A major incentive (动力) for college attendance is the belief that it will prepare you for a career. Chances are that the career you want, whether in nursing, counseling, law, or management, requires a college education. Even if the return of your education isn't as great as it used to be, you would probably rather be a relatively poorly paid lawyer than a secretary or a construction worker: you would probably rather be a manager than a managee. In the sense that a degree is increasingly required for even middle-level jobs, your investment in a college education will still pay off.
It can pay off in other ways too. It is a value judgement to say that a college education will make you a better person, but it is a value judgement that the vast majority of college graduates are willing to make survey after survey to demonstrate that people feel very positive about their college education, believing that it has made them better and more tolerant people.
Whether it makes you a better person or not, a college education is likely to have a lasting effect on your knowledge and values. If you finish college, you will sit through 30 to 45 different courses. Even the least dedicated student is bound to learn something from these courses. In addition, students learn informally. Whether you go to college in you hometown or across the country, college will introduce you to a greater diversity of people than you ' re likely to have experienced before. This diversity will challenge your mind and broaden your horizons.
As a result of formal and informal learning, college graduates are more knowledgeable about the world around them, more tolerant and less prejudiced, more active in public and community affairs, and, more open to new ideas.
It is apparent from the passage that people go to college mainly because they believe
A.a college education will provide them with a guarantee of success in life
B.the economy of their country can't absorb an army of untrained youngsters
C.a college education will make them better qualified for a career
D.the investment in a college education can bring a higher economic return than before

As soon as you are invited to attend an interview—or, better still, before you are called—start researching facts about the company. Probably, you will have done some re search before sending your letter of application. Now you need to identify additional information, such as the number of persons the company employs, specific fields in which it is involved, work for which it is particularly well known, its major products and services, places of branch offices, and the company's involvement in community activities.
You also need to prepare for different questions an interviewer may ask to test your readiness for the interview and the sincerity(诚意)of your application. You may be asked:
-Why do you want to join our organization?
-How do you think you can contribute to our company?
-Why do you want to leave your present employer?
-What salary do you expect?
If you have not prepared for such questions, and so hesitate before answering, an inter viewer may interpret your hesitation to mean you find a question difficult to answer or there are things you would rather hide. In either case, you may provide an entirely misleading impression of yourself.

听力原文: In public speaking, the watch word is preparation. Most of us tend to put things off, at least occasionally. It's so easy to put things off especially those things we do not look forward to doing. So if the speaking engagement is several weeks off, we may feel that we still have plenty of time. But as the day draws closer, we begin to panic. Don't let this happen to you. Start preparing as soon as you're given or accept the speaking assignment. You have much to do and to do it right will take time. How much better your speech will be and how much better you'll feel if you have taken the time to do it right! When you are prepared, you have gathered the needed data, determined what is appropriate to the listener's understanding and acceptance levels, organized the ideas so they flow logically, selected examples and other supports for your ideas and made them interesting to your listeners, developed a great opening that you know will capture the attention of even the daydreamers in your audience checked out the room where you'll be speaking and requested any feasible changes you wish in the set-up of the room If you are prepared, you are confident that you can best convey your message to your listeners. If you waited until a few days before your presentation to begin to prepare, or worse, yet, the day before, no doubt you'll be anxious and with good reason. And now there is not enough time to engage in more than a superficial attempt. Both you and the audience will feel uncomfortable, like retirement planning. It is never too early to start preparing for your presentation. So, start preparing right away.
