第1题

Most people would probably agree that many individual consumer adverts function on the lev
el of the daydream. By picturing quite unusually happy and glamorous people whose success in either career or sexual terms, or both, is obvious, adverts construct an imaginary world in which the reader is able to make come true those desires which remain unsatisfied in his or her everyday life.

An advert for a science fiction magazine is unusually explicit about this. In addition to the primary use value of the magazine, the reader is promised access to a wonderful universe through the product-access to other mysterious and tantalizing worlds and epochs, the realms of the imagination. When studying advertising, it is therefore unreasonable to expect readers to decipher adverts as factual statements about reality. Most adverts are just too meager in informative content and too rich in emotional suggestive detail to be read literally. If people read them literally, they would soon be forced to realize their error when the glamorous promises held out by the adverts didn't materialize.

The average consumer is not surprised that his purchase of the commodity does not redeem the promise of the advertisement, for this is what he is used to in life: The individual's pursuit of happiness and success is usually in vain. But the fantasy is his to keep; in his dream world he enjoys a "future endlessly deferred" .

The Estivalia advert company is quite explicit about the fact that advertising shows us not reality, but a fantasy; it does so by openly admitting the daydream but in a way which insists on the existence of a bridge linking daydream to reality—Estivalia, which is "for daydream believers", those who refuse to give up trying to make the hazy ideal of natural beauty and harmony come true.

If adverts function on the daydream level, it clearly becomes inadequate to merely condemn advertising for channeling readers' attention and desires towards unrealistic, paradisiacal (天堂似的) nowhere land. Advertising certainly does that, but in order for people to find it relevant, the Utopia(乌托邦)visualized in adverts must be linked to our surrounding reality by a causal connection.

The people in adverts are in most cases______.

A.glamorous

B.arrogant

C.obvious

D.sexy

听力原文:W: So what are the two main times of the day that you watch TV?

M: Well, a little around breakfast time and then it tends to be really late— eleven or even midnight—when I've finished work.

W: And what sort of programs do you go for?

M: Some news bulletins but I also really like to put my feet up with some of the old comedy shows.

W: Fine. And turning to the new channel...which type of programs would you like to see more of?

M: Well, I certainly don't think we need any more factual programs like news and documentaries. I think we need more about things like local in formation...you know, providing a service for the community. And in the same vein, perhaps more for younger viewers...you know, good quality stuff.

W: Ah ha. And if you had to give the new directors some specific advice when they set up the channel, what advice would you give theme

M: I think I'd advice them to pay more attention to the quality of the actual broadcast, you know, the sound system. They ought to do lots more of these kinds of interview, you know, talking with their potential customers.

W: Oh, I'm glad you think it's valuable!

M: Certainly...yeah.

W: Good. Ok, this will be a commercial channel of course, but how often do you think it is tolerable to have adverts?

M: Well out of that list I'd say every quarter of an hour. I don't think we can complain about that, as long as they don't last for ten minutes each time!

W: Quite. And…would you be willing to attend any of our special promotions for the new channel?

M: Yes, I'd be very happy to, as long as they're held here in my area.

W: Thank you very much for your time.

第一组

Older loop scavenged engines may have a single injector mounted centrally in the cylinder head. Because the exhaust valve is in the center of the cylinder head on modern uniflow scavenged engines the fuel valves (2 or 3) are arranged around the periphery of the head. The pressure at which the injector operates can be adjusted by adjusting the loading on the spring. The pressures at which the injectors operate vary depending on the engine, but can be as high as 540 bar. Some injectors have internal cooling passages in them extending into the nozzle through which cooling water is circulated. This is to prevent overheating and burning of the nozzle tip. Injectors on modern engines do not have internal cooling passages. They are cooled by a combination of the intensive bore cooling in the cylinder head being close to the valve pockets and by the fuel which is re-circulated through the injector when the follower is on the base of the cam or when the engine is stopped. As well as cooling the injector, re-circulating the fuel when the engine is stopped keeps the fuel at the correct viscosity for injection by preventing it from cooling down. Fuel injectors must be kept in good condition to maintain optimum efficiency, and to prevent conditions arising which could lead to damage within the cylinder. Injectors should be changed in line with manufacturers&39; recommendations, overhauled and tested. Springs can weaken with repeated operation leading to the injector opening at a lower pressure than designed. The needle valve and seat can wear which together with worn nozzle holes will lead to incorrect atomization and dribbling.

Modern uniflow scavenged engines have______.

A.a single injector mounted in the center of the cylinder head

B.several injectors mounted around the external boundary of the cylinder head

C.a single injector mounted at the external boundary of the cylinder head

D.several injectors mounted in the center of the cylinder head

第二组

Displacement pumps are those where the volume of the pump chamber is alternately increased to draw the liquid in from the suction pipe and then decreased to force the liquid out into the delivery pipe. Centrifugal pumps are those wherein an impeller rotating at high speed throws the liquid by centrifugal force from the center to the periphery of the impeller where the liquid is discharged through the delivery outlet.

Gear pump consists of two or more meshing gears (spur, single or double helical teeth) enclosed m a close-fitted housing. These are used extensively for pumping fuel oil, lubricating oil and hydraulic oil. When gears are unmeshed on the inlet side, a pressure drop occurs that helps the atmospheric pressure acting on the surface of the oil in the reservoir to force it up the pipe to fill the void, the oil is then transferred around the periphery of the pump housing. As the gear teeth mesh again on the outlet side, they form. a seal that prevents oil from backing up to the inlet, the oil in the void is then be forced out into the discharge line.

All vane pumps have a rotor driven within a ring (cam ring) by a drive shaft coupled to a prime mover. A cylindrical rotor with sliding vanes, generally in radial slots, rotates within the ring. The center of the rotor is offset from the center of the ring. In a simple vane pump, as the rotor turns, the vanes are forced outward against the inner surface of the cam ring by centrifugal force. This outward radial movement of the vanes and turning of the rotor causes the chamber between the vanes to increase as the vanes pass further away from the inlet port. This increase in volume results in a lowering of pressure until the atmospheric pressure is sufficient to force oil from the reservoir into the inlet chamber. Oil from the inlet is swept away by the vanes toward the outlet port through a decreasing series of chambers until it is forced through the outlet port. A vane pump of balanced design has an elliptical cam ring so that two pumping chambers are formed. This pump is in hydraulically balance, since the two intake and two outlet ports are diametrically opposed to each other. Therefore the side loads exerted on the rotor cancel out, thereby increasing bearing lift and permitting high operating pressure.

According to the last sentence of paragraph 1, from where the liquid is discharged through the delivery outlet?

A.from the eye of the impeller

B.from passage of impeller

C.from the periphery of the impeller

D.from the impeller

I once knew a dog named Newton who had a unique sense of humour. Whenever I tossed out a Frisbee for him to chase, he’d take off in hot pursuit but then seem to lose track of it. Moving back and forth only a yard of two from the toy, Newton would look all around, even up into the trees. He seemed genuinely puzzled. Finally,I’d give up and head into the field to help him out. But no sooner would I get within 10 ft. Of him than he would run invariably straight over to the Frisbee, grab it and start running like mad, looking over his shoulder with what looked suspiciously like a grin.Just about every pet owner has a story like this and is eager to share it with anyone who will listen. On very short notice, TIME reporters cam up with 25 stories about what each is convinced is the smartest pet in the world. Among them: the cat who closes the door behind him when he goes into the bathroom; the cat who uses a toilet instead of a litter box... and flushes it afterward; the dog who goes wild when he sees his owner putting on blue jeans instead of a dress because jeans mean

it is time to play; and the cat who used to wait patiently at the bus stop every

day for a little girl, then walk her the six blocks home. And so on.

These behaviors are certainly clever, but what do they mean? Was Newton really

deceiving? Can a cat really desire privacy in the toilet? In short, do household

pets really have a mental and emotional life? Their owners think so, but until

recently, animal-behaviour exports would have gone mad on hearing such a question.

The worst sin in the worst sin in their moral vocabulary was anthropomorphism,

projecting human traits onto animals. A dog or a cat might behave as if it were

angry, lonely, sad, happy or confused, but that was only in the eye of the viewer.

What was going on, they insisted was that the dog or cat had been conditioned, through a perhaps unintentional series of punishments and rewards, the behave certain way.

The behaviour was a mechanical result of the training.

1. What did Newton seem puzzled about?

2. Why does the author say Newton had unique sense of humour?

3. What made it possible for the TIME reporters to come up with so many interesting stories about pets?

4.What belief about pet behaviour was unacceptable to experts of animal behaviour?

5. What is the explanation of animal-behaviour experts for the “clever” behaviour of pets?
