Even if the word ‘pop’ disappears from the English vocabulary, the influence of pop wi
ll remain. Pop has become part of British and American history. There has always been a close cultural link, or tie, between Britain and English-speaking America, not only in literature but also in popular arts, especially music. Before the Second World War the Americans exported jazz and the blues. During the 1950s they exported rock ’n’ roll, and star singers like Elvis Presley were admired by young British and Americans alike. Then in the early 1960s a new sound was heard, very different from anything which had so far come from the American side of the Atlantic. This was the Liverpool, or Merseyside, ‘beat’. The new pop culture, in a few years, swept across Britain and America, and across most of the countries of the western world. The people responsible for the pop revolution were four Liverpool boys who joined together in a group and called themselves The Beatles. They played in small clubs in the back streets of the city. Unlike the famous solo stars, who had their songs written for them, the Beatles wrote their own words and music. They had a close personal relationship with their audience, and they expected them to join in and dance to the ‘beat’ of the music. Audience participation is an essential characteristic of pop culture. Some pop groups, in particular the Rolling Stones, did more than just entertain. They wrote words which were deliberately intended to shock. They represented the anger and bitterness of youth struggling for freedom against authority. The Beatles, on the other hand, finally won the admiration of people. As they developed, their songs became more serious. They wrote not only of love, but of death and poverty and daily life. Largely thanks to the Beatles, pop music had grown into a big and profitable industry. The influence of British pop in America was great. American pop groups soon became as famous as British groups. Both the British and Americans are experimenting with new ideas, and pop is developing and changing, and mixing with modern folk music.

Within a large concrete room, cut out of a mountain on a freezing-cold island just 1,000 k
ilometers from the North Pole, could lie the future of humanity.

The room is a vault (地下库) designed to hold around 2 million seeds, representing all known varieties of the world's crops. It is being built to safeguard the world's food supply against nuclear war, climate change, terrorism, rising sea levels, earthquakes and the collapse of electricity supplies. "If the worst came to the worst, this would allow the world to reconstruct agriculture on this planet," says Cary Fowler, director of the Global Crop Diversity Trust, an independent international organization promoting the project.

The Norwegian (挪威的) government is planning to create the seed bank next year at the request of crop scientists. The $3 million vault will be built deep inside a sandstone mountain on the Norwegian Arctic island of Spitsbergen. The vault will have metre-thick walls of reinforced concrete and will be protected behind two airlocks and high-security doors.

The vault's seed collection will represent the products of some 10, 000 years of plant breeding by the world's farmers. Though most are no longer widely planted, the varieties contain vital genetic properties still regularly used in plant breeding.

To survive, the seeds need freezing temperatures. Operators plan to replace the air inside the vault each winter, when temperatures in Spitsbergen are around -18℃. But even if some disaster meant that the vault was abandoned, the permanently frozen soil would keep the seeds alive. And even accelerated global warming would take many decades to penetrate the mountain vault.

"This will be the world's most secure gene bank," says Fowler. "But. its seeds will only be used when all other samples have gone for some reason."

The project comes at a time when there is growing concern about the safety of existing seed banks around the world. Many have been criticized for their poor security, ageing refrigeration (冷藏) systems and vulnerable electricity supplies.

The scheme won UN approval at a meeting of the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome in October 2005. A feasibility study said the facility "would essentially be built to last forever".

The Norwegian vault is important in that ______.

A.the seeds in it represent the rarest varieties of world's crops

B.the seeds in it could revive agriculture if the worst thing should happen

C.it is built deep in a mountain on a freezing-cold Arctic island.

D.it is strong enough against all disasters caused by man and nature

People feel that they have to work, the ethics is deeply fixed. They identify with their j
obs and if they lose them, both the identities and feelings of usefulness go. This is in addition to the financial penalty of being jobless. The market may theoretically distribute resources in a favorable manner, though in reality this is not true. What is true, however, is that it is a hard and at times cruel taskmaster.

If, by and large, we are to make the best use of microelectronics, planning at all levels is necessary so as to prevent the worst signs. Employers and unions must talk over Technology Agreement which will cover the speed, method operation, training and retraining needs associated with new processes and in which the maximum of advanced in formation is vital. Government as an employer is not freed from this procedure. Risk capital needs to be made available for new enterprises—the structure of capital markets in the United Kingdom provides (and can provide) very little. We have far too few qualified analysts or micro-electronic experts and are still training far too few.

The most important point, however, concerns works or the lack of it. As unemployment rises and as the chance of getting another job correspondingly diminishes, in present circumstances, the resistance to redundancy will rise, and quite understandably so. If people made redundant today represent an investment for an uncertain future then they must not be penalized—we encourage normal investment through grants and tax allowances, why not for people too? Unions will almost certainly bargain for productivity payments to be applied to those who have been sacrificed so as to get the increased productivity and to minimize those sacrifices.

In longer terms, however, it is clear that the old attitudes to work will have to change. Leisure must be viewed as being important to human development as work itself. This involves changes in our primary and secondary school systems and provision of life-long education schemes. It is also the ideal opportunity to improve the services which have a person-to-person contact like health, social services, for example, to the disabled. In short, the next decade could see a take-off into a more caring society in which opportunities exist but the penalties for failure are lessened. This involves a reevaluation of public expenditure and what it is for; a reevaluation of work itself and a reevaluation of our political decision-making processes. While all this possible, it is also possible to drift in the opposite direction, towards an inhuman totalitarian regime where profit is the only belief. The choice is ours. We must not fail our children.

According to the author, to take full advantage of microelectronics, we must try to______.

A.reduce unemployment

B.preclude the most serious negative potentialities

C.increase our energy production

D.control both the unions and employers
