m does not look like the food you eat. Some food is carried in closed bags. It is cooked and frozen before the astronauts get it. All the water is removed from the food. In the spaceship the astronaut puts the water back. He "shoots" hot or cold water into the food bag with a special gun. He eats the food through a small hole in the bag.

Other foods come in bite size. The astronaut puts a whole piece in his mouth at once. There can be no crumbs. Crumbs would float around the spaceship and get in the way. Meat and cake often come in bite-sixed pieces. Astronauts can' t drink water from open cups. The water would float in drops in the air. The water is put in the special gun. The astronaut shoots the water into his mouth. Eating in space is not easy. Astronauts must learn this way.

Some space foods are carded in ______ .

A.water guns

B.lunch boxes

阅读材料,回答题。

Another thing an astronaut has to learn about is eating in space. Food is weightless, just as men are.

Food for space has to be packed in special ways. Some of it goes into tubes that a man can squeeze into his mouth. Bite sized cookies are packed in plastic.

There is a good reason for covering each bite. The plastic keeps pieces of food from travelling in the spaceship. On the earth very small pieces of food would simply fall to the floor. But gravity doesn’t pull them to the floor when they are out of the plastic in a spaceship. They move here and there and can get into a man’s eyes or into the spaceship’s instruments. If any of the instruments is blocked, the astronauts may have trouble getting safely home.

As astronauts travel on longer space trips, he must take time to sleep. An astronaut can fit himself to his seat with a kind of seat belt. Or, if he wants to, he can sleep in a sleeping bag which is fixed in place under his seat. But be careful he must put his hands under the belt when he goes to sleep. This is because he is really afraid that he might touch one of controls that isn’t supposed to be touched until later.

Why would astronauts cover each bite of food in space? 查看材料

A.Because small pieces of food would fall down to the floor

B.Because weightless pieces of food might make trouble when they travel around

C.Because they haven’t enough food for longer trips

D.Because astronauts don’t want to waste food

Every second in the United States alone, more than 250 animals are slaughtered for food, a
dding up to more than 8 billion animals each year. Reducing the amount of meat in one's diet is nutritionally, environmentally, and ethically beneficial.

People who eat meat usually have weaker immune systems compared to those of vegetarians. Meat has been directly linked to diabetes, obesity, arthritis, and many other illnesses. Furthermore, meat-esters are at a higher risk for diseases, including cancer, and they are more likely to die from these diseases. Critics say that a meatless diet does not provide enough nutrients, especially protein and iron. Actually, according to A Teen's Guide to Going Vegetarian, by Judy Krizmanic, protein is found in almost every food, and iron appears in many vegetables. Getting enough nutrients in a meat-reduced diet should not be difficult. A 1988study found that some of the highest pesticide residues appear in meat and eggs. Diets including more fruits and vegetables will only make people healthier.

Some skeptics believe that there will be a shortage of food if animals are not eaten. In fact, the opposite is true. More than 80% of the corn and 95% of the oats grown in the U.S. are fed to livestock. The world's cattle alone consume enough food to equal the caloric needs of 8.7 billion people, more than the entire human population. One half of the water used in the Unites States also goes to livestock; 2,50 gallons of water produces only 1 lb. of beef. If people eat less meat and more plants, the amount of available food will increase.

Many people become vegetarians because they feel that eating animals is unethical. 90% of these animals are raised in confinement. Chickens and other birds have only about half a square foot of space each, and since they are raised so close together, a lot blade is used to cut off their beaks to prevent them from pecking each other to death. Likewise, pigs that are repressed will bite each other's tails, so both their teeth and tails are removed as soon as they are born.

Eating animals is hazardous in numerous ways. Even a slight reduction in meat intake is better than nothing at all. Consuming less meat is beneficial to the health of animals, the health of people, and to the health of the world.

Why do some people become vegetarians?

A.They feel that eating animals is Unethical.

B.There are fewer livestock available due to the environmental pollution.

C.The consumption of meat will lead to financial problem.

D.Being a vegetarian is beneficial to the protection of water.

Passage One UNIT 1 Slung over Pen Keo's shoulder is a big wicker basket containing wire-mesh traps, which he lays, one by one,on a rice field where rats are known to scamper. There are so many traps there already, and it is difficult to find space for his.In Takéo,a rural province in southern Cambodia,rat-catching serves two purposes. The creatures would otherwise ravage(毁坏)crops, and can also be sold for tidy sums in neighbouring Vietnam. There rats nourished on a free-range diet of rice stalks and roots are a well-known delicacy served in Vietnamese restaurants. For a growing number of Cambodians,rat-catching is a full-time job.The covid-19 pandemic has hurt the formal economy.Unemployment is on the rise. The Asian Development Bank thinks that Cambodia, with a working-age population of 9 million or so,lost around 500,000 jobs in 2020.Many who worked in the city have gone home to the countryside, but work there is scarce, too.Between January and April, farmers'wages dropped by a third, according to Angkor Research and Consulting and Future Forum,a think-tank.Mr.Pen Keo says he no longer earns enough from tilling his fields because rice is too cheap.Like many hard-up Cambodians,he has exchanged his plough (犁) for rat-traps.Yet chasing tail, too,is no longer as profitable as it was.On a good day,Mr.Pen Keo catches 15 kg or about 130 of the pests. But whereas he used to get 6,000 riel ($1.48) for every kilo he caught, now he makes two-thirds of that. The slump in prices is being felt further along the supply chain as well.Ton,a rat-broker from Bourei Cholsar, the same district as Mr.Per Keo,now earns 50,000 riel a day, half what used to get.Mr.Pen complains of too much competition.Since April the number of rat-catchers in his village of 50 has doubled to 100,he says. The headman of the group of villages to which Bourei Cholsar belongs reckons that a third of locals now trap rodents.Even as the supply of Cambodian rats has shot up,demand from Vietnam has tailed off.Officially, the border has been closed since March, making it harder to take the rats to market.Brokers have to pay off Vietnamese border guards and smuggle their catch across a river, risking fines and imprisonment.Another Cambodian catcher,Chhoeun Kha,suspects the pandemic has made Vietnamese less enthusiastic about eating rats, for fear they harbour diseases. It is not an absurd concern.A study conducted a couple of years ago in southern Vietnam found that 56% of field rats served in restaurants tested positive for a raft of coronaviruses.(Source:The Economist)
