What gets in the way of accurate listening? When we're worried about what we're hearing or might hear next or what we might have to do about what we hear, we may very well receive a【C9】______ message.【C10】______ that we will have to "fix it" or "control it" causes us to listen with "filters". We may want to express our own point of view. We may also want to avoid being【C11】______ or being drawn into a conflict, so we【C12】______ . what we hear, because we're already thinking about what we'll say next. It then becomes impossible to hear the speaker's true meaning. Clearly in our workplaces, families and friendship, if we【C13】______ what we think we heard instead of what was actually said, the【C14】______ of the message we received will result in responses that aren't【C15】______ . On the other side, if others don't hear us accurately, we won't feel valued.
If you want to connect with others and take appropriate actions, you must learn to listen with curiosity, empathy and a deep appreciation for the feelings, reality and creativity of another. You need to ask for【C16】______ and not【C17】______ conclusions. You need to pay close attention and "mirror" back what you hear rather than listening【C18】______ while thinking of other things or listening through filters,【C19】______ or expectations that limit or distort the message's【C20】______ meaning. We build trust when others know we understand and value them.

(英译汉)One reason for discussing listening here is because of concerns expressed by people attending assertiveness courses, many of whom are helped by improving their listening skills. For example, non-assertive people who are shy often find it difficult to begin conversations with others, especially on social occasions when they feel they have no aptitude for small talks.
Many people find it relatively easy to communicate on a professional level, on which the content of conversation is technical, technological or business oriented, but have difficulty in stepping from behind their desks and chatting with superiors, co-workers, clients and customers on a more personal level. On training courses participants previously unknown to each other will soon talk together about work-related issues --- common objectives --- but some keep silent during refreshment breaks where social chitchat is required.
Concentrating on others ---finding out their experiences, beliefs and attitudes --- is the way forward. Active listening can really help you know more about them and establish a basis for solid communication.

The skill to anticipate what is coming in listening comprehension depends largely on the listener&39;s familiarity with the theme(主题)of the message. It also depends on the listener&39;s knowledge of the speaker as well as the situation.
Obviously, when we listen to something that we already have some information about, it is generally much easier for us to take in the new information .Therefore,pre-listening preparation seems to play an important role in increasing our comprehension .Before actual listening ,we could perhaps first give some thought to the topic ,discuss it with others ,and then read some related material and do some vocabulary work. If we could make ourselves fully prepared for the coming talks or lectures,we are more likely to become effective listeners.
Of course, readiness beforehand is not at all enough .Active thinking must take place all the way through .In fact ,we should always try to think ahead of the speaker.

Passage Four
Most people do not think of fishes and other sea animals as having voices, and of those who are aware of the fact that many of them can "speak", few understand that these "conversations" have significance. Actually, their talk may be as meaningful as much of our own. For example, some sea animals use their "voices" to locate their food in the ocean expanses (广阔的区域); others use their "voices" to let their fellows know of their locations; and still others, as a means of obtaining mates. Sometimes, "speaking" may even mean the difference between life and death to a sea animal. It appears in some cases that when a predator (食肉动物) approaches, the prey (被捕的动物) depends on no more than the sounds it makes to escape.
Fish sounds are important to man, also. By listening to them, he can learn a great deal about he habits of creatures that make them, the size of the School they form, the patterns of their migrations, and the nature of the environments in which they live. He can also apply this nformation to the more effective utilization of the listening spots he has set up to detect enemy submarines (潜水艇). A knowledge of fish sounds can avoid confusion and unneeded effort when a "new" sound is picked up and the sound sentry (哨兵) must decide whether or not to call an alarm.
46. Among the people who know that many sea animals have voices, few ______.
A. know the meaning of their conversations
B. realize that they can communicate with each other
C. realize that they can make speeches
D. could understand their conversations

First of all, good talkers ask questions.Almost anyone, no matter how shy he is, will answera question. And how he answers will let you know how far you can go.
Second, once good talkers have asked questions, they listen to the answers. And to find outwhat sort of person you are talking to, you really have to listen carefully and attentively.
Real listening at least means some things.First it means not to change the subject of the con-versation.Real listening also means not just listening to words but to tones of voice. If the voicesounds dull, then, it&39; s time for you to change the subject.
