Passage 2

It is natural for young people to be critical of their parents at times and to blame them for most of the misunderstandings between them. They have always complained, more or less justly, that their parents are out of touch with modern ways; that they are possessive and dominant; that they do not trust their children to deal with crises; that they talk too much about certain problems—and that they have no sense of humor, at least in parent-child relationships.

I think it is true that parents often misunderstand their teenage children and also forget how they themselves felt when young.

Young people often anger their parents with their choices in clothes and hairstyles, in entertainers and music. This is not their intention. They feel cut off from the adult world into which they have not yet been accepted. So they create a culture and society of their own. Then, if it turns out that their music or entertainers or vocabulary or clothes or hairstyles anger their parents, this gives them additional enjoyment. They feel they are superior, at least in a small way, and that they are leaders in style. and taste.

Sometimes you are resistant and proud because you do not want your parents to approve of what you do. If they do approve, it looks as if you are betraying your own age group. But in that case, you are assuming that you are the underdog: you can’t win but at least you can keep your honor. This is a passive way of looking at things. It is natural enough after long years of childhood, when you were completely under your parents’ control. But this way of looking at things ignores the fact that you are now beginning to be responsible for yourself. If you plan to control your life, co-operation can be part of that plan. You can charm others, especially your parents, into doing things the way you want. You can impress others with your sense of responsibility and initiative, so that they will give you the authority to do what you want to do.

26. The author is primarily addressing _______.

A. teachers

B. teenagers

C. parents

D. authorities

Eating out is one of the joys being in the USA) The food is usually good and often exc
ellent; the prices are reasonable; and the service is mostly fine.

Choosing a Restaurant

Some restaurants are open for breakfast; others are open twenty-four hours a day. A number of restaurants call themselves “family restaurants”. Many of these serve no alcohol and have fairly restricted menus which include steaks, hamburgers, omelets and sandwiches, and all are at very reasonable prices. They may also serve smaller and cheaper children’s portions. Note that many American restaurants are “specialty” restaurants. They may serve only, or mainly, steaks, sea food, etc.

When to Eat

Many restaurants, especially the more expensive ones, open at about 11:30 a.m. (midday, rather than 1 p.m., is the most normal time for lunch in the USA), and some remain open until the evening, so it is possible to order a meal throughout the afternoon. In many areas, it is usual for people to leave work and go out for an evening male at 5 p.m. or 6 p.m., rather than waiting until later.

Reserving a Table

Eating out is rather popular in the USA, and it is often necessary to make a reservation. You will sometimes see short lines of people waiting for tables at restaurants- it is more pleasant to wait in the bar, of course, if there is one- but in fact the lines move very quickly.

Arriving at the Restaurant

When you arrive at most restaurants, you should not just go in and sit down- unless you see a sign, saying “Please seat yourself”. Usually you will have to wait for a “host” or “hostess” to lead you to a table. Often there will be a sign that reads, “Please wait to be seated”. Do not expect to share a table with other parties, even if the restaurant is crowded. It is just not done.

1.In most family restaurants, you can order many kinds of food except()

A.hamburgers

B.sandwiches

C.alcohol

D.steaks

2.“Specialty” restaurants in Para.2 refer to those restaurants that ________.

A.are special for some special customers

B.serve only, or mainly excellent food

C.are not ordinary

D.serve only, or mainly one kind of food

B.You will not have your breakfast until 11:30 in American restaurants

C.You’d better reserve a table if you do not want to wait at restaurants when eating out

D.It is impossible to order a meal in the afternoon in the USA

A.Do not share a table with others

B.Do not stand in the way

Do you forget to turn off the lights and heaters when you go out of a room? In 2040 it will not matter. They will turn themselves off—and on again when you return. A sensor will detect the presence of a human and turn the systems on, and when the humans leave, it will turn them off again.

The sensors will work through the central home computer, and they will do much more than just turn the fires and lights on and off for you. They will detect faulty electrical appliances, isolate them so that they cannot harm anyone, and then warn you that they need repair. They will detect fire and if you are out of the house, the computer will call the firemen. It will also call the police should the sensors detect an intruder. You will open the door using your personal card—the one you use for shopping—maybe using a number known only to you.

请根据短文的内容,回答题。

Are You a Successful Leader?

(1) Almost nothing we do in this world is done in isolation. At work or at play, you&39;ll find yourself in groups, working with other people: your team at work, a meeting with colleagues, your family, a holiday with friends, a group of students working together, a day out walking in the mountains, a group of neighbors wanting to make changes. It is now recognized that being able to work successfully with other people is one of the major keys to success, partly because we need to do it so often.
(2) In almost every situation where you&39;re in a group, you will need a skilled leader. All groups need leaders and all successful groups have good leaders. Groups without leaders or with weak leaders almost always break down. Members of a leaderless group often begin to feel dissatisfied and frustrated. Time is wasted and the tasks are not achieved. There are often arguments and tensions between people as there is nobody to keep the goals clear. Some personalities dominate and others disappear. Often group members begin not to come to meetings in order to avoid more disharmonies.
(3) Some people are natural leaders. The celebrity chef, Antonio Carluccio says, "true leaders are born and you can spot them in kitchens." They&39;re people who combine toughness, fairness and humor. Although a lot of people agree that there are some natural-born leaders, most people now recognize that leadership can also be taught. Our professional and experienced staff can train almost anyone how to be a successful leader. Good leaders don&39;t make people do things in a bossy, controlling way. You can learn how to involve everyone, encouraging the whole group to work towards a common goal.
(4) Our training courses use activities and techniques to develop a range of qualities which are necessary to be a good leader. Self-confidence is vital for you to overcome your own fears about being a leader. Successful leaders also need to be calm and intelligent. They need to be able to work out good strategies and make sound judgments under pressure. Lastly, and probably most importantly, good leaders need to be sensitive, sociable and be able to get on with a wide range of people. Good leadership is essentially the ability to influence others and good leaders allow all members of the group to contribute.

A.Most of good leaders are natural-bom.

C.People are in groups.

D.These techniques are used to train leaders.

E.Training can make good leaders.
