Summer is almost here, which means it is time to sign(报名) your children up for swim cl
asses again at the Community Pool. Classes begin on Monday, May 1, and will continue throughout the summer. Fifteen swim classes are being offered. Each class lasts ten hours. A new class starts each week of the summer. Each class costs $20. The pool is big enough for six students per class.

Classes will increase in difficulty each week. The first week is for children up to six years old. The last week is for advanced swimmers who want to improve their race and endurance skills.

Students can sign up for as many classes as they like, but they must pass the skills level test. For example, students who sign up for Level 4 (Stroke Readiness) must show their certificate(证书) for completing Level 3 or must demonstrate the front crawl and backstroke. Children cannot sign up for a level they are not ready for. Children who have never attended Community Pool classes must show up April 29 or 30 for a swim skills evaluation(评估). Instructors will rate the students and assign them to a particular skill level.

Swim classes are fun for all. Children learn new skills and make new friends. Parents get to meet other parents in the community. Swimming, like bicycling, is a healthy and valuable skill that, once learned, is never forgotten.

“It's a joy to teach young children,” said Ginger, the lead instructor for swimming programs. “More than half of them are terrified when we put them into the water the first time. Two months later, they're begging their parents to go to the pool every day.”

There are two common explanations for origin of tipping. The Oxford English Dictionary say
s tip was seventeenth-century underworld slang for “give” ———as in “Tip me your money or your life. ” Opponents of tipping will probably prefer this explanation, since it suggests the practice as originally a form. of robbery. A less reputable, but nonetheless charming explanation is that in Renaissance(文艺复兴) coffeehouses, boxes were set near the door, into which customers could drop money: These boxes, according to the story, bore the legend “To Insure Promptitude, ” which was ultimately shortened to TIP. Whether it was a serving woman or a boss with his or her eye on depressing wages who first thought up the idea, the story does not say.

Tipping became common in England by the middle of the eighteenth century. Because it is ill-suited to a country without an established servant class, it did not catch on in America until after the Civil War, when former slaveholders suddenly found themselves having to pay the help and when new-rich industrialists adopted the European fashion. By the turn of the century, we had made the custom our own, and the American “big tipper ” was on his way.

Today, although the lines between bribery(贿赂) and thanks for services remain as vague as ever, tipping has become universal, not least because, in an increasingly uncertain economy, it provides the growing service class with income that is at least as reliable as wages and that is less subject to tax review.

Not surprisingly, government officials as among the few die-hards who still question the tipping system. They have a point too. Tippers ’ International Association estimates that U.S. workers get about $5 billion a year in tips.

In the seventeenth century, tip was probably a word used by_____.

A.lawbreakers

B.customers

C.waitresses

D.coffeehouse bosses

Tipping did not become popular in U.S. until after the Civil War because______.A.the country was free of a servant class

B.former slaveholders did not want to pay the help

C.northern industrialists refused to adopt the European fashion

D.tipping was contradictory to the American custom

Tipping is universally accepted mainly because_______.A.it is an easy way to make money

B.it ensures people a good and prompt service

C.it enables the service class to be free from taxes

D.it supplies the service class with a sort of reliable income

Which of the following words can best describe the government officials ’ attitudes towards the tipping system?A.Positive.

B.Negative.

C.Doubtful.

D.Indifferent.

The passage is about_______.A.the origin of tipping

B.the practice of tipping in U.S

C.the popularity of tipping

D.the shaping of the tipping system

The Princess Disease

Have you ever heard of the princess disease? It is a terrible disease. __26__ It wastes away at one’s social life and people’s tolerance. People with this disease think they are better than everyone else, without a real reason.

Jin is a girl who suffers from this disease. __27__ She thinks she is better looking than her friends and most people she has met. It is, as far as she is concerned, a well-known fact that she dresses better, sings better, and dances better than most people in her school, too.

So is Jin justified in believing that she is better than everyone else? __28__ Of course, she thinks this is because the singing coach hates her, since the coach has bad skin and is jealous of her. She is good at sports, but she isn’t the strongest, fastest, or even the best at any of their school’s events. __29__ She, again thinks it was because of the "haters". After losing, she pretended she’d just run for fun and it was no big deal, but in fact it was a huge deal to her.

Jin definitely has the disease. The treatment is to stop being so mean and geta little modesty. __30__ She might even get rid of this disease if she tries hard enough.

A.She is too proud of herself.

B.Jin is very popular.

C.Then things might become better for her.

D.She sings well, but not well enough to be a lead singer.

FREE MASSIVE ONLINE OPEN COURSES (MOOCS)

A class with hundreds or even thousands of students might sound like a teacher's worst nightmare. But a big idea in higher education these days is Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs.

Some universities offer free, non-credit MOOCs available to anyone in the world. Others charge for courses and provide credits. The idea is still developing. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology started its first MOOC in 2012. The school plans to offer many free, non-credit courses through a project called MITx. Many Chinese universities are beginning to offer free MOOCs now too.

Nowadays, MOOCs almost cover every topic, like computer science, technology, mechanics, engineering, languages, etc.

Generally speaking, there are no formal education requirements for these free online courses. Students watch short videos. Then, they take informal, ungraded quizzes after the videos each week for certain weeks. Quizzes are part of the lecture program to keep students engaged and keep them thinking, for students to be able to check that they understood what was covered. They can repeatedly watch the videos and take the quizzes whenever they want. Students receive homework. They can join online groups to exchange questions and answers about the courses. The teachers hold virtual office hours to answer questions that the students have posted. They also present their own questions and observations.

Some supporters claimed that there are things that we can do better in the online format. We can certainly deliver high-quality education to many students at much lower cost.
