Passage Four

Most people do not think of fishes and other sea animals as having voices, and of those who are aware of the fact that many of them can "speak", few understand that these "conversations" have significance. Actually, their talk may be as meaningful as much of our own. For example, some sea animals use their "voices" to locate their food in the ocean expanses (广阔的区域); others use their "voices" to let their fellows know of their locations; and still others, as a means of obtaining mates. Sometimes, "speaking" may even mean the difference between life and death to a sea animal. It appears in some cases that when a predator (食肉动物) approaches, the prey (被捕的动物) depends on no more than the sounds it makes to escape.

Fish sounds are important to man, also. By listening to them, he can learn a great deal about he habits of creatures that make them, the size of the School they form, the patterns of their migrations, and the nature of the environments in which they live. He can also apply this nformation to the more effective utilization of the listening spots he has set up to detect enemy submarines (潜水艇). A knowledge of fish sounds can avoid confusion and unneeded effort when a "new" sound is picked up and the sound sentry (哨兵) must decide whether or not to call an alarm.

46. Among the people who know that many sea animals have voices, few ______.

A. know the meaning of their conversations

B. realize that they can communicate with each other

C. realize that they can make speeches

D. could understand their conversations

A lawyer friend of mine has devoted herself to the service of humanity. Her special area
is called "public interest law" (公共利益法 ).

Many other lawyers serve only clients who can pay high fees. All lawyers have had expensive and highly specialized training, and they work long, difficult hours for the money they get. But what happens to people who need legal (法律上的) help and cannot pay these lawyers' fees?

Public interest lawyers fill this need. Patricia, like other public interest lawyers, gets less money than some lawyers, because she is willing to take less money. Her clients have the help they need, even if they can pay nothing at all.

Some clients need legal help because stores have cheated them with bad goods. Others are in unsafe houses. Their cases are called "civil" cases. Still others are criminals (刑事犯罪), and they go to those public interest lawyers who are in charge of "criminal" cases.

These are just a few of the many situations in which the men and women who are public interest lawyers serve to extend justice throughout our society.

第7题

As protector of her family’s health, the poineer woman confronted situations she never ima
gined before crossing the Mississippi. Few women came West prepared to deal with desert sunburn, rattlesnake bites, or arrow wounds. Even when doctors were available, they were often no more knowledgeable than their patients. And most patent (专利) medicines were no more reliable than the itinerant (巡游) merchants who sold them.

In certain cases, a woman could draw upon the folk wisdom and remedies she had learned back home; Western mosquitoes, for example, proved to be as repelled by a paste of vinegar and salt as were their Eastern cousins. More often, however, a woman was guided only by her own ingenuity in concocting (调制的) tonics (补药), powders, poisons, and polishes from whatever she had at land: salt made a passable toothpaste, gunpowder was applied to wants, and turpentine to open cuts, goose grease, skunk oil, and the ever present lard were basic liniments; medicinal teas and tonics were brewed from sunflower seeds and roots.

Which of the following statements best expresses the main idea of the passage? ()

A.Many people who went West were doctors.

B.Medicine and the people who sold it were not reliable.

C.Many pioneer women died from bites inflicted by snakes and mosquitoes.

D.Pioneer women had to invent their own remedies when they moved West.

Scattered around the globe are more than 100 small regions of isolated volcanic activity k
nown to geologists as hot spots, unlike most of the world's volcanoes, they are not always found at the boundaries of the great drifting plates that make up the earth's surface; on the contrary, many of them lie deep in the interior of a plate. Most of the hot spots move only slowly, and in some cases the movement of the plates past them has left trails of dead volcanoes. The hot spots and their volcanic trails are milestones that mark the passage of the plates.

That the plates are moving is now beyond dispute. Africa and South America, for example, are moving away from each other as new material is injected into the sea floor between them. The complementary coastlines and certain geological features that seem to span the ocean are reminders of where the two continents were once joined. The relative motion of the plates carrying these continents has been constructed in detail, but the motion of one plate with respect to another cannot readily be translated into motion with respect to the earth's interior. It is not possible to determine whether both continents are moving in opposite directions or whether one continent is stationary and the other is drifting away from it. Hot spots, anchored in the deeper layers of the earth, provide the measuring instruments needed to resolve the question. From an analysis of the hot spot population it appears that the African plate is stationary and that it has not moved during the past 30 mil lion years.

The significance of hot spots is not confined to their role as a frame. of reference. It now appears that they also have an important influence on the geophysical processes that propel the plates across the globe. When a continental plate comes to rest over a hot spot, the material rising from deeper layer creates a broad dome. As the dome grows, it develops deed fissures (cracks); in at least a few cases the continent may break entirely along some of these fissures, so that the hot spot initiates the formation of a new ocean. Thus just as earlier theories have explained the mobility of the continents, so hot spots may explain their mutability (inconstancy).

The author believes that ______.

A.the motion of the plates corresponds to that of the earth's interior

B.the geological theory about drifting plates has been proved to be truse

C.the hot spots and the plates move slowly in opposite directions

D.the movement of hot spots proves the continents are moving apart
