Passage One Mark went to the neighborhood meeting after work. The area's city councilwom

Passage One

Mark went to the neighborhood meeting after work. The area's city councilwoman (女议员) was leading a discussion about how the quality of life was decreasing. The neighborhood faced many problems. People were supposed to suggest solutions to the councilwoman. It was too much for Mark. "The problems are too big," he thought. He turned to the man next to him and said, "I think this is a waste of my time. Nothing I could do would make a difference here."

On his way back, Mark saw a woman carrying a grocery hag and baby. She was trying to unlock her car, but she didn't have a free hand. As Mark got closer, her other child, a little boy, suddenly darted into the street. The woman tried to reach for him, but as she moved, her bag shifted and groceries started to fall out. Mark ran to take the boy's arm and led him back to his mother. Then he picked up the groceries while the woman smiled in relief. "Thanks!" she said. "You've got great timing (适时) !"

"Just being neighborly (友好的) ," Mark said. As he rode home, he glanced at the walls of the bus passed by. On one of them was "Small acts of kindness add up." Mark smiled and thought, "Maybe that's a good place to start."

31. In the first paragraph, Mark thought that______.

A. nobody was so able as to solve these problems

B. many people were too selfish to think about others

C. he was not in the position to solve such problems

D. he already had more than enough work to do

One of the well-known of American writers is Samuel Clemens, whose pen name is Mark Twain. Bom in 1835, Twain grew up in the Mississippi River town of Hannibal, Missouri. As did many other boys of his day,

Finally Twain became a successful writer. He traveled a great deal, writing and speaking, and became very popular both in the United States and in Europe.

Last summer my friend Mark and I motored a boat up the Illinois River, pulling ashore
for gas in the small town of Havana, Ill. We began walking to the distant station with our empty five-gallon cans when we passed three construction workers taking a break. "You fellows coming from the river?" one asked.

"You bet. Gotta gas up," Mark said.

We had only gone a few feet past them when one of them hollered (叫喊)."Hey, take my truck." Then he pointed to the vehicle at the curb and tossed us the keys. The man didn't even know our names.

We did borrow the truck. We got our gas, returned the vehicle and talked a few minutes with the owner. His name was Bill Parsley, and he was the sort of friendly, open man who would tell a couple of strangers to take his truck.

Take my truck. It became like a mantra (祷文)to us. It represented the world as it should be.

This past February, as Mark and his son were driving near their home in St. Louis, they came upon a van barely moving. The problem was an exhaust system dragging on the ground. Sparks were flying.

A young woman was at the wheel, and she had a baby in a car seat. Mark stopped and offered to follow her to a gas station to make sure she got there safely. Then he drove her to a nearby mall, where he picked up her waiting husband and son, and returned them all to the gas station. Bad news awaited them: the mechanic couldn't get the van fixed until morning.

The husband thanked Mark and said he'd call a taxi. My friend lives near the gas station. "Take my car," he said, handing over the keys. The man was taken aback. "Do you even know my name?" he asked.

"Actually, I don't," said Mark. "Just bring the car back tomorrow."

After a few protestations, the family climbed into the car and drove away. Less than an hour later the grateful man, followed by his wife in the family's other car, returned Mark's vehicle.

As Mark watched the couple drive off, he felt good. He turned to his wife, Carol and said, "We just paid Bill Parsley back."

Passage 1 Falls are the number one cause of death to old people at home. Most old people can live safely at home if they make a few changes. Falls are common as people are getting older. Up to half of home accidents could be prevented by making some very simple changes. Here are a few suggestions. Mark trouble spots with bright tapes. The first and last steps on stairs are usually high-risk accident are- as. Applying bright tapes and using bright light in these areas would make these spots easier to see. Put grab bars(扶手) in the bathroom. A large number of falls occur in the bathroom. This is unfortunate(不幸的) because it's easy to make the area safe from accidents. Putting grab bars in the bathroom gives people something to hang on to. Invest in a personal alarm. A personal alarm can be started if a person falls or otherwise gets in trouble. With the push of a button, the alarm automatically sends a signal, which gets someone to call and see if the person needs help. 题目: 1. By making some very simple changes at home, old people ______.

Part II Reading Comprehension (40 points) Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by five questions or statements. Choose the best answer to each question or decide T/F for each statement. Passage One People often say that the Englishman's home is his castle. They mean that the home is very important and personal. Most people in Britain live in houses rather than flats, and many people own their homes. This means that they can make them personal, and change them in any way they like- Most houses have a garden, even if it is a small one, and the garden is usually loved. The house and the garden are the private space of a person. In a crowded city a person knows that he or she has a private space which is only for him or herself and for invited friends. People usually like to mark their space. If you are on the beach you may have spread your towels around you; on the train you may have put your coat or small bag on the seat beside you; in a library you may spread your books around you. Once I was travelling on a train to London. I was in a section for four people and there was a table between us. The man opposite to me had his briefcase on the table. There was no space on my side of the table at all. I was unhappy. I thought he thought that he owned the whole table. I had been reading a book about nonverbal communication, so I took various papers out of my bag and put them on his case! When I did this he suddenly became angry and his eyes nearly popped out of his head. I had taken up his space! A few minutes later I took my papers off in order to read them. He immediately moved his case to his side of the table.
