Many people believe that cloning represents man’s attempt to “play God” and want to see it banneD.There are also many people who say that cloning research involving other animals should be banned as well. One scientist who doesn’t go along with this point of view is Michael Archer, who supports a proposed project to try to bring back the Tasmanian tiger that no longer exists. He believes people kill off all of the Tasmanian tigers, but through cloning the mistake could be corrected. Before the 1800s, this animal could be found all across AustraliA.But when settlers from Europe came to Australia, they found that Australia was a very good place to raise sheep. Unfortunately, many of these sheep were killed by Tasmanian tigers, so people began to hunt the tigers. In 1936, the last known Tasmanian tiger died in a zoo in TasmaniA.Since then, no evidence of any living Tasmanian tigers in the wild has been found. The only currently living cloned animals came from experiments on living species. In these experiments, the eggs that grew into the cloned animals developed inside host mother of that same species. But since there are no living female Tasmanian tigers to act as mothers, a different species would need to act as the host mother. Researchers need to learn a lot more about the possibilities of this process before any extinct species can be cloned.A surprising discovery was made in 2001. A jar containing a preserved baby Tasmanian tiger was found in the Australian Museum. The jar had been sitting in the museum since 1866! Luckily, it had been preserved in alcohol rather than another kind of preservative. The alcohol did not destroy its DNA, so that gave researchers the idea to try to use its genes to clone a Tasmanian tiger. There was a breakthrough in 2002 when scientists managed to make duplicates of sample genes from that baby tiger – the first step toward reproducing the full DNA of the animal.“What Professor Michale Archer and his team are attempting is as scientifically exciting and technically challenging as splitting the atom or landing a man on the moon,” said Maurice Paleau, the producer of a television documentary on the cloning efforts.

“It’s certainly new territory, especially as home security cameras become easier to install, “says Lizzie Post, president of the Emily Post Institute, America’s foremost manners advisors.” I think it will be very interesting to see what etiquette(礼仪)emerges in terms of whether you tell people you have a camera or not, and whether guests have a right to ask that it be turned off, if it’s not a security issue.”
Post wants to make clear that she’s not talking about legal rights, but rather personal preferences. She also wants to explain that there are no right or wrong answers regarding manners on this front yet, because the technology is just now becoming mainstream. Besides, the Emily Post Institute doesn’t dictate manners.
When it comes to security cameras, Post says it’s a host’s responsibility to make sure guests feel comfortable within their home. “I’m always a fan of being open and honest.” For instance, if the host casually acknowledges that there is a camera in the room by telling a story about it, which may be enough to provide an opening for a guest to say if they are uncomfortable.
However, if a contractor is working in your home, you don’t need to tell them that there are cameras watching. Then again, the air of accountability that the camera generates can also work in contractors’ favor. “If anything does go wrong while they’re in the house, they don’t want to be blamed for it,” she says. “In fact, the camera could be the thing that proves that they didn’t steal the $20, or knock the vase off the table.”
1.For what reason may your friends feel reluctant to visit your home?
A.The security camera installed may intrude into their privacy.
B.They don’t want their photos to be circulated on the Internet.
C.The security camera may turn out to be harmful to their health.
D.They may not be willing to interact with your family members.
2.What does Lizzie Post say is new territory?
A.The effect of manners advice on the public.
B.Cost of applying new technologies at home.
C.The increasing use of home security devices.
D.Etiquette around home security cameras.
3.What is Lizzie Post mainly discussing with regard to the use of home security cameras?
A.Legal rights.
B.Moral issues.
C.Likes and dislikes of individuals.
D.The possible impact on manners.
4.What is a host’s responsibility regarding security cameras, according to Lizzie Post?
A.Making their guests feel at ease.
B.Indicating where they are.
C.Turning them off in time.
D.Ensuring their guests’ privacy.
5.In what way can the home security camera benefit visitors to your home?
A.It can satisfy their curiosity.
B.It can prove their innocence.
C.It can help them learn new technology.
D.It can make their visit more enjoyable.

In talking about advertising, one should not think only in terms of a commercial on television, or an advertisement in the newspapers or periodicals. In its widest sense, advertising includes a host of other activities such as packaging, shop displays and—in the sense of communication—even the spoken word of the salesman. After ail, the resources of advertising are to be found in the market place.
For many years it was considered that it was enough to produce goods and supply services. It is only more recently that it has become increasingly understood that the manufacture of goods is a waste of resources unless those goods can be sold at a fair price within a reasonable time span. In the competitive society in which we live, it is important that we go out and sell what we have, and advertising plays an important role in this aspect, whether selling at home or in export markets.
About two percent of the UK gross national product is relied on advertising. But it must not be thought that this advertising tries to sell goods to consumers who do not want them. Certainly, advertising does try to attract the interest of the potential consumer, but if the article when purchased dries not match up to the standards that the advertising suggests that it will, it is obviously exceedingly unlikely that the article will sell well.
According to the text advertising is important to ______.
A.every potential consumer in the world
B.large countries in the world
C.people with a high standard of living
D.a large number of people in the world
