Passage One You've probably had the experience of having someone fall in love with you w

Passage One

You've probably had the experience of having someone fall in love with you when you didn't feel the same way. In such a case it's hard to know what to do. You don't want to be so obvious in your efforts that you make an enemy of him.

A friend of mine had this problem and handled it in the most tactful (得体的) way I've ever seen. Instead of telling her admirer directly, she devoted herself to introducing him to every girl she knew. Whenever she had a date with him, she arranged to drop in at the home of one of her girl friends. At last he clicked (一见如故) with one of these girls, and then everyone was happy. My friend was rid of a problem and she still had the young man as a friend, which was just what she wanted him to be.

Of course this solution may not work for you. You may have your own way of dealing with the problem. But whatever you decide to do, keep one thing in mind—the boy in question has feelings every bit as sensitive as your own. So try to find a way of discouraging him without hurting him.

31. The best title for this passage would be______.

A. How to Make a Friend

B. Problems of Dating

C. Good Advice for Girls

D. How to Free Yourself from an Admirer

Dad said it would be an unusual present, and he was quite right.

He said,“Go to the telephone and call a ten-figure number,it must begin with 010.Got that—010?You can please yourself about the other seven figures.”I called the number 010 3612597.A few moments later I heard a man's clear voice at the other end.The voice said,“Kikri 2597.Don Flower speaking.”

I said,“Hello,Mr.Flower.I'm Robert West, and this call to you is one of my birthday presents.I'm thirteen today——”

“Well, there may be only eighty thousand by now.I'm not too sure. There's not a lot of feed for them, you know, and two of my wells have gone dry this month. So we've been driving the sheep around a bit.If you go straight across the middle of my farm,it's a hundred and ten miles. That isn't a great size for a farm in Australia, but it's big enough for me!”

第2题

One silly question I simply can't stand is "How do you feel". Usually the
question is asked of a man in action--a man on the go, walking along the street, or busily working at his desk. So what do you expect him to say? He'll probably say, "Fine, I'm all right." But "you've put a bug in his ear" — maybe now he's not sure. If you are a good friend, you may have seen something in his face, or his walk, that he did not realize that morning. It starts him worrying a little. First thing you know, he looks in a mirror to sec if everything is all right, while you go merrily on your way asking someone else, "How do you feel?"

Every question has its time and place. It's perfectly acceptable, for instance, to ask "How do you feel?" if you're visiting a close friend in the hospital. But if the fellow is walking on both legs, hurrying to make a train, or sitting at his desk working, it's no time to ask him that silly question.

When George Bernard Shaw, the famous writer of plays was in his eighties, someone asked him "How do you feel", Shaw put him in his place. "When you reach my age", he said, "either you feel all right or you're dead."

1).According to the writer, greetings, such as "How do you feel?" _________ .

A. show one's consideration for others

B. are a good way to make friends

C. are proper to ask a man in action

D. generally make one feel uneasy

2).The question "How do you feel?" seems to be correct and suitable when asked of ________ .

A. a man working at his desk

B. a person having lost a close friend

C. a stranger who looks somewhat worried

D. a friend who is ill

3).The writer seems to feel that a busy man should _________ .

A. be praised for his efforts

B. never be asked any question

C. not be bothered

D. be discouraged from working so hard

4).George Bernard Shaw's reply in the passage shows his ________ .

A. cheerfulness

B. cleverness

C. ability

D. politeness

5)."You've put a bug in his ear "means that you've _________ .

A. made him laugh

B. shown concern for him

C. made fun of him

D. given him some kind of warning

As more and more people lose their jobs, now is perhaps the time to consider the experienc
e of unemployment. What are the first feelings? Well, losing a job, or not being able to find one, almost always brings unwelcome changes. If you've lost a job, the first feeling is often one of shock. As well as the loss of income, many people find the whole routine of their life is shattered, their contact with other people reduced, their ambitions halted and their identity as a worker removed.

At first there may be good feelings too — a new and better job is just around the corner— it's nice to be able to lie in bed in the morning or spend more time with the children; have more time to think. But, unless a better job does turn up, the chances are the days start getting longer and time becomes harder to fill. Many people pass through periods of difficulty in sleeping and eating. They feel irritable and depressed, often isolated and lonely.

Despite all these problems though, unemployment can be a chance for a fresh start. You can discover that it provides an opportunity to sort out or rethink what you want from life and how best you can get it. You can use the time to plan how to find a new job, learn a new skill, develop your hobbies or see if you can run your own business.

What is the writer's main message in the passage?

A.Unemployment brings downward changes in people's lives.

B.One should try to make the best of unemployment.

C.Unemployment results in negative psychological effects.

D.Many people have no problems with unemployment.

My country's greatest symbol to the world is the Statue of Liberty(自由女神像), an
d it was designed by special care. I don't know if you've ever seen the Statue of Liberty, but if you look closely, she's holding not one object, but two. In one hand is the familiar torch we call the "light of liberty."And in the other hand is a book of law.

We're a nation of laws. Our courts are honest and they are independent. The President -- me -- I can't tell the courts how to rule, and neither can any other member of the government. Under our law, everyone stands equal. No one is above the law, and no one is beneath it.

All political power in America is limited and only given by the free vote of the people. We have a Constitution, now two centuries old, which limits and balances the power of the three branches of our government, the judicial(法庭的)branch, the legislative(立法的)branch, and the executive branch, of which I'm a part.

Many of the values that guide our life in America are first shaped in our families, just as they are in your country.American moms and dads love their children and work hard and sacrifice for them, because we believe life can always be better for the next generation. In our families, we find love and learn responsibility and character.

America is a nation guided by faith. Someone once called us "a nation with the soul of a church." This may interest you -- 95 percent of Americans say they believe in God, and I'm one of them.
