with them a big appetite. (Posted on 29 December, 2018 by Nazia Anderson)

Giving Cards to Volunteers

This year I sent out thank-you cards to the volunteers. It’s a great way to show our thanks toward the end of the year, and (2) this makes our volunteers know we’re grateful to them for what they’ve done in the busy year. (Posted on 1 December, 2018 by Traci Lato)

Hats Off to Volunteers

Our library volunteers received various baskets of goodies, boxes of chocolates, flowers and plants, etc. The staff wore hats all week and tipped them toward the volunteers as we saw them. The volunteers here seemed to appreciate the silent effort to recognize them. (Posted on 20 December, 2018 by Aimee Hepler)

Afternoon at the Movies

During National Volunteer Week we recognized our volunteers by taking them to the movies. (3) We had our recognition awards program before the movie started, followed by a 15-minute coffee break. The volunteers had a bag of popcorn and a drink waiting for them. They also had their choice of 2 movies. It was very well received and we will do it again next year. (Posted on 23 December, 2018 by Linda Bacon)

Pat on the Back

Here’s a very inexpensive idea that should work for any type of organization. I simply draw around my hand on a piece of paper, print “Here’s a pat on the back for You, Mr. / Ms. for all the hard work and effort you’ve made here”, then copy it onto colored paper. The teens at our community help me cut them out. (Posted on 20 December, 2018 by Wu Qing)
